I'm not because I was outraged about the story when it first came out. It is a lesson for me though - wait until the facts are known until making a judgement.Tiernan;1653436 wrote:Uh oh...Dr Boogers is gonna be all "Told Ya So" now.
What happened here was a stupid sophomoric stunt. It sounds as though this group of kids has done a lot of this stuff to each other. That is a far, far cry from a hate crime. My first reaction to this story was way wrong. -

The spin of the perpetrators:Con_Alma;1653338 wrote:http://m.19actionnews.com/19actionnews/db_348172/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=rRgOzXVI
"
19 Action News Investigative Reporter Scott Taylor discovered the shocking new developments in the Ice Bucket Challenge attack on a 15-year-old Bay Village, Ohio boy.
Multiple sources are telling 19 Action News that the five teenage boys police have identified as suspects had no idea their good friend was autistic when they dumped water mixed with bodily fluids on him.
The mixture included urine and spit and nothing else.
The incident took place over night on August 18 and was reported by the victims parents as an assault on September 8.
Sources say the group of teens including the victim have a history of pulling physical pranks on each other including bleaching of hair and shaving off an eyebrow while a teen is sleeping.
They have grown up together and hung out as a group all summer long. The group didn't single the victim out or bully him.
Sources close to the investigation tell 19 Action News it was a prank typical of this group of friends and not an attack on a disabled person."
I just look a little on my own and easily begin to punch holes into this fabric of lies.
Not reported until September 8
Gosh here is a September 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] Fox News Account of the incident including the video.

'No doubt' that Bay Village teen targeted in fake ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has autism, lawyer says
Attorney Dean Valore said Thursday that the Cleveland Clinic diagnosed the teen as having moderate autism and that he has been treated for it for years.

The kid's been running with this same group of pals for years. Whatever his diagnosis, I don't believe they'd be hanging around with him for that long a period of time if their only aim was to bully him and take advantage of him. On top of that, this group apparently been pulling these stunts on each other all the time ala "Jackass". Just because they are stupid kids doesn't make them heartless criminals.
The "victim's" family soliciting and accepting donations is a huge, huge red flag. -

You said that you jumped too quickly to judgment in the first place. But here you are dismissing things without all the info. Did they pull these stunts on each other...or did they always pull them on the autistic kid because he was the one that would take it and not say anything? Just because they hung around for years doesn't mean they treated the kid like a friend. Maybe they hung out with him and treated him like shit all the time and laughed about it behind his back when he wasn't around.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1653485 wrote:The kid's been running with this same group of pals for years. 2. The perpetrators claim to be his long time close friends, but they do not know that for several years he has been receiving regular treatment for autism.
3. This report smacks of perpetrator spin as they try to mitigate their guilt.. Oh we just friends, joking like we always do. They humiliated and degraded a handicapped kid. Decent people reacted to it. Now they try to lie their way out. -

I don't think it's that outrageous that it could be true. Maybe the kid and/or parents didn't want people to know and kept it to themselves. He's not handicapped, so it's possible you wouldn't know anything if that were the case.isadore;1653515 wrote:. the quality of the news report and their fact checking ability, when it is so easy to refute parts of it in seconds.

quite possible...people often do not broadcast their medical conditions, ( that's why HIPPA laws exist)especially something like functioning autism wqhere the goal may be normalization.2. The perpetrators claim to be his long time close friends, but they do not know that for several years he has been receiving regular treatment for autism.
That will be easy enough to prove or disprove. Sometimes what people don't say is as important as what they do say. While the attorney for the victim was antimate about stating that the boy is being treated for autism, he said nothing to contradict the statement that the boys are friends and have been hanging around all summer pranking each other.3. I am so glad that we have reached a consensus about waiting for the facts to be presented fully before rushing to judgement. -

A lawyer representing the family of the Bay Village teen targeted in the fake ALS Ice Bucket challenge says there is "no doubt" that the 15-year-old has autism.
Attorney Dean Valore said Thursday that the Cleveland Clinic diagnosed the teen as having moderate autism and that he has been treated for it for years.

Most practitioners describe autism as a spectrum. At one end of the spectrum are those who cannot function in society due to their impairments, while at the other end are those "quirky" people who can lead independent and successful lives. According to Autism Europe, the functioning level of an individual describes where he or she falls on this spectrum.
Characteristics of Moderate Autism
Those who have moderate autistic disorders may carry a diagnosis of classic autism, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett's syndrome, or PDD-NOS. Adults with moderate autism often require assistance, but they can have some level of independence in their jobs and living conditions. Both children and adults with moderate autism spectrum disorders may exhibit the following characteristics.
Normal or Below-Normal Mental Functioning
A person with moderate autism may have some degree of mental retardation, or he or she may have a normal IQ of about 100. This person may find self-care tasks challenging.
Difficulty Communicating
Someone with moderate autism is likely to have trouble communicating. While he or she may be verbal, it may be very challenging to converse in a typical manner. Speech may include some functional communication and some repetitive language or non-functional verbal attempts. The individual may prefer to communicate through signs or technological devices.
Some Behavior Concerns
. An adult or child with moderate autism may be over or under-sensitive to sounds, sights, and other types of stimulation. This may lead to behavior concerns. Additionally, it's common for those with moderate autism to actively resist any change in their normal routine and to display behaviors like rocking, hand flapping, walking on toes, or spinning in circles
Socially Aloof
A person with a moderate autism spectrum disorder will appear aloof. He or she may not try to interact with others, and it may be very challenging to initiate an interaction with this person. However, someone with moderate autism is generally aware that others are in the room.

we have extremely noticeable characteristics of the MODERATELY Autistic.
we have a group of supposedly close friends who never noticed their supposed buddy was autistic.

What is happening now within the local power structure is an attempt to put the fix in.
A false narrative has been introduced, boys will be boys, they were all buddies crap. A media outlet which is incompetent and possibly venal has broadcast this lie. Now the local good old boys can let these five scum bags off much lighter than they deserve.
They degraded and humiliated a handicapped young man and they are probably only get a wrist slap for it. -
isadoreThe best hope for real justice is a video and an enraged public.
It got some justice in Steubenville.
It got some justice in the Ray Rice Case
and it is the only hope for real justice in this case. -

"He was embarrassed because he did not know what the contents were until afterwards and then he didn't want anybody to know," the student's mother told the station last week. "They used his phone to tape it and they put it up on Instagram."
Last week, Spaetzel said video of the incident is one of the most disturbing things he's seen in his career. He called it "reprehensible."
