2012 Cleveland Browns thread: AKA Pat Shurmur Memorial thread

  • IggyPride00
Tim Hasselback was just on Sportscenter for a segment talking about the 3 star rookie QB's (Luck, RGIII, Wilson) and what makes them so successful right away.

First comment out of his mouth was that they were each in situations where coaches suited the offense to their individual skills.

Next comment was, that all too often rookie QB's struggle/fail because they end up in a situation with a coach who is married to running their system even if it is not a good fit for the QB's skill set.

That does just about sum up the Shumur experience.

RGIII should thank his lucky stars we didn't end up trading up to get him, because I can't believe he would look anything like the star he does right now if he were playing here.

Mike Shanahan has a resume that would totally give him the right to be as arrogant about his system as he wanted, and yet he has overhauled alot of what he does because of what he has to work with at QB.

While I didn't like Colt much, Shumur did nothing to put him in position to be successful. I remember beating my head in the wall about his refusal to put Colt in the gun (where like Weeden he was much more comfortable).

If a 2 time Super Bowl head coach can see the wisdom of adapting your system to the talent, rather than shoving square pegs in round holes, why didn't Shurmur?

Quite frankly at this point my number 1 criteria for the next coach is that they have to be innovative and flexible. Be capable of sticking with our 4-3 scheme on defense (which we have the personnel for right now) even if you have been a lifelong 3-4 guy. On offense be willing to open it up now that we have some weapons and a QB with the arm to get them the ball.

I completely agree that RG3 would have struggled here. You have to adapt to running qbs and Pat can't adapt to anything

Happy birthday to the best left tackle in the league. For his bday I put in a pro bowl vote for him, and let's also look at this link followed by fail quotes (from the browns/ravens week 4 matchup), and lol at them.

    Now the fails:

I am pretty sure footwedge at one point QQ'd about getting rid of JT too. I can't find that post, but I think his history of fails speaks for himself.

I believe Wes also mentioned something about being displeased with Joe GOAThomas. He should be included in the lulz.
  • royal_k
Anyone questioning Thomas needs their head examined. And now we have a guy on the other side that's pretty damn good as well.

Wonder if there is any correlation in Weeden throwing down the field more because he has an actual deep threat in Gordon, who McCoy never had.
I vote arm strength as the reason.

Tony Grossi seemed to think it was just about a done deal on the radio this evening.
  • Commander of Awesome
lol grossi lol. Fuck I hope not, but once I heard "Grossi" and "radio" I calmed considerably.
  • SportsAndLady
Grossi is a joke...but so is Cleveland media, so it's to be assumed.

They always try to "break" these stories...when in reality (my guess here) nobody knows what the hell is going to happen.

Damn Thomas calling Hillis out. Saying his contract was more important then him playing. And also said he was toxic to the team.
  • Pick6
Certainly not defending Hillis, but its easy for Thomas and his 10.5mil/year salary to say

And Thomas has earned every penny of that contract. Hasn't missed a snap.
  • Commander of Awesome
Thomas said: "I don't know, you guys tell me. I don't know if strep throat and whatever other injuries he had should keep you out of an NFL game or several. All I know is Alex Mack's appendix blew up and he played. A lot of guys tried to help him and give him guidance, and he wasn't listening."

    Pwned.

This. Thomas pwns. In the Raiders game, I legit saw him block two guys. Greco got beat, and thomas threw his guy into the Raiders DT, stopping his pass rush. People that don't think he's on Pace/Walter Jones level don't know what theyre talking about. Best Tackle I've ever seen.

That's because you must have never seen the likes of Pace, Walter Jones, Anthony Munoz, Jonathan Ogden, Willie Roaf, etc.

I think you need to watch more football

Oh you've never seen Joe Thomas play? Thanks for pointing that out to everyone.
  • IBleedRed
I can tell you have never seen the greatest tackles of all time play which is why you think that Joe Thomas is the best.

Never said all time, nice fail. Just the best I've seen play. I wasn't around for Lou Groza, who I bet would be up there as well.

Swing and a miss slugger, but keep your chin up... but thanks for pointing out that you only started watching football in the last 5 years since a lot of the guys I listed were playing in the last decade or so. It's not your fault though, I'm sure mommy made you do your homework on Sundays and tucked you in before MNF.

Aww thats cute, a new member coming in to troll. Who was the poster who invited you to troll? Whoever it was, you and your mentor are trying too hard.
  • Commander of Awesome
Actually I've seen them all play, any other fails? Munoz was late in his career when I saw him though so perhaps I can't comment fully on him. So you like Pace and Walter Jones? Congrats ya old fuck, you going to tell me how back in the day they hit harder too? Good luck finding your teeth on your night stand while your grand kid is stealing your medicare pills.

Yeah...I have always said he was good, just not as good as some think
