2009 2010 Suburban Lakes League basketball

As many know, I like Rolf. I trust that he wont get into foul trouble. Wonnell has really earned my respect. I feel he will do the same. Both of those players are very good and will pretty much cancel each other out. Rather that be with 4 pts each or 40.

The key is if Genoa can collapse their zone so Eastwood cant pass the ball in the middle of their zone and get easy shots all night like the first meeting. Genoa is a better shooting team than Eastwood. The biggest key though is...can Genoa force Eastwood to shoot 3's or let them take 5 footers again all night?

ClassyPoster- If Genoa wants to win the league they cant lose another game....rather that be this thursday or any other night!

    Other SLL games thursday

    Eastwood at Genoa
    Otsego at Woodmore
    Lake by 10+
Care to give your reason why you believe there will be a 30+ point change in this rematch and that Lake will win by 10+?
Lake played better their last 2 games, but were blown out by Gburg before that. The Royals have won 5 of their last 6, all by double digits. Including a win at Gburg saturday by 15.

Otsego's recent loss at Eastwood has narrowed the gap, but when Eastwood plays Genoa this week, one of those pre-season contenders will have another loss. Otsego has some key games left but they are essentially at home. if Otsego is serious about this, they have to go to Woodmore and take care of business. When you create monsters, you have to be able to withstand the pressure. Elmwood is also lurking on the horizon and then there is the improving Lake squad out there to play spoiler. What a year!!

    ^^ What another mediocre year!!!

You can look at it that way or you can look at it another way. There isn't as big of a gap between the upper teams and the lower teams this year. Is it due to the upper teams being not up to par? I don't think so. Maybe the teams in the bottom of the standings are stronger this year. Lake is a perfect example. I can speak for what I've seen. The Royals are playing much better than they were in the first part of the season. But that's what you want. You want your team to improve throuout the season and hopefully be playing their best basketball come tournament time. It's called peaking.
  • insuranceguy
^^^ Explain why the conference has not one good out of conference win then if this league is not mediocre? So what the top to bottom is equal which it isnt but ok. The top of league is mediocre and bottom is bad. Period.

In the sll/sbc/mal area the caliber of basketball is TERRIBLE. You've got one good team in Port Clinton some average team's in Eastwood, Genoa and a whole shitload of team's that are just really really bad. Genoa has the potential to be a good team but their not strong enough on the bench to get to that point. I'm talking about coaching and the player's that actually come off the bench.

Also while i'm bitching will somebody PLEASE teach these kid's that the backboard is their for a reason!

    ^^ Tink I agree wholeheartedly

    My take on the SLL:
*EASTWOOD: Changes in the lineup or at least playing time seem to be paying off. Senior guard who was starting not any more, and a sophomore guard replacing him seems to be quite an improvement. Don't understand a 6-3 sophomore with almost no playing time not getting time on the JV (not sure why he's on varsity anyway). Should be able to use considerable size to better advantage. Overall, might be good enough to finish winning the SLL but tourney prosopects not good.
*GENOA: Size plus athleticism and a focused attitude might get them at least a share of the SLL. Should win tonight in key SLL game. Wonnell keeps getting better and Bassitt is solid.
*OTSEGO: Impressive so far in terms of wins in the SLL but I see them falling behind Eastwood and Genoa before its over, and maybe 4th behind Elmwood. Weisenborn is a nice guard and the young players are quality freshmen who are fortunate to have playing time opportunity (most leagues and most seasons they would not).
*ELMWOOD: Coming together as a team as well as anyone else, but lack of size could be the difference in a key game or two down the stretch. Good athletes who play hard. The post-season draw is likely to be really hard.
*THE REST: Gibsonburg will be a contender in the TAAC some day and is close to bothering the top teams this year in a down SLL. Lake is getting better but still a ways to go (will they be better next season?). Woodmore found a way to be a decent Lakota but mostly the Wildcats are just miserable.

