Urban Meyer steps down at head coach at Florida

No way UF hires R Rod, I would not worry at all about that. Man that would put me right over the edge.

I wouldn't count Urban Favre out just yet.

I love to hate him because he beat my beloved Buckeyes so yes there is bias in my statement. Before that heck no, how could any team not want him!! Now of course I have no say in OSU hiring process so if one day he would ever become the coach there no way would I not be a fan of the Buckeyes and I wouldn't root for him to fail either!

    Enigmaax,

Gotta think about it this way about Peterson. Where was Urban Meyer at before Florida? Winning BCS games as a non-AQ at Utah. It would be a similar situation in that regard.

That being said, I think Peterson takes a long hard look at the Florida job. If TCU and Utah had remained in the MWC, I could have seen Peterson staying as Boise, TCU, and Utah might have been enough to vault that conference into AQ status. However, Boise is in the same position they're in now and are going to have a tough time making it into the BCS title game.

I would also want to consider Mullen. He's more of an offensive minded coach than Charlie Strong, and while defense is important in the SEC, you need to have a creative offense to win ballgames, and I just don't see that in Strong. Mullen, IMO, has done a good job with the limited talent at MSU.

I really believe Meyer possesses a little more integrity than that, could be wrong, of course, but my gut says he does.

Joe Schad just reported on ESPN that Dan Mullen will most likely be the new HC by Friday

Why? He did the same thing last year!! Now I doubt he will come back to Florida now but he will coach again!

“I have been a Division I football coach for the last 25 years and, during that time, my primary focus has been helping my teams win titles,” Meyer said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one.

“But after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I’ve been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been.”

    His statement

Exactly what I expected him to say.

I don't see it taking. He might stay away for a couple of years, but he'll be back.

I don't doubt he'll coach again, though I doubt it will be for another year minimum. I do believe there are health issues involved, just like last season, though I think he was talked out of just leaving by the administration to save some recruits etc...

I could be wrong, but I feel as though he's known he was stepping down after this season since last season ended.

Sounds pretty right to me. His health issues were just too much to overcome.

He's financially set, won 2 national championships, brought a program back from the depths of Zook, and now gets to enjoy time with his family without having to worry about work at the age of 46. Seems to me like he made the right call.

Mr.SEC.com is reporting that Dan Mullen has already been offered the job

Mullen is getting the first call. Manny Diaz may not come with him, he could fill Mullen's job. Should know by Friday. UF has a bunch of recruits coming this weekend.

Take a couple of years off and return to coaching when Tressel retires in a few years. Would be the perfect scenario for me.

If I had to watch a former player of mine light it up, have a Heisman-type season, and lead his team to a national championship, while my program went 7-5, lost to Miss St. and got drilled by a revived in-state rival (FSU), I would have health problems too. I could see him taking a year or two off and then coming back to another job.

    Couple of rumors flying around:

Jeremy Foley is on a plane to Starksville

Mullen's wife is in Gainsville looking at houses

I believe it when it happens.......

I'm just not a fan of him personally. The discipline problems at Florida are well documented. I know things happen at every school, but I'm pretty sure that if DeVier Posey was caught in a parking lot firing an AK47, he wouldn't be playing at OSU anymore. He just seems like a guy that thinks he is the most important person in the room, no matter where he goes. There's no doubt he's a very good coach, and maybe I'm just spoiled by Tress, but I don't want to see him on the home side in the Horseshoe.

The below video shows why I don't care for Urban Meyer.

I don't necessarily think bringing a program back from "the depths of Zook" would be all that tough. Zook is a hell of a recruiter, he just can't coach a lick. The players were there when Meyer got there, so half the battle was already taken care of.

Does anyone have a insider pass? Rumblings now about Petrino from insiders. That would be funny.

The oc from auburn??? I think he could make that offence nasty

Because he is sticking up for one of his players?

The guy is tired and wants a break IMO. Lots of coaches have done this is the past. The guy has money and will be able to coach almost anywhere in football when and if he decides to return to the game.

    I feel sorry for Penn State--they don't stand a chance :(
