Tribe Offseason Thread

Should be more than optimistic honestly. Tigers/White Sox/Indians is going to be a hell of a battle for the division this season

How do you guys feel about Carrasco? There was a point in time where I thought the Tribe was going to release him because of his antics, but he really settled in at the end of last season and is being tabbed as a potential top 25 pitcher for fantasy purposes this season. Let's hope so!

He dominated at the end of last year. He still has more bad than good in his track record but hopefully he found something and can build off it it. If he pitches like he did at the end of last year, our 1-2 with him and Kluber is awesome.

From August 10th on...he threw 69 innings and gave up 10 earned runs. 4 of the runs were in 1 game. 8 of his 10 starts he gave up either 0 or 1 run. The other two starts he gave up 2 runs and the aforementioned 4 run outing vs Detroit.

I think Carrasco has figured it out. The whole not pacing himself that the staff ingrained in him while in the pen did wonders. I dont expect him to do what he did second half. But I expect him to be damn good. Sub 3.25 ERA. Possibly better.

That would be excellent for my fantasy squad to pair with Kershaw : thumbup:

I have to admit that I thought CC was an incurable head case. It seems that the light bulb has turned on in his head, and I see no reason for him to regress.

Tribe prospects Carlos Moncreif and Francisco Lindor were hitting stars yesterday in the Tribe's 4-2 win over the Reds yesterday. Lindor who also turned in a defensive gem, singled twice and Moncrief went 4 for 4...both are expected to start the year in AAA Columbus. TJ House and Josh Tomlin each turn in good 2 inning performances according to Manager Terry Francona....although Tomlin was hammered early before settling down. House faced the minimum 6 batters and had 2 K's.

Trveor Bauer will start today for the Tribe in another game against the Reds

Watched 15 minutes of the replay of the game last night on FSN. Lonnie botched routine balls in the same inning. The 2nd one, he recovered and threw the guy out but the first one was with 2 outs and a guy on 3rd and allowed an unearned run in.

Not that these games matter or that 15 minutes is enough time to make a valid argument but it was discouraging to turn on the TV and watch them kick the ball around like 11 year olds.

On the flip side, the Tribes 5 run inning was started by a botched DP ball. Should've been 2 outs basses empty, instead was 2 on no outs.

But I agree, never like seeing errors. At least it's spring training when you're supposed to be "re-learning" the basics. As long as they short it up then last few weeks it will be fine.

They never figured it out last season. Defense was horrible.

This is true, which is why it is more concerning. On the bright side, Lindor made a GG type play when he got in the game.

Let's hope they do because I think the front office's mindset is "the defense can't be as bad this year" and that they will rely on light's out pictching and better defense to win the division.

Remember when the Indians were fun to watch back in the mid-1990's through the early 2000's?

They haven't been horrid over the past few years, but I get your point. John Hart was just so much smarter than the guys in charge now, imo. He could just never get that front line starting pitcher. His biggest blunder, to me, was taking a pass on the Jaret Wright for Pedro Martinez trade. I'm confident they win at least one championship with Pedro as their #1.

The Indians hit on a plethora of young guys on cheap deals. Thome, Belle, Ramirez, Lofton, Vizquel, and Alomar. Its an embarrassment of riches to have that young, and that cheap. I could actually make the argument that Hart was terrible at his job for not winning with that. How could he not land a better starter than Nagy/Burba/Whoever...it can go both ways.

The Indians now are severely hampered by the owner. I think if we had these guys in our front office, with Jacobs willing to spend back in the 90s, we wouldve been better off than with Hart.

Where Hart was good was in locking up that talent, long term, on cheap deals before they became real stars. I agree that they should've won a few titles. Always lacked the studs in the starting rotation.

True, but so did Shapiro. Just that it didnt pan out (Hafner, Sizemore, Peralta to an extent). Martinez was the only one of that group who panned out for us.

We have done it again, and it remains to be seen if it pans out (Kipnis, Santana, Gomes). Brantley seems to be borderline AS at worst. At least this time we have the pitching, just need THAT portion to pan out.

The model has always been the same, imo. Its just that the talent in the 90s was almost a homerun across the board. The last 2 waves have been filled with inconsistent guys, injuries, and busts with a few homeruns (Brantley, Victor) mixed in.

If the Braves didn't have Maddux, Glavine and David Justice.
If Mesa holds a 2-1 run lead in the 9th.
If Bip Roberts doesn't get sick.
If Tony Fernandez makes a routine play.

    This is a different conversation.

I'll agree with most of this except the statement that John Hart was smarter than Antonetti et al. Hart at least had money to work with, and a full stadium. You have to marvel at the teams that Antonetti has built on a shoestring budget, and this year's team is poised to contend also. Hart, with all the money in Texas, never was really successful there after he left Cleveland.

...and I remember when the Indians weren't so fun to watch in the 70's and 80's.

I think a lot of Tribe fans don't realize that those were very special years under very special circumstances. Those years are gone and will not be returning. The team can still be competitive, and win the Series, but the economic realities of a small-mid market team probably will keep the team from ever having a run like that again.

Hate to bitch about umpiring but you can add "and the umps giving Glavine & Maddux a foot outside of the strike zone when we went to Atlanta." :D

    Never forget.

^^^That game (like any other)could have been won at least at another half dozen other places.

One thing I remember is the failure to deliver the needed insurance run in the top of the 9th when runners were on 1st and third and only one out. Why do we give the hitters a break...and the runner( Alomar) for failing at a key moment, but crucify Mesa?

It's the old "Ernest Byner Syndrome." Everyone remembers that ONE polarizing moment but when you ask anyone about the rest of Byner's game, they don't remember the 67 yards rushing, 120 yards receiving & 2 TD's....only the fumble. Byner & Kosar kept them in that game. Mesa blowing that save is what everyone will remember.
  • HitsRus
Yep^^^....but such it is with closers...they are often the most successful players on the diamond....how many blown saves /versus saves did Mesa have that year?

A hitter can strike out with runners in scoring position 2 or 3 times in a game, but come thru once and be the hero.

...and of course who is going to have the kahonas to look Sandy Alomar Jr. in the eye and say, " Hey Sandy, What I want to know is why in the 9th inning of game 7 of the series you jogged home and didn't slide?"
