Were you at the game? Those 2 teams were anything but average.
How much basketball have you watched in the SLL? I go back to the beginning of SLL. The last 5-6 years in the SLL have been flat out bad. No teams that even resemble a regional or state team. Yes I was at the game. Not well played by either team. Way too many turnovers and easy missed shots to be whining about the officials. Both teams played average at best.
the game has changed way to much to compare now to the beginning of the sll. i will agree teams in this league are not very good at the basics but they are a whole lot more athletic
Thsts what is frustrating. The kids are alot more athletic now but lack basketball skills and knowledge. I know for a fact skills are taught at lower levels in almost all the SLL schools then its seems they get lost somewhere when they get to high school.

Regarding the top of the SLL, it has realistically been Eastwood's league to lose throughout the season. While they have struggled to get solid play from their guards, it appears they finally have figured out that they cannot rely too heavily on them and have learned to win without much contributions from those positions.

I also have been impressed with the play of Otsego. They have freshman playing big minutes for them and to be in the race this late in the season is a testiment to their coach. If they can find a way to go 2-1 in the aforementioned big games down the stretch they could pull out a tie for the league.

While their coach has done a great job, I also feel that Liskai out a Gibsonburg does an excellant job as well. He keeps his kids playing hard and gets a lot out of them.

As for Genoa, many of you come on here and rip into the coaching of Overmyer as to why they are not winning as you feel they should. While I agree that he needs to implement a few more offensive plays in, he is not the reason for their losses. While Bassit and Wonnell both are talented players, they are not the world beaters that you make them out to be. Yes they are skilled players, however those two are not talented enough to carry a team. The arguing amongst players is not the coaches fault, it falls on the young men to grow up and with that success will come.

It will be interesting to see how these teams finish the season and hopefully one can surprise some and make a little run throughout the tourny. For those to complain about the league being terrible are just looking to glorify the time that they were directly involved. Like all leagues, they go through ups and downs and the SLL is no different.
Good post. Nice analysis of the league race. Problem is the league has been down for quite a while now. This isnt a 2-3 year thing. When I talk to people from schools outside the SLL, usually the conversation ends up at why is the SLL lacking behind most other leagues of their size? I want the SLL to be good but its been going the other way for a while now. And quite frankly I dont see it ending with possible exception of Otsego who seems to be developing some young talent. I'm sorry if some of you dont agree, but there is talent in this league but the actual play is lacking behind other leagues.

I agree that people are way to harsh on Overmyer. He is a great person. I never have heard of anyone say that he has hurt a player before. I dont agree at all with his coaching styles but that is just me. Im not the coach so I have no say. His coaching "thrives" on talent which has been plentiful over the last couple years. Look way back....Skees brothers, B. Sutter, Robertson, Vonck, Edens, Alt, diekmans, Dunn, Hornyak, Gargas, Schumacher, etc, etc.....there has been a crazy amount of college athletes play for overmyer just in the past couple years. Matt, Richard, hopefully Lester and whoever else will advance to some level and play after high school as well.
College athletes- Me, B. Sutter, Robertson, Dunn, Hornyak, Gargas, Schumacher, both diekmans, Clark, please add more! Thats just in the past like 6 years..... The reason people get so upset with Overmyer is because they have a crazy amount of athletic people but have 1 title to prove it. Also no offense to the 08' team but that might have been the worst team of all the years. Im very happy for them that they won though. It was a good time when they did.

However, next year scares me. No knock on any of the players but Genoa has no size and no stud. That might be the first time Genoa has had neither under overmyer! Next year could be very ugly because unless Genoa finds how to actually play the game of basketball instead of trying to win a title solely on athletic ability...genoa might be screwed!

With all due respect, part of the problem with the "frustration issue" at Genoa and maybe some other places is that the players are not as athletic and good as people are reporting. There were plenty of players in the SLL in the 1970's that could more than compete athletically with the SLL players of 2009-2010. And then you add stronger fundamental skill sets...I am not saying there are not excellent athletes at Genoa. It's just that the art of exaggeration is being practiced on this website in my opinion.

Athletes dont always make basketball players. Bottomline basketball is the 3rd sport in line at Genoa right now behind Football and Baseball. The "athletes" everyone talks about dont seem to care as much about basketball.
  • BBall15
I also agree that they have had some great athletes go through the program, but of all you just listed to play sports in college I believe that only the Diekmans played basketball. Some that you named were very good at baseball or football, but did not make the same impact in basketball.

