Cam Newton and father admitted in phone conversations that money would determine coll

Wow. If it's true...huge. Talk about blowing up college football 2010.
  • bigkahuna
Wow! I thought it was strange when Cam said "I'm not going to sit up here and say anything about it, whether I did or did not do it, because I don't want to beat a dead horse talking about it. It's not going to affect me any way, shape or fashion."

I wonder what this piece of information will lead to since someone with Miss. State basically confirmed that Cecil Newton was looking for money.

Already posted the link in the Cam Newton thread. Does this really need a separate thread?
  • bigkahuna
Maybe we can merge them for the right price.

    Only in the SEC..

Just way too many things coming out of the woodwork now for there not to be some sort of truth to at least part of this.

Between the agents and this sort of crap, does anyone else think college football, and the SEC in particular, is about to implode?

Are they going to let Auburn play for national title when it would just be stripped from them anyway?

A similar argument took place this afternoon about the Heisman trophy. Do you award Cam Newton the Heisman this year only to have it be shipped back?

If the allegations can be substantiated before the SEC title game, I would assume they'd fasttrack the punishment stage and vacate the victories that he has taken part in. That would also DQ him from the Heisman. He also would be ineligible for the rest of the season, anyways. It would be horrible if Auburn goes to the NC, wins it, he's the Heisman winner, only to have both vacated within the following year IF this is all true.

Who do these people think they are? If these are half truths, they show total ignorance and idiocy. If you play with trash you will get dirty.

This is definitely getting interesting real quick.

What if they didn't award him the Heisman, and didn't let Auburn play for the NC, and the find out this stuff isn't true?

Tough situation. Innocent until proven guilty?

I'm a big Cam Newton fan as a football player, but there seems to be way too much smoke for there not to be a fire, big or small.

As fast(sarcasm) as the NCAA does their investigation, this thing could drag on for months. I'd find it hard to believe this will be finished by seasons end let alone the 1st of the year.
I have refrained from commenting...but the more stories that come out..the more intrigueing this becomes. One story you can simply just blow off. But now we have 3 of them? People want to scoff at the "character" issue...but it plays a big role here. If the kid has character issues, it opens up a a whole other realm of possibilities in terms of the play for $$.
And I realize there are issues EVERYWHERE. But with all that is going on within the SEC over the past year, with agents and now this...that conference certainly needs to address what the hell is going on. If this is true, as well as the other issues..it wreaks of a win at all costs. And thats pretty sad.

..."when the walls, come tumblin' down"....it was only a matter of time ;)

After the Reggie Bush fiasco, The Heisman Foundation sure as hell ain't gonna give out another trophy they will just have to take back again down the road.

Love it when the SEC shoots themselves in the foot, and the funny thing is they are so F'n good at doing it!

I thought the money issue had some substance, but the cheating is just ludicrous.

With that said, there is absolutely no way they don't play in the NC and that he doesn't win the Heisman, if nothing comes to fruition prior to each.

I find it funny that both he and his father continue to say things like "Whether we did it or not" Even entertaining the fact that you might have done it should bring up red flags. At least deny it because that might take a little heat off (in my eyes anyway).

    .

No, not now it isn't. What it does, is ad substance to the money issue as character is brought into it. If in fact he was involved in the stolen computers thing, and if he was in fact caught cheating....it easily adds to the notion that he would be willing to also take money to go to a college. So no, its really not ludicrous in the big picture of whats going on overall. When you build a case against someone, you use everything thats available from a factual standpoint.

This is the main problem with this situation. By the time the NCAA finishes their investigation this season will be long over. So, they declare him retroactively ineligible, Auburn is stripped of anything they accomplished this season (which may mean a vacated championship, but even if they played and lost it means that TCU or Boise never got the shot they should have) and his Heisman is taken back. All of this puts a huge black eye on college football. The NCAA needs to put all of their energy and resources behind investigating this and coming to a conclusion quickly, while still doing their due diligence and getting it right. Obviously it would be best if they closed this case by the end of November so that if they end up having to forfeit games from this year LSU or whoever would take their place in the SEC title game would have ample time to prepare.

I think when he said this he was referring to cheating at Florida and not taking money.

That may be, but his father is talking about the whole money thing. At least that's what I gathered from the quotes on ESPN.
