Michigan at Ohio State...1/29...Thoughts...

See my edit. Kid has a ton of skill and upside. But he settles for 3s too often, and he isnt a great shooter. Not close to Buford. He also is a tremendous slasher, but to be able to finish he has too get a lot stronger. HSers are knocking him down and frustrating him. He doesnt really have post play, which doesnt matter. His ball handling needs to improve, and defense REALLY needs to improve.

Sounds like Derek Willis...still somewhat skeptical of him but Calipari treats his scholarships like gold...

Lenzelle was the MVP again. 8 offensive rebounds. OSU killed Mich on the boards and got to the line and that was the difference.

Actually, Lenzelle is what sealed this game. He played well all around. But his rebounding was even better than it usually was. 13 boards, 8 offensive. He is doing exactly what OSU needs. Sully and Thomas get so much attention, he is taking advantage of it. It wasn't a pretty game. But its good to see OSU do well when Sullinger and Buford had less than stellar performances.
Again, what I am loving, is DEFENSE. This team is playing tremendous defense the past handful of games. And that is the difference. They may struggle offensively at times, but defense has been consistant.
And I will say this, seeing Burke in person, he is good. He is patient, very good handles, sees the floor great. Better than I thought. Although he really wasn't much of a factor as Craft kept him pretty under control for the most part. But he played a nice game.

Biggest thing I noticed from this game was the improvement from the free throw line. That's going to be key for the Buckeyes going forward.

Mustafaa could be even considered in the top 2. He has been balling, but doesnt have the fundamentals and is dumb as a bag of rocks. But at least he shows up and plays hard for big games. Nigel settles and Loving settles and plays poor too often.
    says this guy about Loving...:D
I honestly think he is the 4th best player in Toledo at this moment.

    1. Nigel Hayes (JR) (when he wants to be) is unstoppable
    2. Mark Donnal (JR). Beilin got a STEAL with this kid. Next Pittsnoggle if he is allowed to play the outside
    3. Loving (JR)
    4. Mookie Mustafaa (SR)
I agree about Loving and Nigel. Not sure why so many of the recruiting services have Loving ahead of Nigel but Nigel brings more to the game than Loving, IMO. I would take Hayes ahead of Loving. I really like Donnal's game.

As far as your other players, is Cookie Monster(wtf?) ahead of Vito Brown(I don't know his class, I believe UM is looking at him too) or Getty's? I think so but haven't seen much of Brown and when I did he seemed disinterested. Also, Getty's is just big(reminds me of Storm Stanley).

Burke was a huge factor. UM scored 49 points. With 13 points and 5 assists he accounted for 1/2 UM's points. I was impressed.

Craft was also impressive. He scored 7 points on 4 shots , had 4 assists, 2 steals, and only 2 turnovers.

Both PG's played winning basketball. Craft just had more help.

Because the program was in the dumps before he was hired, and he instantly turned it into an elite program. He has proven to be one of the best recruiters out there. He knows what he is doing. I'm not going to question him because I remember how it was before he was the coach.

I still remember a thread on the old site where everyone was talking about the state championship game Northland vs. Princeton. It was almost entirely guys who had not watched any HS basketball all year, but went to the championship game and thought it made them experts on who were the best prospects. This was before Weatherspoon was offered by Matta. Sully was basically double and triple teamed the whole game and JD went off for like 30 or something with a bunch of highlight dunks. EVERYONE, almost every poster in the thread was bashing and questioning Matta. They were so sure that he made the wrong choice and should have offered JD INSTEAD of Sully. I laughed at them back then and I'm still laughing about it now.

6th straight win over UM and 8 of 9.

    Feels good man.

5 will beat 2 every time...Burke is good, very good, but I still want Craft as my PG

In a down season in terms of college point guards, I might just take Aaron Craft over all of them - due to defense, toughness, intangibles.
    lol--thanks!

Huge factor? How so? His points were very spread out. Only had 2 at half. Got a couple buckets late when game was in hand. On top of that, Craft forced him into 5 turnovers. 5 asst. 5 turnovers is not a stat line you want from PG position. Again, he had a nice game and I was impressed. But he never got on a roll or took over game. So I wouldn't call that a huge factor. Hardaway was the player that kept them in game for a while.

    Novak 33min 0 points 4 rebounds

    Thomas 35min 12 points 5 rebounds

yeah, Deshaun pretty much owned Novak today ;)

I couldn't be more please with Thomas on the season. He has really bought into his role and being a team player. He isn't forcing things, is rebounding and playing solid defense. And he has fun out on the court. He is a very tough matchup for other teams with his inside/outside game.

If Burke was on the team there would be issues. A total of three top notch Point Guards in back to back classes is problematic. It would only end up in one of them transferring. At the time Scott was offered he was much higher thought of than Burke.

SportsAndLady;1068460 wrote:I bet you Matta regrets not offering Burke now. You agree?
I bet not. Three top notch Point Guards in back to back classes on the same team could create issues. More than likely one would end up transferring anyway, not enough assists to go around. At the time Scott was offered he was much higher thought of than Burke.

I just don't understand the obsession w/ Aaron Craft. Good player, but I'd take quite a few players over him at the pg position.
It was Sullinger who had the obsession with Craft. He told Matta to offer Craft a scholarship. Sullinger played with Burke in HS and Craft in AAU ball, Sullinger wanted Craft. If you REALLY look at many of Craft's assists to Sullinger you would know why Sully wanted Craft. There isn't another PG in the county that can set up and deliver the ball right where Sullinger wants it when in the post. This year all of Craft's lob passes to Sully in the post when he's being fronted have been perfect. The most difficult entry pass for a PG, there is NO room for error.

Michigan's biggest short coming by far is rebounding. They're a soft team.
Second biggest shortcoming is Beilein's passive offense. They don't get to the foul line. They must make at least 50% of their 3-pointers to beat an Ohio State.
  • Big Gain
Not bad for a 5th option. If you double off him, if you don't block him out, he will make you pay.
  • Prescott
    Huge factor? How so?
He was responsible for 1/2 of his team's points. That makes him huge in the loss.
  • centralbucksfan
    Beilein quoted after the game:
"I was really impressed with OHIO today." said Beilein, using a name frequently used by Michigan football coach Brady Hoke that grates Ohio State fans. "Their defense was really suffocating at times".

Ha, funny guy. Real original. Maybe you should give some respect to a coach and program who have absolutely owned ur ass for about the past 8yrs!! I believe Matta is something like 15-2 vs UM. This was 6th straight win.

Prescott;1069467 wrote:He was responsible for 1/2 of his team's points. That makes him huge in the loss.
Sorry, when ur team only scores 49pts, I don't care how you spin it, not impressive or huge. I watched the game today, Burke had a "nice" game. Not huge by any means.

Either coaching, recruiting, whatever? Its always, "if it was good enough for him, its good enough for me." I dont get that. Why ever have an opinion if its just going to be because the coach did it.
VERY simple answer to a VERY simple question. Matta has FOUR Big Ten Championships in his 8 years at Ohio State. NO OTHER Big Ten coach has more than 2 since Matta has been in the Big Ten. Very difficult to put down the coach that is twice as successful as all of the other Big Ten head coaches.

Imo its time to start winning national titles, or at the very least consistent final four appearances.
