OSU vacates 2010 wins

Unless the NCAA comes back with an amendment to their letter of allegations (possible) I don't see this as anywhere close to the situation USC found itself in, and I don't see further sanctions coming.
Typically, the NCAA goes by precedents when it hands out penalties, that's why OSU hired the firm it did when all this broke; a firm the NCAA respects and is used to working with in setting the parameters for penalties. I doubt they're going to throw all of that, and OSU's cooperation, under the bus because an OSU basketball coach couldn't mind his p's and q's nearly a decade ago. They're more likely to look at what happened now, how OSU reported it, how quickly they investigated, invited the NCAA to investigate, and responded.
Could I be wrong? Yep. And if the NCAA hammers OSU after it self-reported and cooperated as it did (as compared to how USC handled things) here's the message they send to every other NCAA school: may as well delay, be uncooperative and take your time because it won't make a damn bit of difference in what penalties you end up getting.
I doubt they want to send that message and make their job way more difficult than it already is.
You're throwing 'self-reported' and 'cooperated' a little loosely.
They 'self-reported' nearly a year after it happened. You can blame Tressel only and say that OSU was unaware of it, but it doesn't really matter. Tressel was part of OSU and part of his responsibilty is to act on the University's behalf when something happens. His failure to do so makes OSU just as guilty. The only time they 'self-reported' was when they knew that they were going to be found out, or had been found out, already.
Their 'cooperation' has consisted of solutions that are nothing more than middle fingers to the NCAA. They wanted nothing more than to just suspend Tressel for two games, then more, then finally forcing him to step down when they realized their punishment was a joke considering what had happened. They come up with some weak ass 10 day 'investigation' to help 'cooperate'. Hide correspondence between Tressel and Prior's mentor. Give themselves punishment that in no way would hurt their future (no scholly losses, no money returned from bowl game, no future bowl ban). As I said before, it's almost been like OSU has been daring the NCAA to stomp on their nuts since this whole thing broke in the spring. -
WriterbuckeyeYou have no idea what you're talking about.
Cooperation IS reporting violations AS SOON AS YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THEM, which is what the OSU administration did when they discovered Tressel had not been forthcoming about what he knew about players trading or selling merchandise. They can't report what isn't known.
As soon as they reported it, they invited the NCAA to be a part of the NCAA investigation and hired a company the NCAA is used to working with in trying to determine how the violations related to penalties (based on past precedents).
Compare that to what USC did: they ignored reports of Bush's violation for YEARS and did not go out of their way to invite the NCAA to investigate the matter until it was obvious all the information would be made public due to the court case Bush was involved in. Why do you think they ended up firing their athletic director during all this?
You can dislike the proposed penalties all you like...but they ARE based on similar cases in the past. The NCAA is not going to penalize OSU based on unproven allegations by media or hearsay comments by unnamed sources and criminals. They'll want at least some corroboration. There is none in about 99 percent of what the media has already decided OSU is guilty of doing.
As I noted: unless the NCAA amends the letter of allegations in the near future to include things like loss of institutional control (which was what USC was accused of) or failure to monitor, there's no reason for the penalties to exceed what has been done in similar past cases where a coach has lied.
Sounds to me like you're another one of those folks who just wants OSU hammered -- probably because you don't like how some OSU fans act or because your favorite team has been beaten by them, or some equally lame reason. -
Speedofsandpoor ole University of Ohio State is getting picked on by the media and everybody else all over the nation. Boohoo.

Nobody at OSU knew but JT....and the players involved....and all of their teammates....and more than likely their friends/girlfriends....and random workers at golf courses and restaurants that would call OSU to let them know. How many cases are there involving a coach who knowingly lied on NCAA disclosure forms, played ineligible players anyway, and a compliance department that was oblivious to all of the things happening?
My team has never played OSU, in my lifetime, so it has nothing to do with them beating up on my team. I just have concerns about getting slapped on the wrist for the things that have happened and not discouraging it from happening by other teams in the future.

sleeperWriter, you try to hard man. No logical argument will sway the haters from wanting the complete destruction of OSU football. You're 100% right, and the Buckeyes will be back in contention for CHAMPIONSHIPS as early as this fall, and the haters can't stand it.

You can bookmark the following comment:
There will be NO POST SEASON BANS, period. I could see losing 3-4 scholarships TOTAL, but nothing more.
Someone on ESPN said the talk is now that they will recieve a 2 year post-season ban(including the Big 10 Title Game) and the loss of 4-6 scholarships for 2 years in addition to what they self imposed -

You are more than naive if you think "someone on ESPN" knows what additional sanctions (if any) OSU will get. They are still a month away from going before the Committee on Infractions and another month or two away from the NCAA making any ruling. There is zero chance any talking head at ESPN currently has a clue as to what the NCAA will rule. -
Ty WebbConsidering the guy blogs about the Big 10 and has talked with people who have detailed knowledge on the OSU investigation...yea I believe him and that is the general consensus among un-biased people i've talked to

Oh, "someone on ESPN", LOL.
Hey, how's Florida doing? Are any of their players out of jail? Or have they played in a national televised bowl game since Tebow left? Must suck to root for a program that's only a flash in the pan. -

This is being overlooked. You hammer OSU, and I guarantee schools stop self reporting and start using the SEC model of covering everything up(Auburn, Bama, Florida, LSU, etc..)Could I be wrong? Yep. And if the NCAA hammers OSU after it self-reported and cooperated as it did (as compared to how USC handled things) here's the message they send to every other NCAA school: may as well delay, be uncooperative and take your time because it won't make a damn bit of difference in what penalties you end up getting.

sleeperPlus to add to the post above, I could see the NCAA saying something along the lines of "Normally these infractions would result in a 20 year bowl ban and 85 scholarships lost, but since OSU is a self reporting school and their students excel in the classroom, we're going to accept their self imposed penalties."
Boom, suck on that haters. -
sportchamppsAs an osu fan and a sports fan in general I can guarentee osu will get a bowl ban. I think only losing 4 to 6 scholys might be a little light as well

Who cares that you're an OSU or a sports fan, OSU hired a consultant to review the appropriate punishment, I'll take them over your lack of knowledge any day. -
Pick6the_system;825347 wrote: Dez Bryant was suspended for an entire season for doing something that was found not to even be an infraction later. OSU's players DID do things that are an infraction and are only suspended 5 games.
Pretty sure Dez lied to the NCAA as well.
I think how many players USC had is irrelevant. Reggie Bush's improper benefits far succeed lying to the NCAA and selling some gifts. -

The NCAA standard is when information becomes known by the folks who report to the NCAA...not by who on the team knew or someone in the public MIGHT have known. When did compliance people find out -- and how quickly did they report it.
OSU reported it immediately and invited the NCAA in to participate in their investigation. That's what's meant by cooperating.
Keep splitting hairs if you like...but it doesn't change the facts. -

Yeah, says the Michigan fan who's sick of getting PUMMELED by Ohio State. Let me repeat, OSU hired a consultant and aligns perfectly with my opinion. Do you know what a consultant is?
