According to Joe's son Matt, who I just texted, Joe was the QB coach and Offensive Coordinator while at Pitt. He never coached running backs there. So yeah, he was Marino's coach. According to his bio on Coach Fickell's website he was running backs coach at Pitt in 1980-81, and QB coach and offensive coordinator from 1981-83, when Marino was the QB.
