Mahoning Valley teams in 09-10

Do not know the score. What I do know is like you guys....we lost site of one of their three point shooters and he flat out killed us. I think he hit 4 three's in the 4th qtr. alone. Zombienation may have the score right above.

There won't be any sharing of the Blue conference title this year. Campbell shakes off a sluggish 1st quarter, and goes on to win the Title outright with a 66-47 win over Newton Falls. Scoring: Newton Falls 14-8 end 1; CM 34-24 half; CM 46-36 end 3; and CM 66-47 final. Congrats guys, you earned it!!!!!
2 games left before the tourney, @ Champion friday, home to Salem next tuesday, finish out strong!

Congratulations to Coach D. and the Red Devils !!!! Stay focused and finish the regular season with two more wins.

Really playing well right now. I believe they are 13-3 overall....and 9-0 in the tier.....while going 10-1 in the AAC. Keep it going.

I've been trying to keep up with Poland's results on the Vindicator's webpage, but have been unable to find anything recently. I know there have been a lot of cancellations, but I have to imagine that they are back to playing again. Does anyone have any feedback of their current record? Last I checked, they were 11-1 with a lone loss to Canfield.

    They beat Niles tonight, 107-73

Salem scores 19 points in the first half and only gets 47 in the game last night against one of the weakest teams in the valley. We have some great athletes and several excellent players, but we continue to fail to make use of their talents and athleticism. The offensive scheme is incredibly poor, the defense is nothing but a 2-3 zone, all the time regardless of the opposition, and our play is reflective of our practices, or lack thereof, even the inbounds plays stink. This has been going on for 3 years now; if it continues for another year the once-proud tradition of Quaker basketball may be lost for good. We need real change we can believe in.

Just curious as to how you know what goes on at practice? Are you in the gym?

I know what is going on, although in some respects I probably wish I didn't. I have offered up constructive criticism for several years; I am now convinced though, that it is impossible to achieve our potential and allow the kids to experience the highest level of success with the existing head coach (although I believe the assistants to be knowledgable, effective, and contributing). I don't like the situation any more than the next knowledgable basketball person because it is not fun to have to be critical, but we cannot continue down this path and expect this thing to turn around. I wish it were otherwise. If playing .500 ball with the players and athletes we have is ok, then we simply are not seeing eye to eye with respect to goals and achievement. And if the coach is embarrassed to be a part of Quaker basketball, well ..................................... I'll end it there.

[see my related post on the Struthers thread].

I hope the kids finish strong; I know they are giving all they have as they try to uphold the rich tradition that has been Quaker basketball.

    Go Quakers!!

I don't want .500 seasons or below when - and I agree with you here our guys are better than .500 - I want achievement - I really thought this year would be better than the record shows b/c our guys are better than this record. I agree with the "not fun to be critical" b/c I enjoy watching these guys play - and from what I see on the court - they enjoy playing and the negative comments in the stands take that away at times - the players have no control over this and therefore I believe in cheering the team on - therefore - I once again agree with you when you say Go Quakers!

    Sizzling Poland again reaches 100
Sat, February 20, 2010 @ 12:00 a.m.POLAND — The Poland High boys basketball team’s offense is designed so that any player can score from anywhere on the court.

The Bulldogs’ defense is downright offensive as well.

Poland defenders forced 28 Howland turnovers as the Bulldogs ran past the Tigers, 100-71, in Friday’s All-American Conference Red Tier contest. Ben Donlow led Poland with 20 points and eight rebounds.

It was the fifth time that the Bulldogs (17-1, 6-1) topped the century mark as they won for the eighth consecutive time and improved to 7-0 at home.

While coach Ken Grisdale’s starters accounted for 52 points, it was his “B” group that he couldn’t stop talking about after the game.

“We got some quality minutes from our group tonight and that was good to see,” Grisdale said. “We need scoring punch from them if we are to be successful.

“One thing we will need to talk to them about, however, is that they sometimes pass the ball entirely too much,” Grisdale said. “They’re an unselfish group, but the one thing they need to realize is that when you pass a little too much the likelihood of turning the ball over becomes much greater.”

While the Bulldogs raced to the 54-42 lead at intermission, it was a 22-3 spurt in the third period that broke the game wide open.

A tenacious defense registered 23 steals.

Three Bulldogs players registered at least five assists with senior Luke Wollet, who averages 7.5 assists per outing, dishing off a game-high eight assists to run his total to 61 over the past six outings.

“Luke wants the assists record really bad and if I had to name a Most Valuable Player for us right now, he’d be at the top of the list,” Grisdale said.

“The premise of our defense is to force turnovers and while we run multiple defenses, our one weakness has been our first trap,” Grisdale said. “That is something that we will need to work on.

“The premise on the other side of the ball is that this is a game of spurts, and you saw that tonight at the outset of the game and right after halftime,” Grisdale said.

The Tigers’ T.J. Lanier scored the first bucket of the game, but Donlow’s five points keyed a 12-0 run by the Bulldogs as they raced to a 24-16 advantage.

    Lanier, who had a game-high 26 points, also hauled in a game-best 10 caroms for the game’s only double-double.

Donlow and Dave Baker combined to score 12 of the Bulldogs’ 30 second-quarter markers.

“It seems as though everyone has been there for each other since the midway point of the season,” Donlow said. “We just go all out and do what we have to do at both ends of the court when our number is called and we are in the game.

“We have two pretty big regular season games left this week so we cannot look ahead,” Donlow said.

The Bulldogs, who nailed 13 triples in the game, used four buckets from beyond the arc in the third period to outscore Howland by a 32-17 as they forged a comfortable 86-59 advantage.

A Jerry Lawman “trey” with 2:01 remaining then allowed the Bulldogs to hit 100.

The Tigers (7-11, 2-6) fell for the second straight time, losing for the fifth time in the past six outings.

Salem at Struthers tonight. Should be a good one the cats are rolling and Salem is coming off a nice game last night.

It was; if the kids are allowed to run and use their skills they can be dangerous.

If Salem runs and pounds it inside they will be successful; and if they play man-to-man tonight they will win. If we sit in a zone and let Struthers bomb away 3's it will work to their advantage and it will be hard for us to overcome. We could win by 15; we could lose by 10........... hoping for the best.

    Go Quakers!

quake good point. You can not play the Cats sitting in a zone.

Salem was really out of sync tonight.

Congrats to Struthers - AAC Champs White Tier...

Congrats Wildcats 18-2 Great Season! Riding a 15 game win streak going into the post season!

wow thats a big turn around for those guys over thier in Struthers!!!! Congrats

Nice season for the Cats. They did a nice job winning ones they maybe shouldn't have and blew out teams they should have. If they can continue to shoot well it should be interesting. But I don't care how well they shoot if they get to Poland. If they try to get up and down with Poland the same result will happen as earlier. Nobody wants to see a keep a way game but that to me is their only chance.

And now you know why we got popped pretty good; a church league coach would know better. Add to that our inability to take advantage of our size/power advantage underneath (our bigs combined for 7 points) and there you have it.

    The beat goes on .....................................

Were you at the game Oats? The guys just seemed really out of their game mode - second guessing themselves - turning the ball over - passing up shots normally taken - whether you agree or not with the leadership (and I know you don't) - the guys just didn't play well. A couple in foul trouble didn't help - just seemed a step behind IMO. (I do agree with you on getting the ball inside - we have scorers in there and not just the big guys always - some games we do this well - others - not)... our bigs had more than 7 b/c two had 18 combined - unless we aren't talking about the same players...
