Cam Newton and father admitted in phone conversations that money would determine coll

This is what Cam's father said last night when asked about the latest pay-to-play story:
I'm not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place. I've answered what I need to answer. If they're out there, go with it and make the decision or determination based on whatever you've got to say. -
vball10setwatching Cam's presser when he said he "wasn't going to address these non-issues" and didn't deny the allegations reminded me a lot of Mark McGwire at the senate hearings...avoid the question and hope it goes away

j_crazythis is starting to get juicy. I'm still not going to condemn newton yet, but the water's risin, and his dam is getting ready to break.

Midstate01its been really interesting down here in mississippi. The auburn fans have come out of the woodwork this season!! When the first Cam story came out, they all defended him and said it was all false. All while at work i tried to tell the guys, look the guy has already been in trouble at UF, and had to leave there........so dont get too confident. But i was just an idiot overrated buckeye fan, who cant beat an SEC team. Now all the sudden they are all getting really quiet. I think they pretty much see the writing on the wall that Cam is going to be ineligible. Now they all are just trying to find excuses for why its not his fault it happened.
so now im back to making them realize they are still irrelevant to CFB.. its been fun! for the most part its all in fun and I enjoy the trash talk!!! -

I thought that it sounded a lot like Reggie Bush when he returned his Heisman, saying that it was out of respect for the Heisman Trophy, but that it wasn't an admission of guilt. -

good point--whatever it is, something's wrong here, and IMO the NCAA will go at this fast and hard, either to confirm it or squelch it... they can't let this linger and fester like the Bush thing.krambman;552556 wrote:I thought that it sounded a lot like Reggie Bush when he returned his Heisman, saying that it was out of respect for the Heisman Trophy, but that it wasn't an admission of guilt. -
thedynasty1998I believe the Heisman voters just got their ballots and most will be sending them in within the next two weeks. There is absolutely no way that anything comes to fruition that soon from the NCAA.

jordo212000An interesting thought for pollsters could be this hypothetical... (this hypothetical depends on the NCAA acting quickly). What if Auburn makes the Nat'l Championship, but a week before the game Newton is found ineligible. Now we have a championship with a backup QB in which the other team probably knocks the crap out of them. My thought is this, I wonder how many pollsters will simply vote Auburn 3rd or 4th so that they can avoid any chance of that happening

karen lotzReports are out that the NCAA will suspend Cam Newton in the next 3-4 hours. Auburn/Georgia line has been removed from sports books in Vegas. Unreal.
Edit: The guy who supposedly first reported a suspension, Ian Fitzsimmons, said his comment was "a case like this can change in 3-4 hours." Some writer took that and turned it into Newton getting suspended. So there is no suspension coming today, maybe. -
thedynasty1998Absolutely no way Auburn suspends Newton. What do they suspend him for? Accepting money. Well then they are screwed.

Would auburn be 0-13 if that were to happen because he would have been ineligible the whole year not just that one game. -

Lotz said NCAA to suspend, not Auburn. Big difference. -

Sorry, misread. I would think that would be even more unlikely though. What do they suspend him for without a thorough investigation? -
karen lotzWell supposedly they have been investigating since January. Although the NCAA doesn't have any incident report paperwork filed. The whole situation is just odd.
And just to say it again, the suspension rumor was the result of some writer taking a quote waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of context and running with it. -
SykotykWebFire;552395 wrote:What if they didn't award him the Heisman, and didn't let Auburn play for the NC, and the find out this stuff isn't true?
Tough situation. Innocent until proven guilty?
That's the issue. If they can't determine the allegations to be true by then, they have to let Auburn's victories stand. And whatever the Heisman folks decide would stand. Which would be sickening if they were to win and then later next year get it vacated.
But the NCAA should try to pound through this. Like a court stay, the NCAA could get overwhelming evidence, yet not make the 'conviction', and preemptively nullify Auburn's victories to avoid a non-title title game. Besides, if these allegations become extremely strong (i.e., it's all over but the punishment) by the time the title game rolls around and Auburn is in it, how many people would really care about the game? It would be extremely detrimental to the NCAA and all the member schools for a sham of a title game (be the BCS what it may) to go on knowing beyond a doubt the outcome will be either: other team wins, or no one wins.
Sykotyk -
SykotykBesides, if he was ineligible, all the Auburn victories would have to be forfeited. So, Auburn couldn't make the SEC title game, or any bowl game this year.

lhslep134This whole ordeal has the potential to be nuts.

Per Stewart Mandel on cnnsi.com:
"The SEC was supposedly made aware of this information back in January, and it's hard to imagine the league didn't pass it along to the NCAA. If it didn't, you better believe the NCAA is looking into it now. Suddenly, this is shaping up to be the biggest pay-for-play scandal since I've been covering this beat"
Hmmm, any chance the SEC didn't notify the NCAA when they got word of it last Jan?? -
Terry_TateAnother interesting thing is LSU is sitting at 8-1 with their only loss to Auburn. If the Auburn games are forfeited with an ineligible player does LSU essentially take Auburn's spot since they would be undefeated with that loss taken away, even though they lost it on the field? Just another thing to think about in all of the craziness.

Fly4FunI think the most interesting/troubling situation would be after the NCG and all the bowls having been selected... and just after Christmas (Before the big bowls get going) it comes out that the accusations are true, he is ineligible and Auburn has to vacate the victories and everything.
What would the NCAA/BCS do?
Would they rearrange the bowls to get a new team into the NCG? If so then one of the bowls would be missing a team? Just not have that bowl play? What about that team's opponent?
OR
Kick Auburn out of the NCG... bump them to the lowest bowl yet to be played (so everyone still has a game to play). And bump everyone else up a slot and re-slot the remaining bowls accordingly?
OR
If you let Auburn play in the NCG that would be absolutely miserable. What would the ratings be knowing it really is nothing more than an exhibition game because Auburn can't win? -

If the SEC intentionally withheld this information... does the NCAA punish the whole conference? What do you even do at this point? Is the SEC just more corrupt both individual teams and as a whole conference more so than every other conference. -

If you did that you would have to go back and take away the loss and give the victory to all of Auburn's opponents which would really confuse the standings. You would have to re-evaluate the entire season with regards to the teams they played, where they really should be without the loss, but also factoring in strength of schedule and such for all of the computers would be weird. -

I would like to believe(who the hell really knows though), that because of the magnitude of what "could happen", as above, that the NCAA is in high gear in looking into this. The implications of what could happen are enormous in terms of college football. I would find it hard to believe that they aren't going at this with guns blazing trying to get the facts. But even at that, something like this could take a while. Its going to be very interesting to see how this all plays out.
And if it does play out, and nothing happens in the next few weeks. YOu can't tell me this isn't a HUGE distraction to Auburn and Newton. Don't be surprised to see it catch up with them with upcoming games. Georgia isn't very good...but if Auburn is THAT distracted or if Newton has a poor game, anything can happen. Then Bama is waiting two weeks down the road, at Bama. -
j_crazyi'm hoping this is true now. just to se the gigantic calamity of a cluster fuck that is sure to ensue.
also. has the UGA Auburn game officially been pulled from the vegas line? or was that a hypothetical that got blown out of proportion. -
thedynasty1998The NCAA isn't dumb and they realize they will only affect their bottom line with the timing of all this.
