We all know how other guys of the Bellicheck coaching tree has turned out (McDaniels, and esp Crennel and Mangini). Saban was also a loser in his stint with Miami. Just something to think about

To me, it would depend on other candidates. If they are looking at someone like Jay Gruden as well as Saban, Im taking Saban any day.
Fuck that. I want absolutely no part of Jay Gruden. I'd take Saban 100 times over him. Saban was far form a complete failure. He had a winning season (9-7) and the following season he had culpepper and joey harrington as his QBs. He would inherit a much better roster.

I would take Saban. His "bad stint" with a real bad Miami team still produced many more wins than Shurmur will have here in Cleveland and now some fans are wetting themselves at the thought of keeping him.

I think that college coaches are adapting much quicker now to the league, and there is not the stigma there was a few years ago.

More than anything I think he would be unbelievably motivated to make it work because this is the only level he hasn't truly proven himself. For a driven guy like him I think that means alot, and wherever he does go he is going to be all in. I think he probably learned alot from his stint with Miami about what not to do and what doesn't work, and will be that much better for it the second time around.

It makes me a little nervous, but I don't see any real top flight assistants out there that seem like can't miss guys.

If nothing else, this late season run of wins has made the Browns job much more attractive to prospective coaches than it was 2 months ago, because suddenly we look close to winning vs. a complete tear down which would scare guys off.

Saddest part is that had we not fired him as President, Holmgren would be the perfect coach for our situation. Runs the system with a roster ready to win. He left alot to be desired as a President, but he is a great coach as far as X's/O's go and that is what we need right now to take that next step.

Gruden would be perfect, but Joe Banner precludes that because a big name coach likely won't want to answer to him. Andy Reid would have been perfect as well, but that similarly is out because of Banner.

With another good draft and some smart free agent signings this team could really be a factor next year as Pitt/Baltimore are on the decline. It is just vital they not screw up the coaching hire if they go that route.

On Sunday the only #Browns starters 30 years or older were Sheldon Brown (33) and Benjamin Watson (31).

Interesting, I would have thoughter easier, but they just did play two cupcakes in Oak & KC so that would make it appear so.

It's beyond me how a returning playoff team like the bengals got the easier schedule.
  • Mulva
Does strength of schedule include the results of games the team played in?

Does anyone think someone like Saban would return to the NFL unless he had a big chunk of control regarding personnel?

As for Shurmur, I'm not one of his fans at all. I want someone who can fire these guys up, who isn't afraid to take chances and wants his team to be mentally and physically tough.

Living where I do I have the opportunity to see just that kind of coach daily. Believe it or not, it's Jeff Fisher of the Rams. A year ago these guys were pussycats. Now they know they belong on the field, they hit hard every play and they believe they have a chance to win in the fourth quarter. They're not quite playoff-ready, but you can see it's just a matter of time.

That's what we need in Cleveland, the kind of coach who can make the players believe in themselves and direct them to do great things. As much as I want the Rams to do well it would break my heart to see them (or any rebuilding team) get there before my Browns. Hopefully Haslam wants the same things and isn't afraid to go out and get the right guy.

Think that's bad. Look at the patriots.

A team's place of finish only determines two of the games for the next season. If we use the Browns as an example, they were locked into playing 6 division games, 4 games against the AFC West, and 4 games against the NFC East. The only two games determined by last season's standings were the other 4th place teams in the AFC (Buffalo and Indy)

Not hard to believe at all, I'd take him coaching my team in a second.

That has been my point all along.

Give someone like that the talent the Browns have now, and the ceiling for what I think the team could achieve is much higher than with Shumur.

We see it with Fox in Denver, Fisher in St. Louis.

Sometimes these veteran coaches who have achieved alot just need a change of scenery to get the juices flowing again.

If it wasn't for Joe Banner, Andy Reid would have been the perfect coaching target for our situation. Veteran coach who needs a change of scenery but runs the system we have better than the guy we have.

I can agree with this. It seems after awhile players get jaded with the same coach, with the exception of a few coaches. Even if we didn't hire Banner, I didn't see the Browns hiring him tbh. Andy has had a rough year personally. I think he will take a year off.

Some solid reads. After this season, I say keep Heckert. Most of the guys in this draft class (including gordon) had significant playing time. It's pretty impressive.

Seems to be the consensus. Keep Heckert and tell Lombardi to GFH
  • royal_k
Heckert's track record speaks for itself. He drafted well in Philly and he's done the same for the Browns. It would be a mistake to not bring him back.

Here is a coordinator I would be interested in: Kyle Shannahan.

yea heckert hit the jack pot with weeden and richardson. today both were out played by a fourth round pick and a sixth round pick

More of Patty Derpmur's fault Knight Ryder. Come on dude, you can't seriously blame Heckert for 11 carries or whatever the fuck Richardson got.
  • Mulva
Today was the 7th time this season that Richardson has averaged under 3 yards per carry.

Knight Ryder's football intelligence rivals Failouta's intelligence. Don't mind him.

Our run blocking blows. Trich is a beast and has like 4 games this year with a good ypc.
  • Commander of Awesome
Part of that falls on patty fuckhead. He just doesn't call good run plays. Stright up the gut into an 9 man box all the fucking time. No way to get Trich some space, or ease the pressure in the box.
  • Rotinaj
Yea shurmur is definitely the main problem the team has. All I want for Christmas is a good fucking head coach!!!
