MAC season chatter

Just got back from the Rockets game, and even though they looked out of synch most of the night, they found a way to win...good teams do that. This team just has that "it" factor this year, and I can see them making some noise in March--and it was nice to see Savage rockin' again : thumbup:

I mean, while I don't believe Toledo will be in the NCAAs as I think they'll have to punch a ticket automatically -- I think they'll lose at the very least one more regular-season game, possibly two, and, based on the conference's history of not getting at-large bids, one more loss will mean the Rockets will definitely need to win the MAC tourney to get in -- I hope I am wrong. Would like to see the Rockets get in, but with 5-14 Boston College being their best win against a big-conference school, I don't see anything more than three losses being enough for an at-large. They've gotta do work in Cleveland.

My hypothetical was if they win out and lose in the finals. Only 3 losses. I don't care what conference you're in, that's tough to pass up.

Still not sure Toledo has the numbers without a MAC tourney title. They have middle-of-the-pack SOS and RPI numbers and really no wins that truly jump out at you. It will be interesting to see what happens if your hypothetical plays out, but I don't think we'll have the luxury of that happening. I'd be very surprised if Toledo didn't lose once more before the post-season.

Being from Toledo, I hope they don't. It'd be cool to see them get in the dance.

I agree, just would be interesting. Butler went like 27-5 one year and had better numbers, but not great and I remember the media was pretty appalled they were left out.

The sad part is, I turkey believe Toledo is probably a top 40 team this year. The played Kansas tougher than most will at the Phog.

Last year, Middle Tennessee at 27-5, RPI of 28 and SOS of 129, was left out.

The Rockets are currently at 16-2, RPI of 39 and SOS of 154. They need to win the MAC...

What is it projected to be if they go 30-3??

The rpi isn't terrible, and I don't really know how it works, but should rise if they keep winning. SOS will go down or stay the same however.

KenPom and RealTimeRPI has them still losing 4 or 5 more games. Not sure what projected numbers would look like.

I will say, Toledo DID go on the road and try to play some decent games. Sure, they lost at KU, but they also won 4 true road games in the OOC. Unfortunately for them, Boston College has been a major disappointment, and Robert Morris just kicked 3 players off their team. Those were 2 possible NCAA Tournament teams that aren't even going to sniff it now. Detroit was good the last few years, but sucks now. Arkansas State is a team that could win the Sun Belt, so you never know.

Ohio somehow found themselves down 18 in the second half to fucking Central Michigan before coming back to win it. They're just in this rut against blah teams where they're playing down to their competition right now.

They just need wins. No bad losses.

At this point, they're either in the NCAA tourney with a MAC title, or they're in the NIT or worse.

The only difference these games make right now is if they win the Mac Tourney, what their seeding will be. Which is important, so keep winning and don't worry about style points.

True, but there's very little quite so annoying as when you're at friends and have a good buzz on and you turn on the computer to check scores and see they're down 48-30 to a shit team.

    Ohio > Toledo

    Damn good to see!
  • reclegend22
Yeah, Toledo is done. They will need to win the MAC Tournament, without question. They have zero shot to claim an automatic bid. They just don't have the quality wins to overcome what will ultimately be 4 or 5 losses for the Rockets.

Akron had a chance to take over sole possession of first place, and loses to lowly kent state..smh.
  • Laley23
No MAC team really ever had a shot to make the NCAAs without winning the tourney. As long as they get a 1 seed, they will be fine. A loss AT Ohio doesn't hurt that much.

Ohio might be the most bi-polar team in the country. In their last loss to West Mich, they were right with them at the half and were dominated in the second half. Today against Miami, they trailed by 15 at the half and then outscored them 50-28 in the second half to win by 7.

Like when they had to come back from 18 down in the 2nd half to beat Cent Mich a week or so ago.

    They're a weird group.

Indeed. If they played more complete games instead of getting hot in the second half, who knows where the Bobcats would be right now. If they can get it together 100%, the MAC tourney could get interesting.
