Tribe Spring Training 2012

  • grodt
Looks like Garland isn't happening. His rehab wasn't far enough along to allow him to compete in spring training.

Other notes (that may have been mentioned already):
    • Masterson or Ubaldo will be the Opening Day starter. Acta says he knows who it is but he wants to see how they throw in the first few weeks. My guess is Masterson.
    • Chiz and Hannahan will compete all spring for the 3B job. My guess is Chiz opens the season in AAA unless he looks like Barry Bonds.
    • LaPorta is competing for backup LF/DH/1B job
    • Jason Donald is a leading candidate for the utility role.

Haren might even be the #3 this year behind Weaver/CJ Wilson. Angels and Rays just have stacked rotations.

CC/Pineda could also be right up there.

I was about to list King Felix/Pineda Colado. Then I remembered he was traded Dont know why I didnt think to put CC and Pineda though. Good call.

I have a few doubts Pineda will be able to handle the NY pressure. His age and aggressiveness could be a huge plus, or a huge deterrent lol.

I wonder if we will score over a 150 runs total this year....could be close.

I don't think I can take another year of Hafner DHing. I think this team lead the American League in striking out and they don't even have any power. It would be different if it were Thome, Ramirez, Justice, and Eddie Murray in their primes but the current guys are a bunch of .240 hitting turds. The pitching was pretty good last season but you have to score some runs consistantly to contend. If Detroit stays healthy they will bury the rest of the Central by mid season. Best hitting and pitching in the division as much as it pains me to admit it. Detroit could win it all this season. Cleveland when the dust clears will be around a .500 ball club. (no sticks)

The Indians may have a better hitting team than we give them credit for now. The only thing is that it is predicated on a lot of ifs....If Hafner and Sizemore regain their form...if the young players continue to improve...if Asdrubal can hit like he did last year. If Choo returns to form and can stay healthy.
The Tribe did not address their need for a right handed power hitter, a self stated and obvious need after watching the Tigers play match-up with their bullpen on our left handed hitters in the head to head competition near the end of the season. That can be nothing else than a failure of ownership to approve the few $millions more it would have taken to acquire a professsional RH stick. That is what drives Tribe fans mad...we want a reason to get excited about the team....and (note to Bobby D)....we really don't care about made in China bobbleheads and other worthless promotions.

The pitcher formerly known as Fausto....
He may be out of sight, but he is not out of mind with his teepee loge brothers. "Rob" as teammate Justin Masterson joked is well liked by his teammates, who are wishing him a speedy return. Good story.

"Pronk" normally makes it a month or 2 into the season, looks like he might be putting something together, then breaks down.

Grady's already in midseason form. I wish more Indians players came out of the gates ready to go like that.

Worst part is that now he is going to have no spring training, so it will likely be into May before he is healthy enough to really start to contribute (if that is even realistic).

Somewhere though the Dolan clan was high fiving each other that he is hurt because it means there is no way he will meet the performance incentives that could have taken his contract from 5 to 9 million.

It might be time for Antonetti to go dumpster diving again as I am not sure at this point that they are getting anything from Grady this season.

Garland blowing off his physical, bringing Cristian Guzman out of retirement, now this......not a good way to start the season off.

Really they've been sort of preparing for this all offseason (Cunningham, Pie, Spillborghs, Canzler) not to mention LaPorta and Brantley already on the team. It really sucks but hopefully they have accumulated the depth to get through this.

Also he was behind Cabrera not Ordonez:huh: And come on Prince Fielder is a definite upgrade from VMart, you're just by 2011 #'s getting 26 more HR's and 17 more RBI's. And with Jackson-Boesch-Cabrera ahead of him expect even more RBI chances this season. Obviously they have to play the games but this is a Detroit team who won the AL Central by 15 games last year and has went out and improved
Big tribe fan here and yet I agree with your assessment. Fister was like 2-13 when he was traded, but the man was a frieking stud....

Instead, we pick up Ubaldo for our 2 top pitching prospects. Once again, Indian management gets hoodwinked.

It amazes me the variance in payroll between the 2 teams....each city of which has economic problems.

Tell you what, we'll trade you our owner for your owner, and we will throw in the Columbus Clippers as a buffer.

Hey, Footwedge, I just noticed that you and I have almost the same number of posts.....................and Vcash, too!

On 92.3 this afternoon they mentioned had they not wasted money on Grady, Derek Lowe, Kotchman and the Artist Formerly Known as Fausto this offseason they could have allocated it toward signing Fielder. Which would you guys rather have?

Maybe we could have paid him this year lol but we weren't throwing the amount of money the Tigers did at him.

This. Plus, Lowe+Grady+Fausto+Kotchman=$20 million. Prince is making $23 million this year and will make $214 million over the next 9 years. You can't just say we get rid of those guys and we could have had Prince. Plus we would have had more holes in the starting rotation then we do now.

Haha no :D Really though Dave Dombrowski is a great GM, built the 97 Marlins and this current rise with the Detroit Tigers is all him. Also Mr Illitch wants to win a World Series for the city of Detroit sooo bad that he will do anything it takes which is why he's sunken this much money into the club
