This. I'm glad he has to wait till next year. Brandon Weeden trying to run a Chip Kelly offense virtually assures the Browns of the first pick next year.Sonofanump;1355874 wrote:Browns pick #6, not #1. -

This. Kelly is going to pull a Pete Carroll and bolt for the NFL before his former employer gets smashed by the NCAA. Everything I've read about the investigation sounds like Oregon could get hit hard with sanctions.se-alum;1355680 wrote:I'm pretty sure Oregon has been called to the carpet by the NCAA. He will have to testify in front of the COI, like Tressel did.
If we're going to hire a college coach I'd, personally, rather have O'Brien. What he did at Penn State was incredible. I know the pro game is far different, but he's familiar with it, at least, whereas ol' Chip knows nothing about the NFL. Kelly will probably need to change the offensive personnel dramatically, which probably means OL along with QB. No way can Weeden run Kelly's offense, at least as it is currently constructed at the collegiate level, and the offensive line will have to be athletic and durable. Maybe Thomas & Co. and do it, but maybe not, and I'd hate to see one of the better o-lines in the NFL torn apart.
O'Brien ran some of the spread at Penn St. with McGloin, who is actually quite comparable to Weeden, but also had a solid rushing attack with a bunch of nobodies in the backfield.
I'd like to have Arians in Cleveland, or Jim Caldwell, but O'Brien would be my pick over Kelly. -
Benny The JetIf you guys think that if Kelly were to come to Cleveland and attempt to run what you see at Oregon, you're insane. I personally don't think he'll take the job because the fact we have a power back and a statue QB. IF he were to take it, it wouldn't look a thing like you see at Oregon.
The best opening for Kelly to go to would be the Eagles. Mobile quarterback, nice run game, and he could find unique ways to use a healthy Desean Jackson -

I've heard about this, but I've also heard that there's probably a ton of loop-holes. For one, I think I heard that O'Brien took the job under the impression it was a criminal matter, and not an NCAA matter.Sonofanump;1356125 wrote:$18.4 million is a little steep.

Either way, didn't say it'd happen, just that I'd prefer O'Brien over Kelly. (I know, not at 18.4 mil) -

Agree, I dismissed O'Brien as a candidate when I saw the buyout. If it can be reduced or eliminated, all the better.OhioStatePride2003;1356144 wrote:I've heard about this, but I've also heard that there's probably a ton of loop-holes. stlouiedipalmaI think Haslam knows he needs to make a big splash and hire the biggest name he can find. I don't think money will get in the way of it, either. I really believe he wants Saban but, knowing he won't leave, will offer the sun, moon and stars to Kelly.

I would rather offer the sun, moon, and stars to David Shaw. There has to be a price that would get him away from Stanford.stlouiedipalma;1356283 wrote:I think Haslam knows he needs to make a big splash and hire the biggest name he can find. stlouiedipalmaYeah, he's a good one. First Harbaugh leaves and he keeps them on track. Then Luck graduates and he has them winning the Rose Bowl. If they could have blown Wisky out (like a five-loss team should have been) he would be interviewing today.
-
se-alumStanford not blowing out Wisky has nothing to do with it really. He's a Stanford man, and it seems like that's where he wants to be for the near future. I think the San Diego job is the only one that could pull him away from Stanford.
-
stlouiedipalmaThe only thing I've learned about high-salary coaches is that everyone has their price. Loyalty is just a word between "leech" and "lust".

I dont see Weeden being the QB if Kelly comes here.se-alum;1356015 wrote:This. I'm glad he has to wait till next year. Brandon Weeden trying to run a Chip Kelly offense virtually assures the Browns of the first pick next year.
Vick will not be in Phili next year. I do agree that he would probably choose Phili over Cleveland if the offers are equal, however.Benny The Jet;1356118 wrote:If you guys think that if Kelly were to come to Cleveland and attempt to run what you see at Oregon, you're insane. Why? Why in the hell would he need to make a "Splash"? He better be more worried about winning than splashing.stlouiedipalma;1356283 wrote:I think Haslam knows he needs to make a big splash and hire the biggest name he can find. -

Crimson streakActually weedon wouldn't be a bad fit for Kelly's offense. He would be in the shotgun most the time and would use a vertical passing attack. Obviously Kelly isn't going to run his college offense in the nfl because a qb can't take that kind of beating in the nfl. I think you would see the same philosophy of Kelly's offense just slowed down and no qb runs.

