Cleveland Cavaliers Offseason 2014

Just take Parker or Wiggins. The last thing I think they should try and do is approach this with the end goal of luring Lebron back. It probably isn't happening. Move on, pick your new franchise guy, and go find a coach for him.

Little bit about Embiid's back injury from an article floating around on RCF. Didn't realize Drummond dealt with something similar, he was able to play in 81 games this year.

"However, Embiid is also dealing with a stress fracture in his lower back, according to both Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Eisenberg and medical sources, which is going to be much more concerning in both the short and long term. The injury is believed to be in the lumbar spine (the lower back).

What is unknown is the level (exactly where the injury occurred) and the location (where on the vertebrae the fracture is noted).

This is a very serious injury, especially for a big man.

While Kansas acknowledged the injury, an indication of the severity is that Embiid was sent to Los Angeles for a second opinion. Sources tell me that Embiid saw Dr. Robert Watkins, the same surgeon who worked on Peyton Manning and Rob Gronkowski. He advised Embiid to sit out for a short period.

The NBA has seen similar injuries. Most recently, Andre Drummond dealt with a lumbar stress fracture, which necessitated some missed time but has no real long-term consequences. While severity and location could change that, this is easily checked with both medical records and exams in the draft process.

"This is no different than dealing with any known injury," said one NBA athletic trainer, who is involved in his team's draft. "Something like (Nerlens) Noel is a value judgement after you get the facts, and this would be no different."

In fact, one medical source I spoke with said that if Embiid has a known stress fracture, it could be so far along that it is already healing. "It's going to calcify and even with someone pushing on him, it's not going to get unstable. He'll have a bit of pain to deal with, but it's more discomfort and management than an injury situation."

Bleacher Report's Dr. David Siebert told me that Embiid's issue is going to be one of management.
    ...
In the longer term, Embiid shouldn't worry for his NBA future.

While having this sort of back problem isn't a positive, it's not a chronic situation and doesn't portend future problems the way a chronic back or knee problem would. Both of these will heal up and could be checked easily in a pre-draft physical."

It doesn't have to be Lebron, but I think you need to bring in 2 all star level players around kyrie to compete.

    To me, the options are:

    1) use the #1 pick this year and make a run at an FA next summer... One of the best FA classes ever pending this season's early opt outs. Risky because any moves probably need to be made before you try to extend kyrie (both to convince him to sign and for cap/bird rights purposes)

    2) Keep the #1 pick, package any combo of non-Kyrie assets that teams are interested in, and bring in a guy who's at least a Deng-level borderline all star

    3) Trade the pick this year for an all star and make a run at someone else this summer before extending Kyrie

The only thing I think they definitely shouldn't do is simply add the pick to the current core and roll with it roughly unchanged.

Cavs also need to hire a coach well before the draft IMO.

Coworker just threw out an interesting scenario, although, I doubt it would happen.

Cavs trade #1 overall for Philly's 2 firsts, #3 and #10. Cavs trade #10 overall in a deal for Kevin Love. At #3, take the last man standing of Wiggins, Parker, and Embiid.

Minnesota isn't trading love for the 10th pick + cavs players.

The only way they shouldn't is if someone offers better than the 10th pick....because...HE GAWN in a year for NOTHING

Cavs reportedly have targeted Embid as the top player in the draft

    Smokescreen at this point IMO.

We're talking about a FO that gave no indication whatsoever to the media about Dion, TT, or Bennett, and we should believe a report coming out hours after winning the lottery? No way.

Don't we have a different fo now though?
  • SportsAndLady
Embiid IS the top target of the draft, they're not telling us anything we don't already know..question is are they comfortable enough with his health to take him. If not, it's a question of wiggins or Parker.

    Plain and simple
  • Automatik
I wouldn't want Embiid at #1. Go Wiggins or Parker. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

An inexperienced big man with back issues already....no thanks.

Right. And the report implies that we are, even though we haven't even gotten Embiid's medical reports yet.

Different GM, some of the same staff, and the same "play it close to the chest" owner.

My point is I don't see us completely deviating from our media strategy from the last few years.

See my previous post about playing through a stress fracture in your lower lumbar. Drummond has done it with success and it doesn't sound as serious as if it were in his legs. Agree however that's his red flag.

I think the fact he's inexperienced but has such an advanced offensive game is part of what makes him appealing. He's only going to expand his game and keep getting better. Names like Thabeet or Oden scare people off from taking a center but if his back checks out he is IMO a better prospect than those guys or even Jonas V and Drummond were in recent drafts.

Are Embiid's people willing to release his medical information to the Cavs? I read where they want to screen him to only certain teams to limit his draft-ability to teams he doesn't want to play for.

Read that too. They may not

The amount of QQing from the media because the cavs won the lottery is bringing the lulz. QQ some fucking more.
  • Pick6
My initial wishlist. Not sure of how plausible it is, but id like to trade the #1 to the Sixers for #3 and Noel. Let them have Wiggins or Embiid, we will have Parker and Noel.

Cavs GM (i don't even know waht the fucking guy's name is) saying calls are "rolling in" about the top pick.

I'd be cool with moving down but no worse than to pick 4. You can still get one of the big 4, and can probably add another starter or depth guy.

I don't want them trading for Love that's for sure. I would be pretty pissed if they traded for a guy with one year on the contract only with the hopes of Lebron coming to cleveland. Yeah, fuck that. That's not how you run an organization.
  • Lovejoy1984
I'm thinking that if they pull the trigger on Love, they'd get assurances that he would pick up his player option for an extra year.

But I agree, I'd be hesitant to pull that trade unless, you knew for sure you'd get LeBron.

Which they have no idea, and LeBron is definitely not coming. So, as I said earlier.. Fuck that trade.
