Good stuff rider1....thanks.riders1;1109136 wrote:Did a little research and found that 1980 was the 1st regional appearance, so we did not win a district title before 1980 and haven't looked later to see if we have won 3 district titles in a row, but don't think we have.
1980 (16-4 season) beat Hoban and Akron South in sectional, beat CCC 74-42 and Fairless 69-58 in 2ot, in District, beat Chagrin Falls (17-6) 59-57 and Warren JFK (24-0) 73-71 in regionals, lost to Hamilton Ross (24-2) in state semifinals 67-57. Ross beat Portsmouth 45-44 in finals.
1981 (16-4 season ) beat CCC and Woodridge in sectionals, beat Coventry 77-57 and Northwest 55-45 in districts, lost to Warren JFK (22-2) 48-45 in regional semifinal.
1982 (15-5 season) beat Coventry and Manchester in sectionals , beat Norwayne 58-52 in district semifinal, then lost to the Curtis Wilson led SVSM (18-4) 50-33 in the district finals, so we were close to 3 Regionals in a row, but not quite. -
Old RiderDevon Winters is due to have a big game. Hopefully thats tonight.
We need to play good fundamental basketball, get after it on defense, and hit our free throws!
Go Red Riders! -
riders1A couple more later AA district winners.
In 84-85 we were 19-1, beat Loudonville and Copley in Canton sectionals, beat St.Thomas in the district semis 72-56 and then the most memorable game to that date beat St.Vincent-St.Mary in the Tom Bolyard vs Jerome Lane game 54-50 for our 3rd Regional trip. However we then lost in the Regional semis to Youngstown Rayen 72-51 on a cold shooting night. We had a record, to that point, 21 straight game winning streak stopped by Rayen. Tom Bolyard 22.9 points a game in his senior season led the Riders. He did win a slam dunk competition at the North-South All-Star game held after the season at the Canton Fieldhouse.
That streak was broken the next season in 85-86 when we lost game 1 to Wadsworth 57-56, then won 23 in a row up to the Regional semis. We beat Loudonville in game 18, 93-46 then played them again in the 1st Smithville sectional game by running off to a 21-0 1st qtr, and a 46-5 halftime score and winning 84-24. Beat Norwayne 71-61 for another sectional title. In the districts we beat Coventry 62-61 and Hoban 49-42 for a 2nd straight District title. In the regional semis the streak ended at 23 games in a row in a loss to Hawken 45-44. So the season record was 23-2 , with game 1 a 1pt loss and game 25 also a 1 pt loss. I would be interested at our foul shooting stats in those 2 games. Rod Rehm and James Bradley were the leading scorers that 85-86 season.
The next District title was in 88-89, the 2nd year of the 4 division format. We only had 18 games during the regular season, that must have been when the OHSAA made us drop 2 games from the schedule. But what an 18 games they were as we scored 90 or more in 8 games with 3 over 100, the highest being in a 119-75 win over Rittman. We were DII and played at the Fieldhouse sectional with wins over Louisville 81-33 and Northwest 61-36. In districts we had wins over Marlington ( who had beat us in 88 sectionals) 63-46 and a district title win over Canton South 61-57. Our only loss of the season came in the Regional semis ( I have never liked games at the Canton Civic Center) to Dover 66-52 as we went cold from the floor 23 of 72, and Dover was 9 of 9 from the floor and 9 of 10 from the fouls line in the 4th quarter. Tom Snyder was the seasons leading scorer and present assistant coaches Jason Haley and Rocky Smith were on that team. -
riders1Congrats to Red Riders Drew Brenner , DIII 1st Team Northeast Inland District, and Devon Winters , 3rd team.

riders112th District Championship for the Red Riders which means 12 Regional appearances.
1st District championship was 1980. The others are 1981 , 1985, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011, 2012.
During that span we had district finals losses in 1982 to SVSM, 1990 & 1991 losses to SVSM, and 1994 lost to Norwayne.
Orrville played in 8 straight district finals from 1989 through 1996, and 10 in 12 years from 1985 thru 1996, then waited 14 years until our 2010 thru 2012 district finals run.
Congrats to Coach Slaughter and the Red Riders on this memorable achievement. -
RedRider1^^^This is the kind of info that I need to see displayed on banners at the new gym...12 district titles along with our 5 regional crowns and 3 state titles is simply the mark of excellence and we need to remind current & former players, fans & visitor that we have a strong tradition.
-
riders1Exactly ! You saw all the banners at wooster for sectional district and state titles and appearances in various sports. It seemed that the General boys only state titles were in golf and lacrosse, with 1 final four in football about 25 years ago and all those district titles in boys basketball ........... no wait I don't think I saw any boys basketball district titles on all those banners. Is that right ringz?
-
THE4RINGZYes, two state championships in lacrosse. None in football. That's all I know as those are the only two sports I follow here in Wooster.
-
riders1Don't recall any Wooster boys basketball district titles as I think the good teams in the past would always run into McKinley and that would be the season ender for them.
-
Old Rider
I agree as well. The trophy/showcase is nice, but new updated banners with all of our accomplishments should be hanging in this new gym.RedRider1;1111522 wrote:^^^This is the kind of info that I need to see displayed on banners at the new gym...12 district titles along with our 5 regional crowns and 3 state titles is simply the mark of excellence and we need to remind current & former players, fans & visitor that we have a strong tradition.
If anyone's ever been to Berlin Hiland you know what I'm talking about.
Districts, regionals, final 4's, and state championship banners that all match in size, color, font...looks very nice and can be somewhat intimidating to opponents. -
riders1Some league title recognition, if we have any, would be nice also. I am not sure abouts the OCC and OHC leagues, but I know we had some titles in the All-Ohio league, but nothing to easily see those accomplishments on display.
-
OQBWe have a few OCC championships in volleyball and girl's basketball....and we have 1 in football (2005)
-
RedRider1Doing some research and came across an article about former Campbell Memorial standout Michael Farrington. We played them in 1992-93 in the regional final..one year after winning state. They beat us 55-54 and then cruised in their next two games to win state.
http://www.tribtoday.com/page/content.detail/id/534758.html?nav=5024
Notice he doesn't talk about the games at state...he talks about BEATING ORRVILLE as their big accomplishment that year. Thought that was interesting...
Frustrating to think how we had a real shot to repeat had we gotten past Campbell Memorial...and the thought that we could have had a period where we won 4 state titles in 5 years. Wow. -
riders1Is that the kid that got the reboundl under the basket with his foot out of bounds, but the ref did not see it, and they went on and held on for the win.
and notice "Red Raiders" in the article. -
RedRider1That sounds right...he was also an exchange student that live with the coach....and played basketball. Weird, I know.
