Ohio State 2011 Off-Season Discussion

2012 CB Tyvis Powell is expected to commit on Friday. He is a 6'4" 190lb CB from Bedford who also plays QB.

Edit: To be clear, OSU is offering him as a CB.

Was just about to post this. He will probably end up being a safety (he plays in HS) but he wants to be a CB. If he can do it that would be amazing. I think he officially set his date for June 3rd, but he is pretty much a lock.

Curious to see how Tressel resigning will affect recruiting....

I'd think it will be negative until all of the sanctions are known. I saw a tweet from one of the Rivals guys(I think) today and he said he had talked to 8 or 9 recruits with OSU offers and he said the majority of them were completely done with OSU. I think once everything is known, in state recruiting will still be pretty solid for OSU. The program will bounce back as soon as its possible from any sanctions.

Bedford (Ohio) cornerback Tyvis Powell, one of the top players at his position in the state, has a press conference set for Wednesday.

"I'm still making my announcement on Wednesday," Powell told Rivals.com. "Nothing has changed at all."

After offering Powell a week ago, he quickly planned an announcement ceremony at his school leading everyone to believe that his dream offer had come in. Despite saying that he will choose between the Buckeyes, West Virginia and Michigan State, it appears OSU is a near lock for his commitment and he makes no bones about it.

"It is very unfortunate for coach Tressel but it doesn't affect my decision at all," said Powell of the news. "I didn't hear anything about the business school going down or falling apart and college is college, you go for an education and to play football. Ohio State is Ohio State and it always will be no matter who is wearing the headphones. I want to send a message to everyone that I'm still on board and everyone else should be as well."
Looks like we will add one to the class tomorrow!

    Great article.

LOVE Tyvis Powell's comments. THIS is the type of kid OSU needs to recruit - not Pryor, Small, etc.

The second Tressel announced his resignation I said one of the important people in the Buckeyes program right now is Michael Brewster. He has been recruiting for the Buckeyes since his senior year in high school, and I think him and some of the other senior leaders can help us as much as they can in convincing recruits everything will be fine. The Buckeyes senior leadership this year will go a long way in determining the course of the future IMO.

Recruiting will be a main reason why I think OSU won't go for Fickell or another low guy like they did with Tressel.

If I were OSU, I'd want a coach who has solidified himself in the recruiting trail. Urban Meyer is my top choice.

Luke Fickell and recruiters everywhere would LOL at that statement. Fickell has proved time and time again he is the best recruter next to Tressel on the team. I think he would do a fine job there, obviously he wouldn't have the star power of a Urban Meyer but Urban didn't have that star power at one time either. Give the kid a chance.

If I were a recruit I would think twice about coming to OSU now. Not only will you be playing for a different coach next year, you will probably be playing for another coach the year after.

I don't particularly want Urban Meyer. (But I didn't want Tressel either, so what do I know.)

Kyle Kalis was ready to decommit from OSU and go elsewhere. After a 56 minute phone conversation with Fickell, he decided to remain a Buckeye. Fickell is one of the best recruiters in the country, and 100% Buckeye. I really hope Fickell has a good year and they give him the job, but I do want him to prove he can coach on gameday, we'll see!!

+1 Fickell can get it done. We all know he can get it done on defense on the field, I just hope he can get it done on Offense too.

I think that's the major concern next year. I would feel much better if Hazell was still on staff, even though he would probably be the interim head coach. I don't think the defense skips a beat. If I remember correctly, Tressel had very little, if any at all, to do with the defense.

I would assume Bollman will be calling plays.

I would not assume that. I expect Dick Tressel or Stan Drayton to call plays. Also since Tressel is gone can hire another assistant. Not sure if they go offense or defense. Glen Mason is available...

Unless Fickell demotes him, Bollman is the offensive coordinator. What makes you think he won't be calling the plays when the season starts? Of course he will.
  • Pariah
I've been loving the buckeyes for a while. The 68 season is the first I remember (I was 4). I don't think there has ever been a season with the challenges the 2011 team will face. Losing Tress, Fickell as interim, sanctions looming, Pryor staying or going, starting the season with one offense and getting a new one in game 6, etc. It will be really interesting to see whether they come together or collapse. The biggest thing is that the odds of them playing in the inaugural B10 championship game and a bowl game are slim to none. And it's possible they won't be eligible in 2012 either.

Jim B will be calling the plays? Wow. Won't that be exciting.

Because he has never been the sole play caller at OSU? Of course, what I could see is Fickell making a Tressel type system with Bollman being the final say, but having the offensive staff submit plays to him during the game. Tressel had multiple guys give him plays each down and he would then select from that or make his own call.

I agree with this. Bollman has never done anything with the passing game at tOSU. Before Joe Daniels left he would recommend pass plays to Tress. Now, I'm not saying that Bollman knows nothing about the passing game but I would imagine there would be somebody else adding insight to the passing game.

DB 5'11" 171lbs Najee Murray from Stubenville begins OSU's ninth commit tonight. He was the defensive MVP at OSU's football camp this weekend and accepted the offer on the spot.

Good stuff. Love camp offers and love kids who can pull the trigger that quick.

For those following recruiting, Kyle Dodson's ACT score came in and he finally picked up his OSU offer. Hopefully, OSU can secure a commitment.
  • karen lotz
Suppose this is the best place to put it... Fickell will have his first press conference as HC today. ESPNU will carry it at 4.

This is huge. He is a must get.

Dodson is going to announce his decision in the next couple of days. Looking good for OSU.
