Programs in Need of a Coach

  • OSH
These programs have, or are rumored to have, a coaching vacancy:

    Illinois -- Zook fired
Arizona State -- Erickson fired, will coach bowl game
UCLA -- Neuheisel is gone reportedly
Akron -- Ianello is done; targeting Tressel
Kansas -- Turner Gill is done after 2 years
Arizona -- Stoops is gone; Rich Rod has been hired
Ohio State -- Fickell is done as HC, will reportedly stay on staff; Urban Meyer has been hired as HC
Memphis -- supposedly Larry Porter informed staff he is not returning
Washington State -- rumors are that HC Paul Wulff is gone
Florida Atlantic -- supposedly offered the job to Stoops
South Dakota -- needs a HC
UMass -- entire staff let go
Richmond -- interim first year coach did not get a contract

Add to it as this carousel goes around.

If Illinois can make a good hire, they have a chance to be a good team. They have some talent, as recruiting was never a problem with Zook, he just happened to be a terrible gameday coach.

I thought UMass has been pretty good lately. Im pretty sure they are joining the MAC in football next year, but could be wrong. Kind of surprising.

    Leach maybe?

You don't have Penn State on that list.

Ha! Good call. Don't know how I missed that one...

that guy at houston is going to get paid

I'm surpised Erickson and Neuheisel didn't work out better at A-State or UCLA. Regardless, Washington State should pursue both of them, and Mike Leach.

He's gotta get a job this year right?! I am surprised he hasn't found work yet.

    UAB let the coach go.

(I know it is UAB but sense you had Akron and Memphis on the list, I figured it was fair game).

North Carolina is technically an opening since the guy there is an interim coach. There are a lot of rumors that Guz Malzahn is the leader for that gig.
  • OSH
I thought UAB had an opening. Good addition.

UNC is one that I overlooked. Good addition. Man, Butch Davis really was dumb there.

Yes they're joining the MAC for football starting next season. I'm sure getting rid of their entire staff isn't how they envisioned joining FBS.

Remember when Charles Barkley was running his mouth about how Turner Gill should have been the head coach at Auburn and how Chizik was a terrible hire? Chizik won a national title. Gill now works at the Citgo. Good call Chuck.

Heard Washington State will look at him. If I am him, I dont take the Illinois job, too windy for his passing attack.

Yeah I like Chuck and all but his affirmative action approach to hiring is a damn joke.

I've listened to Leach a little bit on SiriusXM and the other day he seemed to be somewhat intrigued by the Ole Miss job.

The Ole Miss job is a shitty gig. Too hard to get in state recruits qualified for college. Leach might be able to land a spot there but he's a loose cannon, even for Ole Miss.

    ^^^^

I think that's why it'd be interesting to see him in the SEC... not too many others out there like him... Plus i think he'd be able to pull some talent out of Texas with the ties he has there...

Doesn't seem like he has been all that attractive himself. He has struggled to find any sort of job since he got canned. As Darby said, he might have an "in" with Texas kids over at Ole Miss.

Where does Tom Bradley end up when Penn State decides that have to go outside the program for their next coach? Illinois? Does he get a HC job? He has done a fantastic job with the defense for a long time. He was passed over for the Pitt job last year.

I wish the Kentucky job was on that list. There's a lot of fired coaches I would love to pick up this year.

Penn State will talk to Dan Mullen, Mark Richt, and Nick Saban supposedly.

    Interesting.

Can't really see him having much interest in it really.

Also saw on twitter that Kirby Smart will eventually take the Ole Miss job.
