Laley23James Harden is looking like a bitch with the season in the line. This is pretty pathetic.

SportsAndLadyWhy does Chicago want Fred Hoidberg? Why is he so desirable in the NBA? Never really did anything with Iowa State

Yeah I've got no idea either. People think he is some great offensive genius. I just think he is a terrible coach and is lucky to be where he is at. I really love Thibs but he's like the Jim Harbaugh of the NBA. He won't ever last anywhere for long periods of time due to his style.SportsAndLady;1731292 wrote:Why does Chicago want Fred Hoidberg? Iowa State record previous 5 years before Fred Hoiberg: 16-14, 15-16, 14-18, 15-17, 15-17 for a combined record of 75 wins and 82 lossesSportsAndLady;1731292 wrote:Why does Chicago want Fred Hoidberg? Why is he so desirable in the NBA? Never really did anything with Iowa State
Iowa state 5 years with Fred Hoiberg: 16-16, 23-11, 23-12, 28-8, 25-8 for a combined record of 115 wins and 55 losses. takes out his rookie coaching season and his record of 99 wins and 39 losses is pretty impressive, especially at Iowa State. Also add 2 BIG 12 tournament titles to his resume. Not really sure why you'd think he is a terrible coach. -
Azubuike24Hoiberg was always considered a potential NBA coach after he quit playing, but somewhat surprisingly took the Iowa State job. I mean, I can't blame him. His Alma Mater, they are paying him well, he's got almost unlimited job security. Still, they are going to link him to the NBA forever...
Personally, the way his ISU teams play, I'm not so sure that style would translate to the NBA. Almost no defense and they aren't very great in the half court. Could just be the talent he has, who knows. -

So if I take grambling state from 0-27 last year to 5-22 next year, should I be in consideration to replace Duke?gport_tennis;1731309 wrote:Iowa State record previous 5 years before Fred Hoiberg: 16-14, 15-16, 14-18, 15-17, 15-17 for a combined record of 75 wins and 82 losses

This isn't about what hoidberg has done compares to previous Iowa state coaches. It's about him as an NBA coach, and I just don't see it.

If you take an awful team and make it slightly less awful (bus still really bad), not you should not be in contention to replace Coach K when he leaves. If you take a bad team, and turn it into a really good top 10 type of team (which he has done) over a sustained period of time, then I don't see why you shouldn't be in contention to replace Coach K at Duke.SportsAndLady;1731314 wrote:So if I take grambling state from 0-27 last year to 5-22 next year, should I be in consideration to replace Duke?

The comparison of Hoiberg to previous Iowa State coaches is meant to show that he is indeed a good coach and has been highly successful. He has gotten really good players to want to come and play in Iowa St (not exactly a hotbed of talent) and they play hard for him. Hell he even got a full season or 2 out of Royce Young (something nobody could do in the Pro's).
Combine that with his NBA player/Front office background and I could see why he would be a highly attractive NBA candidate. Do I fire thibs for hoiberg, probably not. But I could easily see him being the next Steve Kerr -
Azubuike24He hasn't gotten really good players. This is part of why many feel he will leave. He isn't getting elite recruits at ISU. He has built his teams on getting transfers and JUCO players. Chris Babb, Korie Luscious, Chris Allen, Deandre Kane, Bryce Dejean-Jones, Royce White, Melvin Ejim, Jameel McKay, etc...
Prior to this year, he's gotten 3 recruits that were 4-stars and only 2 (Monte Morris and Georges Niang) who were top 100 players... -

No surprise here. It's a close out game and they don't have a superstar to put the team on his back and carry them. Harden had his moment in the spotlight but now reality is here and reality says Harden isn't good enough.lhslep134;1731260 wrote:Harden was hot garbage tonight -
Azubuike24The Rockets are in a tough spot. They will always be a solid contender, top 4 team with the current group. You have to wonder what else they can do to improve though. They are pretty much maxed out where they are.

The best thing they can do is keep the core together, add back a healthy Patrick Beverley and go back at it again next year. Beverely is pretty close to a lockdown defender and he would have made a huge difference guarding curry. They are not too far off, no need to make huge personnel changesAzubuike24;1731334 wrote:The Rockets are in a tough spot. They will always be a solid contender, top 4 team with the current group. True, I was looking more at the overall picture of talent he has brought in (mostly transfers) compared to HS recruiting.Azubuike24;1731318 wrote:He hasn't gotten really good players. Plus being a former NBA player and a short time as an assistant in the NBA helps as well.
They were talking this AM that Chicago may do the complete dick move and wait until the other jobs are filled before they fired Thibs. I think it would be funny that if he gets another job this year, sign the first year $$$ of the deal to be very low so Chicago has to make up the rest of the 9 million he is owed. -

But is this model sustainable? Bringing in JUCO guys and transfers usually means extreme roster turnover every 1-2 years. He will continue to need to find cornerstone players (Niang and Morris are indeed that) to stabilize the teams. It's a difficult model to sustain. Heck, look at UK. They have even struggled on and off, even with top 5 talent every year, simply because of the turnover.gport_tennis;1731339 wrote:True, I was looking more at the overall picture of talent he has brought in (mostly transfers) compared to HS recruiting.
I always saw Hoiberg's run at ISU being more of a "I'm going to use it to promote my brand, pay back my Alma Mater/fans and have fun while doing it at the school I love." His future is in the NBA.
It's kind of like Brad Stevens in a way. There's no way the guy was going to maintain the level he set for himself at Butler (nor would it have been fair to expect him to). However, you're always going to be compared to yourself and what you have achieved. Given that Iowa State was a piss-on in the Big XII for a decade before Hoiberg wouldn't matter after he started progressing toward success.
Say a team like Miami or Chicago offered him full control right now. Could he turn it down? Even Donovan finally bolted after it started to show his model wasn't as sustainable as he thought at Florida. -

Does this style need to be sustained or can the success he has had at ISU make it a somewhat desireable spot for talented HS kids to end up?Azubuike24;1731343 wrote:But is this model sustainable? SportsAndLadyI mean at this point every college basketball program is having to turn over a new roster every year or two. That's how it goes these days.

They have two of the most overrated players in the league, Howard and Harden, so they will never actually win anything. Best case scenario for them is to have someone over pay for Harden or Howard and get some real talent in there.Azubuike24;1731334 wrote:The Rockets are in a tough spot. Azubuike24It doesn't have to be sustained for him to remain comfortable at ISU. He's got a lifetime job there. If it isn't sustainable though, and things level off at ISU, does his NBA stock continue to grow? Seems like the basketball coaching profession is one where more often than not, everyone ends up cashing in eventually when their stock is hot.