It autocorrected it to weedon I dk why? My phone sucks -
mucalum49Every one is so worried about his offensive system. The guy knows it'd be adjusted in the NFL. But the speed would probably be one thing that'd be a constant. He'd continue to have a one word play call which is what New England took from him. That is what allows his teams as well as the Pats now to get off so many plays.
"Any coach is going to learn from other people and see how they can implement it in their system. Anything you do has to be personnel driven. You have to adapt to the personnel you have. There's a lot of great offenses out there, but does it fit with the personnel you have. The key is making sure what you're doing is giving your people a chance to be successful."

In the Globe article it talks about the one word play calling... http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2012/10/08/patriots-huddle-relies-power-one/nHTapuVnBOwfFlffwTrN6J/story.html
Kelly’s practices are the stuff of legend. There is no need for wind sprints because no one stands around. At all. Not the players, not the coaches. Music is blaring. The defense sometimes plays with 25 players so the offense can get more precise.
It’s dizzying by design. The games are actually tranquil.
“I remember the first day he came as offensive coordinator, we started one of his drills,” Dickson said. “And he said, ‘I’m going to show you how fast I want to go. Your two-minute that you’re running here is going to be nothing compared to what I teach you.’ It was insane. I thought he was insane. I was like, ‘Nobody moves that fast.’ The only way you’re going to simulate that speed, you have to practice that way.”
If you want to see what’s next on the pro level, look to the colleges. That’s what Belichick does, with his alliances with coaches such as Nick Saban (LSU and Alabama), Urban Meyer (Florida and Ohio State) and, now, Kelly.
That’s why when Kelly walked into Gillette Stadium two years ago — and he’s been there three times total — ears perked up among the Patriots’ coaches, including Belichick.
Kelly had become friendly with former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien while both were rising in the college ranks. The UNH coaching staff would visit Brown, where O’Brien was coaching, for pickup basketball games and to talk X’s and O’s.
Kelly told the Patriots he was moving to a no-huddle that only used one word to signify everything involved in a play.
Sideline calls take too long. Wristbands too.
One word is all that is needed.
“The things they’re doing now, they’re even faster,” Dickson said. “They have things where they can call one thing and it’s going to tell them formation, plays, everything, and all you have to see is coverage.”
The collective Patriots’ response to Kelly’s assertion was, basically, “You run an entire offense like that? How do you get the players to comprehend that?”
Kelly declined to be interviewed, but those with knowledge of the discussion said Kelly laid out his rationale.
Players memorize thousands of words in songs, hundreds of movie lines, and many other things involving pop culture.
Why can’t players have instant recall of a handful of concepts? Heck, everybody knows No. 2 on a McDonald’s menu gets you a Quarter Pounder, medium fries, and a drink.
“It’s kind of easy,” Dickson said. “It comes with repetition. A lot of guys learn different. Myself, I just needed to be out there repping those plays. The more comfortable you get, the faster you’ll go. He wants to make it easier to where you’re not thinking about anything, you’re just going fast. Make it as simple as guys can learn it so you can go really fast. That’s the key, making it simple for your players so they can play at top speed.”
Kelly’s overall message to the Patriots: Don’t put a limit on your players’ minds; they will learn whatever you teach them.
“I was interested to hear how he did it,” Belichick said. “I would say he expanded it to a different level and it was very interesting to understand what he was doing. Certainly I’ve learned a lot from talking to Chip about his experiences with it and how he does it and his procedure and all that.” -
zach24ozIf Chip Kelly is somehow hired by Cle then I would say that Weeden would be the guy out of what they currently have. Colt doesnt have much of an arm, gets injured quite often as the first game he played in this season he got hurt...so he definitely wouldnt be the guy to be running the spread option. But I honestly dont believe that Kelly will be having his QB run nearly as much like he did at Oregon...I think he could bring a nice passing attack. Weeden will be able to throw down field(+15yds) more than he did this year besides those dumb crossing routes they ran every game and he would use Gordon, Little, and Benjamin to their strengths and they would probably add another WR either draft or FA. He can use Mo Hard and T Rich in a 2back set and just be able to be creative. Defensively if they switch to a 3-4 that could hurt since they've spent the last 2 seasons turning into a 4-3. Phil and Rubin would be alright but how are the LBs gonna look, with Sheard? Idk...its hard to say but it looks like their D right now is getting closer to being top 12...just add another CB,S,LB and DE and there will be a good rotation.

This is the first I've heard of Whisenhunt being looked at. What's everyone's thoughts on him? Out of all of the candidates, he'd be my pick. His defenses were always pretty nasty, just needs a semi-competent QB and he succeeded. -

Not sold on Weedon. I think they should investigate nabbing Curt Couzins.
In the draft, I would focus in on getting another shutdown corner. Joe Hadin could use a bookend....aka Hanferd and Minnofield. -
