Programs in Need of a Coach

So, Southern Miss now turns to Frank Wilson (LSU) and Ellis Johnson (South Carolina) for their vacancy -- there'll be others in the mix as well.

California policy says that Fresno State couldn't post their job for 14 days...it'll be a decent wait for that one.

Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain will probably be the new Memphis coach.

Danny Rocco, head coach at Liberty, has been named coach at Richmond.

John L. Smith has left Arkansas to become head coach at Weber State.

Arizona State's job keeps going round and round...June Jones in, June Jones out, NFL coaches in, NFL coaches out, June Jones...sheesh.

Speaking of June Jones, his old stomping grounds Hawaii needs a coach.

Notre Dame's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Charley Molnar will be named the next head coach at UMass.

Fordham's and Eastern Illinois' jobs are also open -- both FCS, I wish it'd go back to DI-AA, teams.

Penn State pays their coaches out of public funds??
  • Falcons53
It is all public funds in Pennsylvania. One of the news papers filed a suit againts Penn State for not disclosing and the judge ordered the release of the information. Based on the Commonwealth bylaws and the Land Grant University agreement, any money related to the school, whether earned, raised or donated is by law considered "public" money and therefore is covered under public information. So by that, even the money that Nike pays to the University is considered "public" and can be audited and disclosed to any resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania so long as the proper request is filed.

So yes, they are paid with public money.

Well no wonder they were just gonna let Paterno coach till he croaked. If people were pissed about 1 million dollars, they're gonna be in for a rude awakening when they see what coaches are making these days.

On a related note, it has been reported in the Cincinnati Enquirer that Cincinnati Head Coach Butch Jones will not be interviewing for any vacancies and is in discussions with the athletic department of securing a new contract.

June Jones and his people were negotiating a deal with Arizona State and then Arizona State supposedly just randomly pulled the offer with little to no explanation.

Saw something that said the backlash from the public was the reason. What the fuck is wrong with June Jones?

Didn't he drank and drive and wreck himself in Hawaii? Not sure that would be cause for the backlash though.

He had a wreck in Hawaii that nearly killed him, but I don't believe alcohol was involved. I'd say this is an example of ASU thinking they're more attractive than they are, and thinking they can get a bigger name. June Jones is a pretty good coach though.

I heard on ESPNRadio not long ago that Arizona State dropped their offer because "June Jones was taking too long in making the decision."

Apparently, they don't like you to think through things when leaving a position.

June Jones was one of the innovators of the run and shoot and spread offenses. He has ties to the NFL with his stints in Detroit and Atlanta. There is a reason that a guy with his pedigree has never had a job better than Hawaii or SMU. He has a very abrasive personality and has rubbed a lot of administrators and other college football coaches the wrong way. Some of his earlier teams in Hawaii took on the personality of their coach and played dirty (meaning a lot of personal fouls and cheap shots).

I think the dirt on June Jones is coming to light to the people at ASU and they are backing out.

Is there more than this guy reporting it? Not doubting it, just curious.

Didn't mean that it was going to happen. Just rumors that he interviewed. Sorry.

But I think the guy that runs that blog is usually pretty good.
  • mucalum49
Why apologize? I was just curious if that was the same source you saw or if it was gaining more traction elsewhere. Geesh.

Either way the twitter account cited in the link I posted is also saying Jim Mora Jr is gaining traction at UCLA and he's been reaching out to assistants about joining his staff.

Ha I wasn't saying it was a big deal at all, just wasn't clear on where I saw that originally. I also wasn't saying you were making a big deal out of it either. Just saying in my opinion that guy does a good job. Sorry for any confusion, no sarcasm intended at all.

    About June Jones

And things pop up on google search when you type in Jim Tressel UCLA. But, what is there to believe?

Toledo's Tim Beckman is a candidate at Illinois.

Jim Leavitt is a candidate at Kansas.

Penn State's position has NY Jet defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine Jr., in the mix.

Justin Fuente, who is quarterbacks and co-offensive coordinator at TCU, will be the coach at Memphis, apparently. The new offensive coordinator could be the other current co-offensive coordinator at TCU.

I said there were rumors of him interviewing. I'm not saying he has interest or will go there or anything of the sort. I also didn't say I had any sources at UCLA and that they have the money to spend. Try to keep up.

and yes in the post you quoted I didn't say he interviewed or it was rumors, I was on my phone and saw it on twitter. Thanks.

University of Toledo football coach Tim Beckman is the main target to fill the head coaching vacancy at Illinois, according to a Chicago Tribune report.
The Chicago Tribune cited multiple unnamed sources who said the Illini are "zeroing in on" Beckman.
Beckman was scheduled to meet with media after Thursday's practice at the Glass Bowl, but UT sent out an email shortly after noon stating that Beckman would not be available for interviews because he was heading "directly to a funeral in Columbus after practice." Visitation services for ex-Ohio State quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels are being held in a Columbus suburb Thursday afternoon, and Beckman said earlier this week he was planning to be in attendance.
Beckman did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Thursday afternoon.
