How Much Trouble Is OSU and Tressel in Now?!

He was contacted by an attorney who will probably be disbarred or reprimanded about an on going federal investigation and given details about the case. He should have outed the attorney told the feds and NCAA and blew the whole thing up. He didn't, was more concerned about the players being in trouble. At then end of the investigation its turns out they just sold shit the the tattoo parlor and committed no crimes. Tressel was put in a tough situation. I'm not sure what I would have done. Read the OSU statement to the NCAA before you post anymore shit on this forum.

I would think that the lawyer will face reprimand of some sort. He shouldn't have even been mentioning anything to Tressel, if that was the case. Either the attorney committed some ethical violations or Tressel's story isn't 100%. -
dwccrewytownfootball;704133 wrote:Because if Tressel tipped that these guys were in trouble prior to them being released of any drug business, it could have tipped off tattoo guy and fucked their case.
This has nothing to do with the post you quoted of mine. I am asking why the attorney would send an e-mail to Tressel about an ongoing investigation that had nothing to do with Tressel, just his players. In the eyes of the law, Tressel is of no concern in this case.
Tressel only knew about it because of the attorney, so how could he have tipped anyone off had the lawyer not informed him? -
killer_ewokcentralbucksfan;704122 wrote:Not in my eyes. If he was taking a hit for the players, I have no issue with that. IF what was mentioned in presser is true. Personally, i am relieved it wasn't something like recruiting violations, booster dealings, academic wrong doing, etc, etc. No, its not good. But it could have been worse..and I was expecting the worst. Again, not making an excuse. But there were certainly some complexities involved with a federal investigation, a lawyer asking for confidentiality and possible risk to his players. I am sure it will all play out in the next few days when details emerge.
As of right now, Tressel's character just took a hit outside of the OSU fan base. I think there's a good possibility that's the case as of right now. If further info comes out stating that Tressel had no choice other than to keep it under wraps.....that will surely change. I'm sure most of the OSU fan base will give him the benefit of the doubt right now and if I was a Buckeye fan I would too.

sonofsamTressel said he is sorry to all who he offended and that he will grow from this... Maybe he should teach his players how to finish games and keep pouring it on when they need to and learn from that...
I am a die-hard Buckeye fan, but the more and more I think about it Tressel has on more than one occasion sneeked by on John Cooper's talent and luck many times. I don't buy into his philosophy that he respects teams enough to not hang it on them if he is willing to cheat. Right now to me he is a "numbers" guy... Maybe this will wake him up and learn to put it to a team when he should and win that second National Championship so he can get Cooper's shadow off his back. -

It has everything to do with it. Attorney tells him your guys are selling shit but we have an active investigation with him regarding tax evasion and drugs, you can't say shit because if you do you could alert tattoo guy to our ACTIVE (not complete) investigation...Tattoo guy goes out back, burns his shit and books a flight to Panama...fucking the feds case against him. -

Tressel's charachter took a hit with me as well... Either play the "saint" or play the game. Its time he quits with the feathers and brings the hammer. -

Uhhh, 05 and beyond are all Tressel teams and they have been VERY successful, outside of winning a second title. He has produced on the field. I do agree that he should pour it on, but that really has nothing to do with his results. -

Get Cooper's shadow off his back? I think his bowl record and Michigan record dispel that sort of nonsense. -

Again, if the attorney doesn't inform Tressel of his players selling shit, then Tressel doesn't know about it. How are you failing to see that? He couldn't have tipped anyone off, he wouldn't know. The attorney should NOT have said anything to Tressel, that is an ethics violation. -

Not being snarky, honest question - why should a tOSU fan care about the opinion of the fans of other programs? Why should the fans of any program? -

Seems like you already had an issue with Tressel and you are just looking for information to fulfill your preconceived notions. It's a classic example of confirmatory bias. -