In regards to the 08' team, I have heard others say that they may have been less talented, but from what I saw in the games I attended, the way they played together was above the rest of the teams. The arguing that has been going on atleast appeared not to happen with that group and if you matched that team up with this years I think the 08' team would win convincingly.

The chemistry of a team is very underrated in high school sports and that is clear if you look at Genoa's team this season. To say that the athletes dont care as much about basketball doesnt seem very accurate to me at all.

This is for any fans of either Otsego or Maumee. Does anyone know if their postponed basketball game has been rescheduled, and if so, what is the new date? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as I am in the process of putting my poll together for next week and need that game if it is no longer being played this week. Even if they are going to squeeze it in this week, I need the date. I do know that the Bowling Green-Central Catholic Game has been moved from the 16th to the 20th of February. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

This is the most accurate post about Genoa!

    Eastwood 58 Gburg 39
    Genoa 52 Otsego 42

Got these scores off of wtol.com. Can anyone confirm? Big loss for Otsego if that's the case.
  • bwcomet89
The Genoa/Otsego score is correct, meaning they will now need to win out to gain a share of the title, in all likelyhood.

    Elmwood over Lakota 53-43

TJ Waldock and Adam Tyson with 14 and Jack Waldock and Jay Hannah with 9 for the Royals.

Scott Hoffman with 17 and Jake Wiseman 9 for the Raiders.

Eastwood has set themselves up for the Title if they win out. They were the early favorite and now they seem to be back on the beam, playing pretty well. they took a very good Springfield team to a last second shot before falling the other night and they have been taking care of SLL business very well lately. Otsego has simply got to beat both "Woods" at home to win the SLL. Is it possible? Absolutely. Will it happen?? It might take a little Al Michaels commentary at this point.

    Side Note:

My mother-in-law and her sisters had dinner at a place in Pemberville before the Eastwood-Lake girls game on Friday. She told me that four Eastwood boys basketball players, that she was sitting next to, were very well behaved and polite. And for her to say that is something.

Thought I would pass on a good story. It was nice to hear. I wish I could have been there to shake their hand.

There are a lot of good young people out there. It's more popular to emphasize the bad and ignore the good but in over 40 years as a public school teacher and coach, it has been my experience that the vast majority of kids that I have run into have been very good. Kudos to the basketball players from Eastwood.
  • insuranceguy
^^^ The Eastwood players are very well bahaved. I know after every Genoa game there players would pray at midfield or center court with the Genoa players. It was nice to see kids having great morals. Well done parents.

Now on the athletic side on the SLL. Unfortunately the SLL did get a seed higher than 3 in the draws. Shows what the rest of the northwest ohio coaches think of this league. I dont think it will happen but it is a real possiblity that no SLL team will go in to districts. All the SLL schools have very tough opening round games or sectional final games. None will be favored in sectional finals. Definately not what this league needed.
  • karen lotz
Do you have a list of the matchups? I'm feeling too lazy at the moment to look them up :dodgy:

  • bwcomet89
Yeah I don't like any SLL team's chances either. Otsego could get lucky and make it to the District semis, but it will take a lot more than luck for anyone else. Genoa beat Evergreen last year but it was in overtime and Mossing is a completely different player now. I say good luck to all SLL teams come playoff time, regardless of the odds, because anything could happen.

    Tuesday night scores:

    Gibsonburg 56
    Lake 39

    Genoa 73
    Woodmore 62

    Otsego 56
    Elmwood 34

I got these scores from toledoblade.com. Is the Otsego/Elmwood score right? What happened?
  • royal_k
A good old fashioned butt kicking in Otsego last night. Very disappointing performance from Elmwood. They played and shot as poorly as they have all year, and Otsego played about as well as they have all year. The 2 freshman for Otsego outscored the Royals by themselves. Smoyer missed one shot all night and made five 3's, for 22 points. And Limes had 14. There was a time in the second quarter where Smoyer made a 3 on 4 straight possessions. Score was 30-11 at the half and went to 24 in the second half. To Elmwood's credit, they did cut it to 13 with six minutes to go but that was it. If this Elmwood team shows up the rest of the year, they won't win another game.
  • ross ford81
    Very surprised at this one.
  • Swamp Fox
Well, The Knights are still in the Title hunt. I don't think they can play another game like they played against the Royals, but then they don't have to win by 22 against the Eagles to move back into a tie for the lead.
I really like the way those guys in Tontogany battle. It should be a very exciting game. May the best team win!:D

    Genoa over Gibsonburg tonight, 44-43.
