Urban Meyer steps down at head coach at Florida

  kiss my ass tiernan. Urban is staying on in a new job at UF. His son is 12 and Meyer will be close to his family for as long as it takes for him to feel good enough to work again as coach at his level.

  A little inside scoop, fwiw. Most of you know Meyer's wife is from Chillicothe, and of course her family is still here. I was at the Barber Shop this morning, and we were talking about Urban Meyer. About that time, Urban's wife's cousin, who is a coach in the area, came in. According to the family, this decision was 100% family related. His health issues(anxiety disorder), are being well controlled by meds, so that wasn't why he left. He also said he couldn't imagine Urban taking more than a year or two away from the game. When we left, we went out to the guys truck, and he showed us a package he received from Urban that had Florida practice film(just drills and stuff) and conditioning programs.

  The thing is that it could be anyone. Florida is a top 5 job (maybe even higher), so they could go after anyone they want and probably at least make a pitch to them.
  
  I think Petersen just makes too much sense for him to not get the first look.

  I don't think Florida has risen to the level of a top 5 or higher job yet, top 10 maybe.My top 10 college football jobs in no particular order Notre Dame, USC, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas maybe either Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, as the tenth team. All but Florida have been traditional powers for years (with a few down years) Florida is more a newcomer to being a college football power but it's rich recruiting base does make it an attractive job.

  How can you say Notre Dame would be a better hire than Florida? Notre Dame hasn't won anything since the 80's...and right now Florida gets just about any recruits they want and has a great state to recruit out of...I would say the top 10 coaching jobs in college football to have now in no particular order are: Ohio St, USC, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Miami (FL), and LSU.

  Heard from a guy who knows another guy that coaches Urbans kid in pee-wee football the kid is a panzy. So he maybe wanting to work with the kid.

  If notre dame were any good or won a NC the recruits would be pouring in. They recruit as good as anyone as it is. I would say the top ten are... Ohio St, USC, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, LSU, Penn State.
  
  Also a top 10 is hard to put together because depending on who the coach is and where they are from obviously, if you told them they could coach at any NCAA school in america who knows where and why they would pick the school.

  Winning or not, it has a lot to do with how the school is going to support a coach - pay, resources, facilities, etc. all have a part in it. Just because some guys have failed at a particular school, doesn't mean it wouldn't be an attractive job for high profile candidates.
  
  After being out there during the season, I'd say their coach isn't going anywhere for a long time, but Oregon is a pretty good job at the moment - up there with any of the traditional powers.

  I would say Notre Dame moreso for their rich history than anything else, though their support has always been good. Oregon is literally buying their right of passage with facilities and money being poured into the program

  I would probably say that the wins and notoriety came before the money in most cases, certainly not with all I'm sure. This situation with Oregon seems so much different to me. Maybe it's because I wasn't around at the time the "traditionals" were building their programs, I don't know. But in Oregon's case, particularly their association with Nike, arguably the largest supplier of gear to most programs, gives them also an association with very highly skilled marketing, with a readily accessible audience. The willingness to spend is also unlimited seemingly. The combination of cash and marketing, particularly the revenue source being Nike is something that's never been seen before, and will succeed sooner probably rather than later.

  I think Florida is obviously a better job than Notre Dame at this point. The weather, regional talent, lower academic standards, and its conference affiliation all make it a better job than Notre Dame. Notre Dame is still a good job and is definitely still a destination job, but I am with oz on this one.

  rumor is Petrino just signed a 7 year extension at Arkansas.
  Stoops has been thinking about it, Peterson is 1a on the list.

  Stoops or Peterson are not bums. I'm digging the thought of Stoops, with Kerwin Bell. Meyer will have an office when he wants to get out of the house. I can't wait til we start flipping recruits to Gainesville.

  Haven't heard anything on here about Pellini interviewing for the job but did hear he spoke with officials and that Osborne did not give him permission to do so, that's the extent of it thus far though.

  Can't believe Stoops is in the mix. Its a latteral move for him. Not much to gain by doing so except for the shit he would take from Okl fans. So I am not buying into the Stoops stuff. I also believe Mullen is at the top of the list. Strong I am not so sure about.
  And I don' think there is any quesiton that Fla is a top 5/10 job. Established program, with talent, and recruiting hot bed. And please don't compare Fla to ND...right now, its not even close.

  an hour after my post it was on ESPN. Trust me Ty, I have better info than you when it comes to Gator football. I want Charlie but the powers that be want more experience and offensive thinking. Mullen has all but been crossed off Foley's list. Petrino was behind Meyer 6 years ago and was on Foley's short list again. Fanbase already hates Petrino (not as a coach) and he knows it, Ark. wanted to keep him. Good. Stoops is thinking if TxAM leaves,(SEC) the Big12 is close falling apart. He can recruit easier and his wife can get a sexy tan in Florida. Golf, fishing, the beach vs freezing. No state income tax. Stoops has an offer, hope to know by Monday. Peterson is next, then Harbaugh, Whittingham. Mullen is waiting on a chance to go to PSU, but used Miami and UF to gauge his value. Gruden declined, but I've been a big fan of his. I watched Jay play and coach in Arenaball, and coach in the UFL. He is a great offensive coach. He worked with QBs and WRs in Tampa when Jon won the Super Bowl.
  What is your problem with Stoops ? That he said yes then no after Spurrier left ? Okla gave him 3million under the table, that was a lot of money back then. Check the OU boards out, they are talking UF / Stoops.

  My problem with Bob Stoops is that he is an over-rated coach who has won 1 big game in his career...he will tear down everything that Urban Meyer has built.

  yeah, they posted it as soon as they read about it on a Gator site. Actually he texted he is out recruiting today. He is not in negotiations, he is mulling it over. I think its 50/50 he will be a Gator again. Peterson will accept if offered. Probably have to wait until Monday.
