Blue Jackets season thread

Biggest difference is that we inked Foote in his 14th NHL season - he was 34 at the time - and we'd be getting Liles in his 6th NHL season at age 30. Not to mention Liles is a way better offensive defenseman than Foote was. But still, I can see being a little leery.

Richards is still out and he'll have a steep price for a rental. And I wouldn't trade Methot. He's been our best defenseman this year. Not a lot of people are going to take Huselius' contract. We'd have to take a big contract in return.

To get something good, you're going to have to give up something good. Probably a package with Voracek.

I wouldn't mind seeing Klesla dangled as trade bait.
  • TedSheckler
I'm sure Klesla could be included in any package. I wouldn't be disappointed.

Phoenix is getting absolutely pounded by Tampa tonight. 7-1 in the second.

Good or bad for the Jackets?

Ummm....we're chasing Phoenix, among others. So how is this bad? Unless you think they'll be so pissed off on Friday that they'll come in here with a 'tude? CBJ is on a roll and has taken on several teams on a roll recently, so they'll not be intimidated. Don't know if they'll win, but I'm happy to see Phoenix playin while we rest.

Points are points when the gain is in the other division. The Jackets will have to deal with the 'Yotes themselves if they're going to be serious about making a run.

Any chance the NHL will ever address the chronic inequity between the East and West?

Yeah, always help to have a team stand pat after a game. Tonight offers a team that will stay at 68 points as the Kings play the Ducks. Ducks have been in real trouble with their goalie situation since Hiller went down.

Also, Jackets have played 1 less game than most of rest of the teams in the West.

As to the balance, I'm not sure the NHL can address it. How would they? Usually it is a little closer, but the West is straight dominating the East top to bottom this year. The Tampa game being the odd exception right now.

Good news last night for Columbus:

    Phoenix loses
    Anaheim loses in regulation

We pass the Ducks w/ a win on Friday and an Anaheim loss/tie against Minnesota. Tonight's hopes:

    Detroit over Dallas in regulation.
Preds and Blackhawks ends in regulation; preferably with a Preds win (since Chicago is closer) but either would do.
Wild and Kings ends in regulation.

    No overtime!

This is the most important help for the CBJ as they try to rise above all of the others. No 3 point games for anyone but the CBJ :). No OTL's and no SOL's.

Looks like Richards asking price is huuuge. Jackets would likely have to give up the farm to get him:

The Post has learned Nieuwendyk told Rangers GM Glen Sather on Tuesday that it would cost the Blueshirts three young studs off the roster, believed to be Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan, for the privilege of renting Brad Richards.

Not sure that is worth it.
Richards is good, but the Jackets farm system is not bad and that could hurt them in the long run if they make the deal.

With about 1-2 games less played, the Jackets are 4 points from the playoffs.
    5. Wild, 70 points, 60 games played
    6. Kings, 70 points 60 games
    7. Preds, 70 points, 60 games
    8. Flames, 70 points, 62 games

    9. Hawks, 68 points, 60 games
    10. Stars, 68 points, 60 games
    11. Ducks, 68 points, 61 games
    12. Jackets, 66 points, 59 games

Jackets have work to do, but since they have 1 less game so far than everyone else, they can use that as an advantage. As other have mentioned, OT is bad for the mess in the west. Jackets just need to get points and see what happens around them.
  • gorocks99
Exactly. We'd probably have to send Voracek, Brassard, and someone else to match that asking price. No freaking way.

Ducks have played 61 games through last night's loss. They're ripe to tumble, as they've lost their last four. Dallas, too, their form is tanky as of late (1-8-1 in their last 10). If form continues over the next week we should be in 9th or 10th place soon.

Thanks, fixed that. Yeah, my good friend is a Ducks fan and is really ticked at the goalie situation. Hiller may be out for the season from what he has heard, which would be a huge blow. Buddy says the Ducks called up this guy named Emery that is supposed to be good. We'll see if he starts.
Ducks just added Tampa backup goalie Dan Ellis and traded the awful Curtis McElhinney.
  • End of Line
If NYR gave up Staal, Dubinsky, and Stepan. They would be heading in the wrong direction.

Especially for a rental. If he were guaranteed to re-sign, I'd consider it.

Or guaranteed not to have post-concussion issues.

Last night, the good: LA beat Minnesota in regulation; there were no overtime games.

The bad: The Blackhawks steamrolled the Preds, and although that knocks the Preds down a peg, the Hawks pull away from the Jackets.

The ugly: Detroit was shellacked by Dallas 4-1 for the Stars first win in forever, and moves Dallas to 70 points.

    Tonight's rooting interests:
    Jackets over Phoenix (duh)
Wild over Ducks in regulation (either team winning would do, but we're closer to Anaheim so they get the loser's nod)
    Sharks over Flames in regulation

    1 Vancouver 62 87
    2 Detroit 61 80
    3 San Jose 62 76
    4 Phoenix 62 75
    5 Los Angeles 61 72
    6 Dallas 61 70
    7 Minnesota 61 70
    8 Chicago 61 70
    --------------------------------------------
    9 Nashville 61 70
    10 Calgary 62 70
    11 Anaheim 61 68
    12 Columbus 59 66
    13 St. Louis 60 63
    14 Colorado 61 59
    15 Edmonton 61 48

Crazy game at Nationwide so far. Coyotes went up 2-0 early, but the Jackets have scored three power play goals in a row and lead 3-2 midway through the 2nd. Gotta hold on!
  • gorocks99
4-2 Jackets! Calvert with two goals tonight!
  • rydawg5
    I'm lovin it

    CALVERT HAT TRICK!!!! 5-2 Jackets!!!
  • Wildcat24
Jesus, this is awesome. I was very impressed with Calvert when I saw him live.
