  Personally, I preferred the more subtle fourth-wall comment by Davos about how the place (Dragonstone) looks different because of how, in the third season (or was it fourth?) when Stannis and company were there, it was all dark and seen from inside dingy rooms and the dungeon and now, you're getting these big, expansive outdoors shots.

  How about when Jon and Tyrion were walking up the steps and Tyrion referenced Starks not fairing well when they venture south. Right as Jon points out he's not a Stark, the Dragon swoops on their heads. Real subtle.

  It was an on-the-nose acknowledgement of all the fans/bloggers/critics constantly complaining about emo, sulking Jon Snow. If you weren't in on the joke, then it fell flat.

  I looked at it as more as an old-school reference because Jon was always classed as brooding or gloomy in the books to where other characters would randomly point it out.