Regarding the last post, can anyone answer with names the players who are starting now for Eastwood or getting more playing time. I understand the senior guard Hook is referring to is probably Schmaltz (not playing much at all and likely won't be) and the taller sophomore is Jennings? I thought he played JV last season and would be 6th man or so this year. There are probably some names I'm leaving off, and who is the sophomore guard who is now starting or playing more?
  • royal_k
ross....not sure who the sophomore guard is. Could it be Jacob Faykosh?

hook.....you hit it on the head with the Royals lack of size. It has been a concern all season. But even with that problem, they haven't been killed on the boards except a couple of games. And yes, they are in the same sectional as LB, OG, and Riverdale. All 3 teams are strong. It is a tuff sectional. Only 5 teams in this, with PH being the other.

i dont see how woodmore is so terrible this yr. all they lost was jacobson and another kid whose name escapes me. maybe its the coach. any ideas???? they finished the yr stong last yr. if they would have played genoa or eastwood around tournament time, woodmore could have beaten them.

For those that feel the need to bitch and moan about the level of play like someone that bleeds every month, why not instead of bashing 14-18 year olds on a message board, pull out a clipboard and volunteer time with the youth sports, or get on a coaching staff so your excellent knowledge of sports and how to play the game can be used to its ability.

    ^^^^Very well said.

    Elmwood 66
    Lake 37

Elmwood broke it open in the 3rd with a 27-8 quarter, after leading 25-17 at the half. Lead went to 40 early in the 4th before the benches were emptied. Pretty sloppy 1st half by Elmwood. TOs and missed shots (including layups). But they came out in the 3rd and turned up the defense. TJ Waldock led with 19, Tyson had 15, and Hannah 12.
  • royal_k
Also got a text that Eastwood beat Genoa 47-44.
  • bwcomet89
    Eastwood 47
    Genoa 44

Rolf lead with 20, Wonnell had 16 or 18, Bassitt has 15. I have been watching Rolf play since 7th grade and tonight was probably his best game. This was a very entertaining game in spite of TERRIBLE officiating. I am usually leanient for officials because its only high school and you cannot expect amazing officiating, but they decided the game tonight. They took Lester completely out of the game by putting 3 very weak fouls on him early in the 3rd. Late, Genoa had the lead and only had to hold on to win, and they fouled Wonnell out on a definite non-foul with over 1 minute to go. It was all Eastwood from there. Genoa had one last chance with 9 seconds left down one, and Bassitt was tripped and turned it over. No call. Though either team deserved to win tonight, the referees took that game away from Genoa.

With that win it also takes Genoa all but out of the SLL title race, barring a miracle, and makes this race Eastwood's to win.

Dissapointing loss tonight but that's what happens when only one guard plays well and you miss lots of free throws down the stretch. Genoa did a great job of battling back and then just could not put the finishing touch on the game. I would like to see a little more of the Mid-Range J as I think every shot we took was either 5 ft and in or beyond the arc

Hey, I was only off by 40 or so, I'm getting better in my old age.

Typical Genoa BS following a loss. Get over it, Genoa isn't that good and next year they will be even weaker. Football included in the "get over it" comment.

Meanwhile.......Otsego takes care of business on the road with a 61-56 win at Woodmore. There are some good games on the horizon. Don't the Knights host a couple of huge games in the league the second time through?
And while we're at it...What about Elmwood's destruction of the Lake Flyers, by 29 points?? It's anyboby's title to win (or to lose!).

Typical? I did and will mention again that this was the first time I have ever pointed the finger at the officials for deciding the game, because I do believe that they did. You can stick to your opinions and I can stick to mine. I didn't post that comment hoping you would approve.

By the way, you adding football into the conversation meaning you are picking Lake to win next year? If that vaunted Hankish defense can keep Genoa under 40 they may have a shot.

I have not said one thing about any kid in this league. Go way back in this thread I stated then that there is not a good coach in this league at all right now. Read before you type!!!! Until the coaching gets better at the top the youth leagues wont matter. And who says some of us dont coach??? You have no idea.

What is this, first grade? Stop the bickering. Anyways that loss just ended the Comets season and from the looks of these players it seems like they don't care about the rest of the season now. Overmyer needs to really buckle down on this team or they'll just mail it in like the '02 Cavs
