The Coaches First Team Defense would never get scored on if that was a starting 11.
  • krambman
I can't believe Clay was the only Wisconsin RB that made the coach's list.

I also always find it interesting how different some of the picks can be, like Denard Robinson being first team by the media but not being on the coach's list, or Herron being voted first team by the coach's but not making the media list.
  • karen lotz
Or how about Robinson being Offensive Player of the Year by both coaches and media but not being listed on either of the Coaches teams??

Edit: unless of course that means the coaches and media votes are counted together for POY awards.

Yet again Jim Tressel shut out as coach of the year. I don't believe he's ever won the award since coming to Ohio State and has a NC and a ton of B10 titles...
  • karen lotz
I think Dantonio earned it this year. OSU was expected to be there and preseason #2. What was Sparty picked to finish in Big Ten? Oh yeah, he also had a heart attack during the season.

Coach of the Year is about who was the "biggest news story." They were talking about it on the Fan today(I think it was Common Man and the Torg). One of them said Dantonio would win it because of the heart attack, while the other one was saying Bielema should win it.

And they also said that coaches should be held to the same standard as players when it comes to missing games.

That's a little odd, but not out of the question. He clearly was the most outstanding offensive player in the Big Ten this year, but in many ways he was more running back than quarterback. I can understand how some of the coaches considered him to be the best offensive player but on the best quarterback.

Correct, he's won seven Big Ten titles in 10 years and he's never been Big Ten Coach of the Year. In 2002 he swept the national COY awards but didn't win Big Ten COY (Kirk Ferentz who had Iowa 8-0 in conference and 10-1 overall won). He won several national COY awards in 2006 and again didn't win Big Ten COY. Kirk Ferentz (whose team clearly quit this weekend) on the other hand has been named Big Ten COY three times, and Tressel is 7-1 against him.

This year I have no problem with Dantonio being named COY over Tressel because of what he did with that team while the Buckeyes were preseason #2 and picked to win the conference but finished in a three way tie. It is almost unconscionable that Tressel has never won it though.

    I understand both your points...however

Isn't part of "being there" a function of coaching/recruiting after all? So JT gets penalized for being there consistently?

I don't begrudge either D'antonio or Bielema, they did very well, and I'm not saying JT should have won it this year, I just think he should have had one by now. There really is no excuse.

Oh I agree 100% with you.

The recruiting aspect would come into play if it were a Coach of the Decade type award, which I'm sure there is somewhere. Tressel would no doubt win that for the Big Ten. Coach of the Year awards tend to go to coaches who coach their teams up and greatly exceed preseason expectations.

glad to see Hines on there, he has had a good last month of the season.

Rolle is first team on both.

And I would like to see the voting for DPOY. IMO, JJ Watt is the best defensive player in the B10, if not the country.
  • karen lotz
Or hell, since the COY award is voted on by just the media, maybe its their way of sticking it to him for not giving them any good sound bytes over the years?

What's your point? He isn't on either of the second teams...

Lol...comprehension isn't a high priority for teachers these days.

This is why he's never won it. It's kind of like how the Heisman isn't really for the most outstanding player, but rather the best player on the best team. The COY isn't really for the best coach, it's for the coach who got his team to overachieve or exceed expectations. When your team is picked to win the conference every year it's hard to overachieve and exceed expectations (and even though they did that in 2002 I guess the media decided that Iowa going undefeated in conference was more impressive).

Glad to see Chekwa getting his due. Its unfortunate that he always seems to be the scapegoat for Buckeye fans.
  • Writerbuckeye
Six titles in a row -- which is a record only matched by Woody Hayes, and he can't get Coach of the Year.

Do these folks understand how incredibly STUPID they look for having never given Tressel this award?

They probably do, but don't care.

Pryor's response to Big Ten awards:
Damn I must be the worst Qb/ player. I might quit football.
  • LJ
    lol@ Pryor's comments.
  • krambman
Yeah, I was just going to post Pryor's tweet. When he does something good he's not afraid to tell you about it and when he feels like he's been snubbed or unfairly analyzed he'll let you know about that too.
  • Pick6
I figure he posted that because people were giving him shit for not making 1st or 2nd team?
  • karen lotz
Yeah either that or he just said it in response to the snub of not getting selected to any of the teams.
