Random MLB chatter

Probably too early to be overly concerned about Utley. If he plays a couple games and then has to sit out due to the knee flaring up that would be a different story. Did he have any off season surgery on it?

If he is ready for the big leagues, then bring him up. You'd only be "rushing" him if he isn't ready. Like others have said, he has already been great in his limited time in the minors. I see him getting to AA or AAA by September, and if he does well there, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him as a September call up.

I can understand the "nuances" argument if he is a pitcher, but he is a freaking outfielder. It won't take him that long to adjust to the position and we've already established that he can hit. If he keeps hitting in the minors, there are zero nuances left for him to conquer

I'd say there will be a rather large difference between pitching in the Major League and instructional ball. Harper is expected to start the year in low A ball and is only in Nationals camp for a few weeks before moving down to minor league camp.
  • jordo212000
Sure there will be a difference in pitching, but I said IF he continues to show he can hit, then there is no reason to arbitrarily hold him in the minors. Especially after their season ends
  • karen lotz
Right, but not too many guys go from low A ball to MLB in one year. He is a freak but he is still only 18 years old (I think). Where is he listed on the top prospects list by any of the experts?
  • karen lotz
I'm not saying its impossible, just don't think its likely especially considering how the Nationals are trying to build their franchise.

    Chipper calls out jordo:
If they think I’m doing this for the money, they obviously haven’t seen my bank account,” he said. “I’ve never played this game for money. Nor will I. My mind doesn’t work that way. I play this game because I love my teammates and they wanted me to come back. “I still feel like I have something to offer, and the cynical fan can really kiss my ass. I really don’t care. There’s a bunch of true fans and the people who actually want to take the time to get to know me know who I am. The guy who sits in his mom’s basement and types on his mom’s computer, I couldn’t really care less about.

I'm not sure why he feels the need to call me out. I mean, all I did was express surprise when a 38 year old player who is coming off of an ACL injury and a season where he struggled to hit for long periods of time, said that he was coming back for another season. Keep in mind Chipper had openly discussed retirement during last season.

Apparently I'm not the only dude saying that either. As evidenced by him calling out basement dwelling baseball fans. I have to admit that I find it funny that I am a basement dweller though haha. I mean, karen you have over 10,000 posts. That's double what I have and we started here at the same time.

Chipper may very well have a good season, I don't know. I've never had a problem with him. Like I said, I was just surprised to hear that he was going to rehab and return for another season

No he did not. It just patella tendinitis well atleast that is what they are reporting. He had a MRI on Saturday.

I wonder when Harper gets up to the league if they will move Werth to left?

Not sure, I had heard whispers that they wondered if he could play CF.
  • karen lotz
Harper's first 2 AB's against big league pitching resulted in K's. He came in as a pinch hitter for the DH.

I'd think if healthy Werth would play CF. Of course the Nats have Nyjer Morgan there now so a lot would depend on his ability to keep his shit together.

Beyond a publicity stunt? Near zero. RT @wwalker4: @keithlaw odds that Bryce Harper is called up to the big leagues by seasons end
Take it for what its worth.

Really just depends on how he responds to big league pitching. I guess there is a good chance that they send him home after the minor league season ends, but the Natinals need to pay for Werth's contract (they are said to be considering throwing a Godfather offer at Pujols as well). I could very easily see them bring up Harper in September. He'll sell some tickets

^^^Im staying away from anything STL this year. They really do seem to be a tough-luck organization in 2011.
  • jordo212000
Looks like Carpenter will be okay. I'll never forget how much he whined after the Reds-Cardinals melee. Brandon Phillips described the Cardinals perfectly imo
  • darbypitcher22
I'd love to see Montero up with the big club this year in the Bronx...

Harper got his first hit of the spring today. Went 1 for 2

Thanks, my other league is pretty deep, but no sense drafting a player that won't see full time action next year due to our salaray cap restictions.
