Paleo eating

No problem. I fast 16 hours daily and never go into a starvation type state. You'd really have to go days to really be hitting starvation. I think the term "starvation mode" was developed by supplement companies and "broscience" so they'd get people to eat their "5-6 small meals every 2-3 hours" which is also a crock.Anna-Town;1060948 wrote:I always thought of it as a caloric deficit for weeks at a time, not as much intermittent fasting. But that is good info.
Thanks -
Azubuike24Good stuff. I don't buy the whole "caloric deficit" either. It all depends what your focus/goals are. I could estimate my caloric "needs", but it's still impossible with any accuracy to measure this because of all of the other factors. Even if you were within say 20%, that 20% inaccuracy could be swayed by so many other things.
The best measure, IMO, is are you eating to a point where you aren't hungry and are able to perform how you want. If that's not the case, change it. That may include cutting stuff out, adding stuff in and might mean increasing/decreasing the amount of any of those things that can contribute to it.
Being able to sustain a fast for up to 36 hours (that's the absolute longest I've done it) is a beautiful thing. Being able to go 12-18 hours daily is my ideal approach, usually sticking between 14-16 on most days between last meal and then primary workout/activity. It has also been best for body composition, cognitive function and overall energy level. With that said, it has been a long process to find my "sweet spot", so recommending this to people who I work with or influence isn't just as easy as "it worked for me, try the exact same thing." -

Thanks!Anna-Town;1060910 wrote:Best of luck OSH. Keep us posted with your results and struggles.
No real struggles, as of now. Really enjoying mixing things up in the kitchen. My wife joined me for the meal tonight: mashed faux-tatoes, lentils, and pork chops. We'll have some sugar-free peach jell-o once it's set. It was a nice dinner. I am going to try to make some white chili or lentil soup tomorrow. I need something that lasts a bit and mixes up the textures.
I have an interesting recipe that I'll be trying soon and VERY soon. It's a cauliflower-crust pizza! Cannot wait! -

Yeah! Just got introduced to it. Fried them up (just as they turned brown), food processor, and the sprinkled some garlic salt and pepper on them. They may need another shot of heat, so just pop them in the microwave.Sonofanump;1061629 wrote:cauliflower?
I hear you can do it with white beans too. Haven't tried that though. This is the second time I've done the faux-tatoes and they are pretty good. They don't taste like potatoes, just a different consistency than what I'm used to eating. Still tastes like cauliflower, in my opinion. -

I steam them so they are soft and put butter on them.OSH;1061729 wrote:Yeah! Just got introduced to it. Fried them up (just as they turned brown), food processor, and the sprinkled some garlic salt and pepper on them. They may need another shot of heat, so just pop them in the microwave.

That's silly. No way is the "beating on the body" from running causing people to drop over dead. Heart conditions maybe but not from the actual running.BR1986FB;793563 wrote:The jury is out on some of this "endurance" cardio. More & more info is coming to light of all of these distance runners dropping over dead at young ages because of the beatings their bodies are taking. I'm cool with HIIT but marathons and crap like that, nah.
"A study on London Marathon runners over a 20 year period, in fact, found that with a rate of death of 1 in 67,414 (representing 1 in 2,000,000 miles run) marathon running was no more dangerous than many other daily activities."
"regular exercise protects you from heart attacks over broad time frames; for example, over the course of a year regular exercisers will have fewer cardiac failures than their sedentary counterparts. Also, some studies have not linked extremely strenuous exercise with cardiac damage: for example, when sports medicine specialists at the University of California studied 23 ultramarathon runners who completed the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run, a rugged race through the Sierra Mountains over steep terrain and through temperature extremes, they were unable to find any race-related cardiac damage" -

By "beatings their bodies are taking" I meant their heart. Last I checked, nobody ever died from bad knees.said_aouita;1062433 wrote:That's silly. No way is the "beating on the body" from running causing people to drop over dead. Heart conditions maybe but not from the actual running.

Your link seems to have rounded down, " For every 50,000 athletes, one will be stricken during such prolonged activity" while I found the numbers as 1 in 67,414.
Not a big difference. imo
Heart disease has been the #1 killer for people over 65 for quite a long time. If an adult runs marathons and dies, suddenly people are blaming the running? I'm confident the health benefits gained from running outweigh the risks. -

As far as marathons go, we agree to disagree.said_aouita;1062861 wrote: I'm confident the health benefits gained from running outweigh the risks. -

Found these at the market. I put them in my salad when I don't have meat prepared before hand. -
SonofanumpAny suggestions for a store bought lentil soup? I usually buy Progresso, but wondering if there is somehting better out there?
-
Azubuike24Any suggestions on where to find raw milk? I'd also like to look into finding a place (near Columbus) to get grass-fed beef. I've found other places but they are usually a few hours away. Don't mind making the drive, but it's tough during basketball season

Don't think they will have raw milk, but grassfed for sure. Will definately have grassfed beef. -

How far are you from Justin? Not sure if his grandma sells their beef to people on the outside but he gets hooked up with a sweet deal. Your best bet is to find a farmer and buy it by the quarter, half or a full cow. "Whole Paycheck' will make you grab your ankles at their prices.Azubuike24;1063192 wrote:Any suggestions on where to find raw milk? Azubuike24I've done the grass-fed retail schtick for a while. I've purchased some ground from a few farmers as well. I've found it in 4 or 5 retail places, but it's usually limited selection in-terms of cuts (probably because very few people buy some of the other stuff).
Yeah, I know about a few sites to find them, like Eat Wild, but would be interested in other avenues if possible. Price isn't a major concern, but source seems to be my biggest barrier. -

I think this is the opposite for me and few other I know. I thought the fat layers kept you warm.

Been there a few times. It's always an event to just see something that outrageous right off a random freeway exit in the middle of Ohio. It's a pretty cool store, but of the three trips I've made, I've purchased maybe a total of a dozen things. It's always been more of a field trip instead of a shopping trip. I can't say I'd frequent there if I was a resident or it was within a reasonable distance, but it's a place to go to at least say you've been there.said_aouita;1063719 wrote:Anybody from C-bus make the road trip down to Jungle Jims?

Are we talking about people who are constantly training for marathons or just doing them?BR1986FB;1062865 wrote:As far as marathons go, we agree to disagree.
I do probably 5 (give or take a few) 12+ mile runs or events (not always an event sometimes just what I feel like running) a year and I don't think it's going to be particularly harmful. Sure if you were constantly training hard and doing a million miles a week it's probably rough on your body but that's the same with anything. I bet if you look at people who lift, even on a paleo diet, an insane amount a week you'll find they have health problems.
