The SI article about Tressel

  • OhioStatePride2003
The article is trash. Nothing new came out of this. I don't get why this article had to come out for Pryor to be 'further investigated'. The article has a bunch of statements and comments from a bunch of convicted criminals. I also find it funny that players like Ray Small and Robert Rose are the ones doing all the talking. Any player that was worth a damn at OSU hasn't said a word about selling anything. Small was constantly in JT's dog house, and Rose spent some time there as well. Neither's talents came to fruition during their time at OSU.

Look, the media won. There are a lot of people who want to see OSU crippled because of all of this. Personally, if the university is in 'damage control' now, get rid of the 'Tat-5'. Fickell owes them nothing. The university owes them nothing, and we as fans, certainly don't owe them anything. We're gonna get hit, and we're gonna get hard. USC hard? I dunno. I don't think it'd be fair if so. The two situations are completely different. The media is never going to be happy. Tressel resigns, and they've already moved onto 'Pryor being investigated.' This will pass, it will take some time, but it will all pass. I would be shocked if anything came out of this SI article. There isn't anything new, and unless there's a paper trail, the NCAA isn't going to get involved with a bunch of convicted criminals.

Sad day to be a Buckeye and I hate to see Tress leave on these terms. HIS legacy may be tarnished, but a lot of people said Woody's would be too, and he is one of the most beloved people at Ohio State two decades after he died. Regardless of what happens, I'm a Buckeye. I'll always be a Buckeye. Anyone who isn't a Buckeye, just doesn't get it. We'll rebound, we'll win again, and we'll surely be back at the center of 'controversy' again somewhere down the road. There isn't a clean program in the nation. You're talking about a business where the coach's are making seven figures and student athletes have the upper hand with the whole 'pay to play' matter.

The media loves this. Michigan fans love this. Hell, I bet even the Auburn faithful are glad that the spotlight has been taken off of their whole fiasco right now. Let them bask in their glory, because if Ohio State hadn't spent the last ten years kicking their asses, then they wouldn't have anything to say now. They're trying to make up for a decade of ass beatings by using words to blast OSU all over the internet and newspapers. It's done on the field - beating your rival nine out of ten, winning Big Ten titles, playing in National Championship games, and winning 106 games in 10 years - is getting it done on the field. "Cheating" or not, that's hard to do, and until they (media and opposing teams) shut us up on the field - we ultimately get the last laugh.

I wouldn't want to play this year's team, no way. All in all, I'm still a Buckeye - Vest or No Vest - Go Bucks!

You obviously know nothing about OSU football or you wouldn't even question the lack of credibility of Rose as a source.

    Not JT's doing.

I still don't get what this article brought to the table. Just because the players broke rules doesn't affect the program unless they knew about it. So the "Tat-5" they knew about has gotten them in trouble, but just because the other shit happened doesn't mean the school could/should have known about it. If OSU gets hit as hard as USC it is B/S. And it is also B/S that there is so much media coverage of this when it isn't nearly as big.

If you took any major program, you'd probably discover that 28 players over the course of 8 seasons traded or sold memorabilia

I'll say this as vaguely as possible. Rife has a close connection to a football booster and who is on the Athletic Association's Advisory Committee. I'm not saying there is more to the story, but this booster certainly would have known Rife was buddies with these players. I just do not believe Tressel was unaware of this arrangement at the tattoo parlor.

I have to agree, this article was lame for all the build up. There are only a few things that could affect the Buckeyes.

    - 9 current players trading memorabilia
    - 9 other players with the last 4 years trading for memorabilia
    - Marting and the car thing

But really, this article was nothing like all the rumors we heard about what it was. I personally think the "new" investigation of TP and the cars could be bigger than this.

So I wonder...did OSU force Tress out because of the negative media/press, with this being the final straw? Or was there another reason?

There definitely is a lot of ink on current CFB rosters.

There's a lot of ink on any roster. Can't remember the team, might have been KU (basketball) but their entire team was inked.

This article was over-hyped and it's ridiculous how much credit SI is taking for Tressel resigning.

The trustee's and Les Wexner gave him the vote of no confidence over the weekend and once that happened, it was a matter of time.

I would agree Tressel PROBABLY knew, but proving it will be nearly impossible I would think.

Nothing in the article added any new information. More players might have been involved in selling trinkets- no kidding, that was obvious from day one, but the NCAA requires actual proof. College Football Players smoke pot- Holy Fucking Christ that's a revelation...

Nothing mentioned anything else that the coaching staff or compliance department screwed up on, and most of the stuff in the article it the He Said She said type. You'd have to be a fucking retard to think this article opened the door for more NCAA punishments:

For NCAA purposes, the key to the consequences will be how much was disclosed during the return visits early in 2011. If tOSU was honest with them about what they knew or suspected AT THAT TIME, this may be just a case of the media catching up to the situation.

However, I don't see Ohio State getting out of this without
    - vacating the 2011 regular season
    - a one-year bowl suspension
    - a 10-scholarship reduction for at least a year.

"In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."

Reporters/writers who follow OSU are tweeting that Storm Klein doesn't even have one tattoo.

Agree and disagree. Smith said in December it was an isolated incident and only the 6 players who were suspended were involved and said he was relieved that there were no other violations. If 9 additional current players participated, as well as 9 other recent players, it either shows the compliance department/Smith didn't do a good job of investigating or they hoped it would blow over. 28 people is not an isolated occurrence.

Well to be fair to the article, it said those players traded memorabilia for ink OR money.

Over an 8 year span? Not really as bad as you're making it sound.

Oh, thats right. "Ellis" said that, although not specifying who traded what.

18 in the last 4 though, and that could be bad.

Tressel has lied to them on 3 separate occasions about this, the NCAA will likely conclude that Tressel knew about this for years. This all makes it a systemic problem, which by definition is a lack of institutional control.
