Elementary School Children Killed By Gunman in Connecticut

I understand he's probably upset, but he shows a complete lack of understanding about what mental illness/psychopathy is and does the standard "blame the media" fallacy whenever stuff like this happens. I suppose it's progress that we've moved on from blaming Marilyn Manson to blaming Scott Pelley, but it's still idiotic.

He also felt that his opinion was important enough to write out a thread on reddit, but no one else apparently has permission to express their views. Honestly, he just sounds like a typical teenager , speaking in absolutes and unable to see the world outside of black and white, though hopefully that's relating to the tragedy and not his general personality.

Gotcha. That's retarded. I like Pulp Fiction, but that doesn't mean I'll ever do blow or kill people for money.

I like pulp fiction too... can I stick an adrenaline needle in your heart?

    Well that's your problem.

My cousin teaches in Brookfield. A friend of hers teaches at Sandy Hook Elem. but is ok. She knows many others and was "numb" last evening waiting for the list of names to come out. Over the years my cousin has had many kids from Sandy Hook and Newtown in her classes. I've read reports and watched coverage today. This is all just terrifying and sickening.

    Pretty much sums up 4chan.

You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations*, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem

My favorite part of that video is the part where renowned psychologist Dr. Park Dietz emphatically states that in order to prevent the propagation of future mass murderers, he's been urging the media for years to not show pictures of the killer, to not talk about body counts and to not devote special shows to the perpetrator's exploits. And yet, Park Dietz starred in a two-hour long documentary called "The Ice Man Tapes: The Confessions of a Mafia Hit Man," in which Dietz interviewed mass murderer Richard Kulklinski and asked him directly to ballpark how many victims Kulklinski had killed, and the details into how the slayings were conducted. LOL. In the film, Kulklinksi estimates that he murdered over 200 people.

Off topic, but they made a movie about the Iceman recently too with some big name actors. It went film festival but I would guess it'll probably get a mainstream release at some point. As morbid as it was, I enjoyed the HBO interview (don't think that was Dietz). I think Kuklinski was pretty much full of shit - not that he didn't kill people, but fabricating stuff to make the stories better.

I think I'd draw a rather large distinction between a mafia hitman and some random mass murderer.

I do agree that maybe the media should re-think how and what they report. I like the idea of not reporting the name or showing pictures (it ultimately is irrelevant), except you know that gets out at some point.

But there's definitely a very unecessary element of drama, and "glorification" (to a sick, twisted individual) that could be avoided. I don't know if that would make a difference...and I'm sure it would have free speech advocates up in arms.

I watched that HBO interview and it was Dietz. You are right, it was a very interesting piece. And I also agree that The Ice Man was making stories up as he went along. Talking about how he took one guy to a catacomb or some shit and then left him there tied up and came back several days later to find nothing left, not even the bones, because the rats had completely devoured him. Or a tiger or something else completely unbelievable.

To that point... just as big of an issue as the media is the law enforcement officials feeding information as soon as they hear anything. The media can't come out with these reports in real time without being told the who, what, how, and why.

I hope somebody adds to the death toll if any of these mother fuckers show up in Connecticut.

What exactly are they trying to accomplish?

    Publicity.

"Thank god for dead babies" signs just proves you're screaming for attention.

They tried to protest in my hometown a year or two ago. That didn't work out so well for them.

How much would an armed police officer cost each school a year? Wanna eliminate these things, provide a threat to the lunatic.

No, just do a better job of controlling access. It's actually not complicated when you think about it.

What were they trying to protest in your area?
