Tribe Spring Training 2012

In other news Pomeranz is projected to be the #3 starter for the Rockies. That's about as good as what Ubaldo will probably be this year at best. What a great trade.

Tribe acquired reliever Jairo Asencio from the Braves for cash...

After looking him up, he apparently did well enough in spring training to be in contention for Atlanta's final bullpen spot. After "boasting" a 6.23 ERA and 2.00 WHIP last year in 13 innings. He's 27, which means he's young enough to improve, but too old to be a true prospect who has any real worth on the market.

In other words, a typical acquisition of a small-market team that would rather be buried under tons of rubble from an earthquake rather than open the purse strings.

HOLY SHIT! Get a load of this.

Asencio was on the Braves’ restricted list all of 2010 after it was discovered he had come to the U.S. as Luis Valdez and claimed to be three years younger. The Indians are already dealing with a similar case as the pitcher formerly known as Fausto Carmona was actually Roberto Hernandez and three years older.

    LOL. Of course.
  • Crimson streak
Could him and fausto be brothers ;)

The front ofice "plan" revealed......if we set out enough bottles, we are bound to catch lightning in one of them.

    Right handed power stick? ...please.

Greg Brinda always jokes about the Indians shopping at Big Lots for their talent, but this move seems more like something you'd get from the "free" section on Craigslist.

  • HitsRus
^^^^more like shopping at rummage sale.

Sounds like it's hit a snag right now but still a 50/50 chance of happening. I wouldn't be upset with this, especially if the Angels pay most of his contract. Bobby Abreu without much in the tank > our current LF options. Plus it moves Duncan back to his best role, RH stick off the bench.
  • hoops23
That would probably be the best offseason move of the year by the Tribe, as sad as that is.
  • HitsRus
Yeah...sad as it is. Another LH hitter...and one without much left in the tank. I suppose he can play the field which in their opinion makes him more valuable than Vlad. But you are also going to have to give up something to get him, whereas Vlad could be had for some chump change. But as others have noted....it won't matter in a few months when Hafner goes down with an injury.

Bobby Abreu will give this team some leadership and a professional hitter in the lineup. He may not produce huge numbers anymore but his approach to hitting and plate discipline is awesome and will help the youngsters on this team out. He takes pitches and walks. Makes pitchers work. Elevates pitch counts. Will steal a bag when you arn't looking. He is a pesky out and pitchers don't like facing him.

With him and Kotchman, this teams OBP is going to rise drastically and strikeouts will be down. I hope it happens.

Talks about Abreu have reportedly broken off.

BA hit .254 and had 8 HRs in 142 games with the Angels last year. Not exactly a guy you give up alot for.

Saw where Matt Underwood posted where he thought they might just release Abreu and the Tribe could grab him for nothing at league minimum...

I saw some MLB writers wondering why they just don't sign Johnny Damon, and gave the point that Damon had better numbers than Abreu last year.

Sure will be interesting how this pans out. We have some potential to make some noise. Fast start or slow start will be a big factor, IMO.
  • HitsRus
Fast start is imperative or ownership will bail on the season. Even with a fast start like last year, they were slow to address team weaknesses and watched the lead vanish into thin air. The Tigers could lead the division wire to wire.

I am disappointed in this front office. They know exactly what this team needs and just won't commit even a small amount of dollars to obtain it.

Dan Wheeler celebrated making the roster by trashing a lead...giving up 5 runs in the 8th. Ryan Ludwick (RH hitting OF) contributed a 2 run double. Ludwick was signed by the Reds as a free agent in the off season a 1 year $2.5 miilion contract with an option.

I wish they would bail and sell the damn team

6 up and 21 down. Tribe plays first string and gets clocked again. Masterson's ERA balloons further.
  • royal_k
Pomeranz goes 6 shut out innings and improves to 3-0 this spring with a 0.53 ERA. Nice trade........