Actually, you also answered my question directly above your post. Thanks! -
elbuckeye28queencitybuckeye;704151 wrote:Not being snarky, honest question - why should a tOSU fan care about the opinion of the fans of other programs? Why should the fans of any program?
Exactly. Most fanbases outside of their own have/had negative perceptions of Saban, Meyer, Carroll, Bowden, and Stoops. About the only coach that seems to avoid these perceptions is Paterno, and I think much of that has to deal with his age. -
sonofsamelbuckeye28;704148 wrote:Get Cooper's shadow off his back? I think his bowl record and Michigan record dispel that sort of nonsense.
Does it? Tressel is the coach that beats Michigan because he plays that game to win... Imagine if he played every OTHER game the same way... Tressel's bow record is pretty good, but he chokes in national championship games much like Cooper did against Michigan, except when he had Cooper's players. -

It was most likely already out there that it was an issue. Guys have been getting tats there for a long time as you recall. -

That's a great question. Why should you? I certainly didn't imply that you should. Just stating my opinion. -

Yes, but as a fan of another program, your opinion likely did not and would not have changed regardless of what was stated in the presser. -

The only issue I have with Tressel is that he cannot finish the big games... He is an excellent coach and I do not wish for a coaching change, I just hope that he learns not to take his foot off the gas during the regular season and treats national championships like its a michigan game. -
Cleveland BuckFirst of all, if the email was from a U.S. attorney requesting confidentiality, then while Tressel should have talked to the legal team at OSU, it is much more understandable that he would think it best to keep it to himself for the time being. If it was the defense or some other attorney, then he really shouldn't have had second thoughts about talking to someone.
Second, while I can't find the emails anywhere, I read the report sent to the NCAA. This was their summary of the emails:
The e-mails discovered by the University indicated that the attorney initially e-mailed Coach Tressel on April 2, 2010, with information pertaining to football student-athletes' alleged visits to a local tattoo parlor. The email also indicated that the owner of the parlor possessed Ohio State football memorabilia, that one specific student-athlete may have been given free or reduced tattoo services, and that the owner of the parlor had a criminal background and was the subject of a criminal investigation. Coach Tressel replied, "I will get on it ASAP" in an email response om the same day.
The attorney e-mailed Coach Tressel again on April 16, 2010 with additional information, including that two student-athletes were selling their Championship rings. Coach Tressel e-mailed a reply of "keep me posted as to what I need to do, if anything."
Finally, on June 1, Coach Tressel initiated an e-mail to the attorney asking if the attorney had any additional names of football student-athletes involved in these activities. The attorney replied the same day that he did not have additional names. On June 6, Coach Tressel thanked the attorney for his response. No other e-mail correspondence between the attorney and Coach Tressel (or the attorney and any other football coaching staff member and other football administrative staff members) was discovered by the institution. -

Regardless, the attorney was doling out priveleged information to a party that was not involved in the case. Ethics violation. And if it was already out there, why would he feel the need to inform just Tressel? Why not the AD or anyone else at the school? Why not family members of the players?
I agree with you that it was most likely already out there, the point I am making is that no matter if it was or not, this attonrey is not allowed to give Tressel fair warning. -

Think of the negative reaction people had to Kelly during the video incident this season. Although he probably could have prevented it, many were forming wild conclusions and blaming him, probably because he is the coach of ND. We usually perceive a situation the fits into our own worldview. I hear all the time from Michigan fans that Musberger is a closet Ohio State fan, then I hear the exact opposite from my fellow Ohio State fans. -
ICEMAN59Two Huge Questions/Flaws with Tressel's Statements Today:
1) Why did he lie to OSU officials in December when school officials were first alerted to the Tat 5 situation? Gene Smith admitted that they interviewed Tress at that time (in December), yet Smith also stated they were not aware of Tressel's knowledge of the situation until being tipped off this January after the Bowl win . . . a full month later.
2) Why did Tress apparently forward the email to someone else . . . . despite his apparent overwhelming concern with confidentiality? Heck, if you're so concerned about confidentiality, but you're still going to share it with someone, that someone is obviously going to be an OSU official (head legal counsel for the school, AD or President) . . . not someone else.
He's been a coach a long time, he knew better and knew who to report it to. His primary concern is upholding the integrity of the program, not taking a self-imposed oath of confidentiality.
And the line from Gee about being worried about Tress firing him . . . . obviously it was a joke, but it's pretty telling nonetheless.
As an OSU fan, this stinks . . . bad.
