    Wants it over USC? why?

    University of Second Choice.

Seriously, it isn't an easy job and it is a very expensive place to live. This was a big deal with Tom O'Brien when he was back at Boston College - very expensive and the city doesn't support the program.

With respect to the Trojans Los Angeles won't support USC, or UCLA for that matter.

THIS JUST IN: Ed Orgeron resigns from USC after not getting head coaching job; turns down raise to be asst. head coach. (via @McMurphyESPN)

Illinois should be on the phone offering Orgeron the head gig right now.

Just lost all respect for this guy. He was was supposedly there for the kids, a players coach...then when things don't go his way, he bails on those players. Pathetic.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
The guy got demoted. What was he supposed to do? In every other profession when you get demoted you leave, I'm not sure why this is any different.

    This.

As a USC fan, I was ok with having him as the Head Coach for another year. They still face sanctions for another year and I think with Orgeron not being the HC, it will cause the guys who were on the fence about leaving early, to leave early. Guys like Lee(should leave anyways), Uko, Hayes Pullard, Aundrey Walker, Josh Shaw and Dion Bailey just to name a few. Like most new coaches, Sark will have to re-recruit these guys to stay.

Fickell stayed after he got demoted.

I'm guessing it might be because he wasn't able to get a HC gig that he liked and coaching under UM for a couple years would do wonders for his resume.

This is college, 18-22yr olds. This isn't the pros. You made a committment to the players to coach them. You were the interim coach. And lets be honest, the guy was NEVER going to get this job. If he didn't know that, then he was ignorant. What he just did is inexcusable to a bunch of players who have been through quite a bit this year. Terrible decision by him. Take the high road and show the players what committment is.

    "This is college, 18-22yr olds."

And its his career, I don't think anyone should judge him for this. There has never been a time in my life with any employer that I wouldn't walk away from a demotion. To the extent it affects 18-22 year olds that is an issue for Pat Haden. Why should he be held to a higher standard than anyone else?

And Buckeye fans have regretted it, ever since.
  • dlazz
Yeah, I'm okay with him leaving. USC basically said "fuck you" to him even though he succeeded.

Hope he goes to Washington and humiliates USC for the foreseeable future

Yeah. I didn't know that just because of the age demographic you work with, you should be willing to accept something that's obviously not what you're looking for as far as your career goes.

As for the "guy was NEVER going to get this job" part, probably true, but the timing had to be a real bastard for him. Take over for The Great Kiffin Fraud and immediately turn the team around to where pundits and the like are wondering if he's the best fit for the job. And then lose (badly) to the cross-town rival and hear that another guy got the job two days later.

While, in the short term, as far as keeping recruits goes, it might be a bit rough in SC-land, I also don't know about the wisdom of keeping a successful interim coach around when you bring in a new guy, at least when the new guy isn't on that short list of "made men" in coaching. It'd seem like the minute things got rough, there'd be calls for Orgeron to take the helm again.

They only have a low-level bowl game to play, it's not like he bailed on them in the middle of an NCG run or something. I'm fine with what he did.

Really good post. I agree completely.

Well, we can agree to disagree. But I think it was classless of him to do what he did. It sends the wrong message. And IMO, could affect someone else hiring him as well. It doesn't look good. And I could give a crap, cause I hate USC.

These statements can also be applied to USC regarding their handling of the situation.

"And IMO, could affect someone else hiring him as well."

The University of Virginia would hire him in a heartbeat if they could afford to buy out Mike London's ridiculous contract (that's another thread in itself). Orgeron was more or less fired by USC, and like most people fired he left. It isn't as if Sarkisiam won't bring his own people in.

I highly doubt he was fired. He was the INTERIM head coach. How many INTERIM coaches, in any sport end up getting the job? Most were/are assts who take over. It rarely happens. Again, if he had some grand illision he was going to be hired, then he is not very bright. Not sure how USC handled this poorly. It was common sense they were interviewing people as the season went on.

That's fine, then it is ok for him to leave. USC made their decision and it didn't involve him going forward. I don't know how that makes him classless or otherwise jerky. It is normal business matters.

Is it normal? How many interim guys have you seen bolt when they didn't get the job? Name some........
BTW, this isn't just a normal job. This is a top 10 job.

Typically an interim coach will coach out the season before a new head coach is hired or it is early in a long season(NBA/MLB) where an interim guy is just there while an in-season hire is made. This was a pretty awkward time for USC to offer Sarkisian the job, they must've thought some other big programs would be after him.

Awkward time? Meyer was hired before the bowl game? Many coaches are hired before bowl games. Gives them time to recruit, watch and evaluate current players on the roster during practice as well as the bowl game. I think its pretty common when a school is looking for a coach, that they hire them after the regular season. This is a time when recruiting is key.
