Conference Tournament Discussion Thread

Azubuike24Has a team finishing 2 games under .500 in their own conference ever gotten an at-large bid?
Wins OOC over Harvard, Florida State, UNC Asheville (all Tourney teams).
Wins ITC over West Virginia, Notre Dame (both Tourney teams).
Wins over South Florida and Seton Hall (both bubble teams).
Losses to Tennessee and Seton Hall (both bubble teams).
Interesting case. -

Yes. I wont be there, in any capacity. Kinda pissed. Id like to at least do the graphics since I can make some killer stats and information about both schools, but Ill be at the Bedford game doing Computer Graphics.vball10set;1108082 wrote:^^thanks for the report...will BCSN have it Friday (prolly tape delay)?
As for Tape Delay, yes. OHSAA doesnt allow any live feeds during the state tourney. -
HereticUConn's trying to get back. Down 4 with 2:48 to play.
EDIT: Or down two with 2:16 to play and WV taking a timeout because in the past couple minutes their lead went from double digits to one possession. -
JugheadWhat's with this MSG crowd? Cheering for UCONN like they are a major underdog, never mind the fact they are defending National Champions. These bastards are going to steal a spot that belongs to more deserving mid-major teams.
The Big East and its paper rankings. -
chicago510UConn is going to mess around all year and get into the NCAA tourney.
-
HereticThe Sons of the Soil choked big time. Blew an 11-point lead in the final minutes of regulation and then only scored two in OT to get eliminated by UConn.
-
killer_ewokMaybe we'll do another 6 OT's tomorrow.
-
JugheadRefs swallowed their whistles on all things related to a foul against UCONN in that OT period. Even though it probably meant nothing, there absolutely was a foul on that last second 3-point shot attempt. I'd consider that a departing present to WVU since they are leaving the conference.

Paper rankings? -

Connecticut is just up the road from NYC. Likley a very large Husky contingent in the crowd. What's more, WVU is not liked by anyone in the conference--- especially after the litigation that has taken place the past few months.Jughead;1108190 wrote:What's with this MSG crowd? To repeat what Killer Ewok stated--- Paper rankings?? -
sportswizuhrdI almost counted them out when they were down by 11 but then Napier showed the heart and hustle that he referred to in the post game interview and they came back. Gottlieb was absolutely right about Drummond stepping up and shutting down Jones late in the 2nd and in OT. Lamb kind of disappeared too(other than the 3 in OT) but the difference between him and Jones was that someone else stepped up for UConn. Excited for the game tomorrow.
This team will be in the tournament and will be scary. They are not only playing with the memory of last season but they are playing for THIS season and NEXT season. Bad grades will do that to you.
Two side notes...Kemba Walker won his 5th professional game with the Bobcats last night....He won that many last seasons Big East Tournament. Also, and I hope I am not jinxing them with this but the Huskies have not lost a tournament of any kind since losing to Virginia Tech in the 2nd round of the NIT Tournament in 2010. 16 tournament wins in a row. 3-2010 Maui Invite, 5-2011 Big East Tourny, 6-NCAA Tourny, 2-2012 Big East Tourny.
Rec...(or anyone) with the success that Duke has had have they(or even anyone else but Duke comes to mind first) ever won that many in a row? -

Yes, paper rankings. AKA a falsely elevated SOS that really doesn't exist.killer_ewok;1108227 wrote:Paper rankings? -

News to me too. -

I sure hope the Huskies rent a Party Bus to take to the games and soak it all in because their team and their sleazy head coach will be playing for absolutely nothing next year. This is what happens when you choose to play for a seedy program.chicago510;1108211 wrote:UConn is going to mess around all year and get into the NCAA tourney.
After he loses Lamb and Drummond this summer, the writing will be on the wall in Storrs for Jim Calhoun and, for the good of the school, he should then hang up the whistle. Because he is a long, limbless reptile, however, he will not. -

Outside of the school being fairly close, I would assume they are getting support because of their run last year.Jughead;1108190 wrote:What's with this MSG crowd? Calhoun returned Saturday for the season finale just after 5 days after back surgery. I seem to remember Coach K sitting out 19 games after having surgery in the middle of the season. Have to give props to Calhoun for that no matter how much you hate him.reclegend22;1108468 wrote: Because he is a long, limbless reptile, however, he will not. -
sportswizuhrdHope Seton Hall can make it to the tournament. Really want to see Herb Pope make it to the dance before his career is over. Dude got shot 5 teams and almost died and after a workout collapsed and was so close to dying again that the Sports Information Department actually prepared a press release to announce his death. Damn!.
Louisville up 11 with 12:20 left. -

I do commend Calhoun for being there for his team, which is exactly what K would have done, too, had his situation allowed that to be an option. Regardless of any of that, that's not the gripe I have with Calhoun.sportswizuhrd;1108544 wrote:Calhoun returned Saturday for the season finale just after 5 days after back surgery. It's that he has a history of running a program that operates in the shadows, with seemingly no disregard for what is right and wrong -- this includes not only playing but starting players who are known burglars, recruiting violations and major academic instability that has landed UConn as ineligible candidates for the 2013 NCAA Tournament. -

Dude also seems to be a pretty big douche. Nut punches and headbutts.sportswizuhrd;1108551 wrote:Dude got shot 5 teams and almost died and after a workout collapsed and was so close to dying again that the Sports Information Department actually prepared a press release to announce his death. Azubuike24And no, Seton Hall is not going to dance IMO. It just opened up for USF tonight...and they get the 14th seed. Wouldn't be surprised to see Nova win.

Agreed on both points. I don't think 9-11 in the BE is going to be good enough.Azubuike24;1108616 wrote:And no, Seton Hall is not going to dance IMO. It just opened up for USF tonight...and they get the 14th seed. Wouldn't be surprised to see Nova win.
And South Florida spanked Nova twice this year, but I think the Wildcats are a deceiving 5-13. They lost a bunch of close games. Reasonably talented team. If they come to play there's upset potential. -
MulvaI just saw this stat.
From 1985 through 2011, 107 out of 113 teams (94.7%) in the ACC that finished above .500 in the ACC standings made the NCAA tournament. Bodes well for NC State and Miami.
Did a little digging out of curiosity. It happened 29 times from 1983 to 2008 - for regular season records only.Azubuike24;1108124 wrote:Has a team finishing 2 games under .500 in their own conference ever gotten an at-large bid?
1992 Iowa State went 5-9 in the Big Eight, and 1998 Florida State was 6-10 in the ACC.
