"Despite #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s struggles on the track, Hendrick Motorsports has begun negotiating a contract extension for NASCAR's most popular driver. Team owner Rick Hendrick told ESPN.com of his plans Thursday after Earnhardt was named the sport's most popular driver for the eighth straight year during the National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers luncheon at the Bellagio. "We're looking at extending it," Hendrick said of Earnhardt, who just completed the third year of a five-year deal that ends in 2012. "I really like him. I think the world of him. I know he can do it. We just have to get the right combination in, and I think we're going to have it. I hope we get to race together until he retires ... until I retire. I'll retire first," he said. Extending the contract would end any speculation that Earnhardt might move his Nationwide Series program to Sprint Cup after 2012 and drive for himself or go to another team. But Earnhardt's first priority is making sure the next time he returns to Las Vegas for the season-ending banquet it is as a member of the Chase field and not just to get a popularity award. "The only person that can truly help me get where I need to go starts with me, then it goes to Rick, Steve [Letarte] and those guys in your inner circle every week and in your corner every week," said Earnhardt, who finished 21st in points. "My biggest problem, I think, is my confidence," he said."

As expected following the 'borrowing' of Kasey Kahne, Scott Speed has been released from Red Bull Racing.
  • GoJPM!
^Scott Speed is free, he is free, he is free at last!

On the flipside, he no longer has Red Bull placing him in seats anymore.

after 7 years with Red Bull, Scott Speed got a fax firing him. ouch.
Dale Jr and Letarte will test next week at Daytona but a bunch of top teams will not.

Yeah...seen where he is suing Red Bull Racing now too. Says he's still looking for a ride for next season, but December is kind of late to be getting a jump on that.

can someone update the new teams and sponsors?

I'm curious as to what's happening with Hornish (personally i'd like to see allgaier brought up to replace him). I'm especially intrigued witht he Penske sponsorships considering Shell and Mobil likely won't sponsor cars on the same team.

Penske Racing is planning to run three NASCAR Sprint Cup and one Nationwide series team full time in 2011, though the entry for Sam Hornish Jr. is dependent on sponsorship. In 2010, Penske fielded three Sprint Cup teams (with drivers Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski and Hornish) and two Nationwide teams (with drivers Justin Allgaier and Keselowski). Keselowski won the Nationwide Series title, the first NASCAR championship for team owner Roger Penske. Approximately 50 people were laid off from the organization this week, with more cuts expected to come Friday. Hornish will definitely run the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup season opener, and the organization is working to land sponsorship to continue running his #77 team. "We need to take advantage of the resources we have going forward," said Walt Czarnecki, executive vice president of Penske Corp. "We haven't ceased our efforts. This just hasn't been a strong sponsorship climate. We had tough decisions to make. We have a couple of things going, but we had to base those decisions on today, not tomorrow." Penske says that if he can't find sponsorship for Hornish in NASCAR, he will run him in the Indianapolis 500.

'Officially' Hornish doesn't have a ride for 2011, but Penske says he'll be there. If Verizon stays on board..Hornish will probably move from the 77 to the 12 car...but you are correct...Mobil 1 left Penske as soon as Shell came aboard.

Miller is under contract with Penske still and thats what the #2 car is known for. The only way Shell would come on board with Penske was if Kurt drove their car.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Goodyear tire testing press conference at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday at noon will be streamed live on the web at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com/tiretest.

    http://ap.news-journalonline.com/dynamic/stories/C/CAR_NASCAR_DAYTONA_TEST?SITE=FLDAY&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Earnhardt was the first driver on the track Wednesday as 20 cars participated in the first day of a two-day Goodyear tire test.
"They smoothed out all the bumps," Earnhardt said. "The track is real smooth. It's got a lot of grip. It reminds me exactly of what Talledega was like when they finished (repaving) it."
The only incident of the day came when David Ragan sustained damage to the front quarter-panel of his Ford after losing control through the tri-oval. Testing will continue Thursday morning.

ON THE POTENTIAL FOR A BIG CRASH

Kurt Busch: "It definitely is increased. Like what someone asked about the physical side or the mental side. Mentally you're going to have to be that much sharper, that much more precise. If you think you have a hole, you definitely need to be in it. Somebody is going to take it that much quicker. Reaction time is going to be that much quicker. There's going to be bigger consequences when things are chosen in the wrong fashion."

NASCAR had better turn this thing around. if they ruin the 500, i can see them having really shitty attendance and ratings all year long.
