2017 OSU Football Discussion

Just read another article on him doing this. Sounds like he is a great fit. I honestly thought he might head into the wrestling ring after football.

Marcus Hooker committed. Hope he turns out as good as his brother. Only a three star but if I am not mistake his brother was a three star as well.

You're right. Malik was also a 3* coming out of high school.

This offer surprised me because OSU had previously been focused on Anthony Cook and Tyson Campbell to try to round out their DB class. I think Campbell is probably headed elsewhere (likely LSU), so the staff decided to take a chance on a high upside guy. Hooker had worked out at OSU in June, and then again at FNL, and performed very well. His ranking may rise during his senior night, but even if it doesn't, the staff really likes his potential.

and there's nothing quite like the extra impetus to be 'better than your brother'...I think he's going to be a good one

JK Dobbins was the first to lose his black stripe. Not much of a surprise since everyone is talking about him possibly being Webers backup.

Pope committed. Was kind of a forgone conclusion since he pushed back his commitment date so the Buckeyes could see if they could lure the guy in from Cali. I think Pope will fit right in.

Glad the staff finally gave Pope the green light. He wanted to be a Buckeye very badly, so it's nice to see that dream come true for him. A LB class of Teradja Mitchell, Dallas Gant, and K'Vaughan Pope is spectacular. If the staff can somehow convince Tuliaupupu or even Gaoteote to join the class, they'll find space for either of them since they're both ridiculously talented. My guess is that the LB class will be set with the three that are committed though.

I think you are right. I know they kept saying they were waiting on his transcripts, but the rumor mills were saying they were only taking three Lbs in this class. I think they may have saw the writing on the wall with the other two. I assume that is why they finally allowed Pope on board. I would assume if one of the other two were to decide to be a Buckeye Meyer would make room.

This is kind of a bad side of recruiting. You have a kid that wants to be part of your team yet you are waiting to see if a higher ranked kid will commit or not. I love the recruiting process just makes me sick that these schools lead these kids on sometimes. I know its part of the game but they are only 17-19 year old kids. Still pretty impressionable at that age.

Ohio State currently sits at 83 scholarship players, with the max being 85. Darius Slade transferred out right before camp, and Dylan Thompson (who is still with the team) lost his scholarship because of academic issues last year. Either the staff knows something behind the scenes, or the Slade transfer opened up a scholarship that wasn't expected to be available. Taking Marcus Hooker was also a sign that there were more scholarships available than expected, I think, as well. That might have also had to do with the staff being pretty sure that they weren't getting Tyson Campbell, or the rumor that Andrew Chatfield may be looking to de-commit since the Florida schools are starting to offer him.

I think the Ohio State staff does a pretty good job of being as honest as possible with recruits, especially with how selective they have to be since they're recruiting at such a high level right now. That's not to say that they do everything right, but it does seem like they're pretty straight up with kids about if there's room. They actually told Pope to look around at other schools while he was playing the waiting game, so he wouldn't be left high and dry if they didn't have room for him. I do agree that the transcript excuse was to buy some time, but at least they encouraged him to look around and be prepared.

Anyway, the class currently sits at 17, so there's a max of 8 spots left. I think they're definitely looking to go with a full 25, so there's room for the following, in my opinion...

WR - Kamryn Babb, Blue Smith
    OL - Jackson Carman
    DB - Anthony Cook
DL - Tyreke Smith, Micah Parsons, Jayson Oweh

I think those 7 are guys that they REALLY want. The 8th and final spot could go to another offensive lineman, or do a DT like Tommy Togiai or Nesta Silvera if either of them want in. There is also the possibility that Antwuan Jackson (DT who transferred from Auburn to Blinn Junior College) could end up at Ohio State next year too. Like I said before too, Solomon Tuliaupupu and Palaie Gaoteote will be names to watch closer to signing day. If they want in, the staff will try to fit them in, but they're both long shots at best.

Michael Hill to miss a couple of games per Urban Meyer. Not sure what Hill done since he just graduated. Said it was for disciplinary reasons.

Rumor is that he tested positive for marijuana during an NCAA-sanctioned drug test during the CFP last year. Not sure how that works, but I think the NCAA will suspend him, rather than OSU. I heard it could be as many as 4-6 games, so hopefully 2 is actually the correct number.

Also, supposedly Noah Brown tested positive at the same time, so that's most of the reason he ended up declaring early.

Again, that's just the rumor. Not sure if it's true, but it makes sense.

2018 WR target Kamryn Babb suffered a significant knee injury late last week. He may miss his entire senior season.

Not sure how this could possibly affect his recruitment at this point, but I would guess Ohio State will still pursue him. I believe he had a knee injury last year as well, so that's a bit concerning.

Just read it happened after the bowl game. Is that when they get tested? I figured it was before but I honestly do not know. Urban said a few and not sure what his idea of a few is but some of the stuff I have read was min 4 games. Guess time will tell since it is all rumors that I have been reading. I would think if it was just a failed drug test it would be a game. Since players in the past only missed a game, if I am not mistaken, for the same offense. Unless of course he tested for more than marijuana.

Of course if this was the SEC he would just have to go on a ride along or miss one play of the eight game against a div 3 opponent. lol

Chatfield decommitted. I am guessing he ends up at Florida or Fl St. I am wondering if Urban had a talk with him. Since rumblings are three higher ranked guys are going to end up at Ohio St. Oweh, Smith, and Parsons all are picked to end up at OSU. I hope they do, would be another great haul for Urban.

I'm not exactly sure when it occurred, but it was definitely around the time of the playoff game. I'm thinking maybe the results weren't completed until after the actual game since both Hill and Brown still played, but haven't heard a definitive answer. Definitely dumb by those guys, but it's ironic that a failed drug test may get him a multiple game suspension, but Bama's DE D'Shawn Hand got a DUI for being wasted, and sleeping in a running car, but he won't face a suspension.

From what I have heard, Urban still wanted Chatfield in this class, even with those other guys on the board. When Chatfield committed to OSU, he did not have an offer from any of the three big Florida schools. He now has an offer from Florida, one that he really coveted. I think the prospect of staying close to home, and still playing for a premier program was just too much for Ohio State to overcome. Like you said, though, the Buckeyes will be fine at DE. They have Brenton Cox committed in the 2018 class, a great chance at Tyreke Smith, Micah Parsons, and Jayson Oweh, plus they will still have Nick Bosa, Jonathan Cooper, and Chase Young on the roster next season too. They're loaded up for the foreseeable future at that position.

One or two of Bama's starters last year got caught with drugs and guns in the car and nothing happened. Maybe set out a series. I just remember thinking had that been one of OSU's player the book would have been thrown at them. Danny Kannel was going off about it on Twitter the other day. Talking how its a double standard in the SEC but the other conferences actually punish their players. He also suggested its time to have a commissioner for the NCAA.
  • mcburg93
Dave Biddle from Bucknuts said today it was an NCAA violation. Had it been an Ohio State violation it would have been one game maybe two. Sounds like something petty the way he was talking about it. So I am guessing it was an NCAA drug test. Looks like he is out four to six games.

Bama is a joke when it comes to suspensions. Saban just says he'll handle it "internally" and everyone in the media is cool with that because it's Saban. It's a joke.

And definitely agree the NCAA needs a football and basketball commissioner. It's time.

I am starting to like the commissioner idea. The SEC needs some governing. They do not punish players anything close to other conferences. It has to be a huge recruiting tool for them.
