Yes, 5-13 , 5-9 in the OCC, and then played Chippewa in the 1st tourney game, just like this year. Weird ?BRF;1095560 wrote:Didn't we finish at 7-13 last year, too? -

An interesting note on Ashland and Seniors game:
WILLARD -- Effie James has been associated with the Mansfield Senior basketball program for the better part of the past two decades. Friday night at Willard he saw something he's never seen before.
He wasn't alone.
Trailing 34-9 early in the second quarter (check the math, that's a 25-point deficit, folks), the Tygers scored 80 points over the next 22 minutes for a stunning 89-78 win over Ohio Cardinal Conference rival Ashland in the Division I sectional final.
Mansfield Senior (18-3) will play Norwalk (21-0) in the district semifinals Thursday -- again at Willard. The Truckers pounded Northern Ohio League rival Sandusky 74-36 in Friday's opener.
"I've never been a part of anything like that," said James, who starred for the Tygers in the mid-'90s and has been a coach in the program for the past 16 seasons. "It wasn't execution. It wasn't conditioning. It was all heart, pure and simple. We had some kids who just weren't ready to go home yet."
Count 5-foot-4 Keon Johnson among them. Senior High's dynamic point guard and All-Ohio candidate jumpstarted the comeback in the third quarter, scoring 15 of his career-high 41 points in the period. Johnson canned four 3-pointers, all from well beyond the arc, as the Tygers cut Ashland's lead to 63-61 heading to the fourth.
"I was feeling it a little bit there in the third," Johnson understated. "We knew we were going to have to bring something more than we did in the first half, but we never panicked."
The Tygers pulled even early in the fourth period when Everett Rucker, who played on Senior High's junior varsity team all season, grabbed a Johnson miss and stuck it back with 7:14 to play. Johnson gave the Tygers the lead for good when he hit both ends of a 1-and-1 for a 67-66 edge with 6:13 remaining.
"We never took our foot off the gas pedal, they just turned it up to another notch," Ashland coach Tim Fralick said. "Keon is a great player. He was by far the best player on the court."
The Tygers began to pull away early in fourth and opened an 81-69 lead on a Johnson layup with 3:25 to play.
Ashland (9-13) cut the deficit to 81-73 on a Brandon Nardo putback, but could get no closer as Senior High sank 8 of 11 free throws in the final 1:16 to secure the win.
"We just stayed together as a team. We talked about it all week," said Senior High's Jalen Jones, who scored 22 points on 7 of 13 shooting. "We played with a sense of urgency -- we knew we could come back."
Rucker scored nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds off the bench.
"My job is to play defense and get after the ball like I do in practice," Rucker said. "Was there ever a sense of panic? No. When there is time on the clock, there is a chance."
Greg Gallaway led Ashland with 22 points and nine rebounds. Nardo had 15 points and 10 boards, while Marquise Jones had 14 points.

BRFBig win tonight and great job under the circumstances.
10-13.
p.s. - What a whale of a story on that comeback win by Senior. Unbelievable. But true. -
riders1Ugly win. Poor shooting on both sides, our foul shooting nearly cost us this game. But we move on to our 3rd straight district final game with our 3rd straight semi-finals win over Hillsdale. Survive and move on.
-
THE4RINGZCongratulations on the win tonight riders. Keep it going.
-
RedRider1Have we ever won 3 straight district titles before?
Won it in 91-92 and 92-93...but 93-94 got beat by Norwayne in districts.
Won it in 94-95 and 95-96...but didn't win it in 96-97
I know we've won our share of districts over the years...but can't think of a time where we've won 3 straight. -
riders11980 had 27 games
1981 had 25 games
1982 had 24 games , so I would assume we won districts in 80 and 81 with a possilility in 1982 if we had a bye in the sectionals.
It would also depend on when we started playing 20 games in a season, if you look at total games played per season to guess how far we went.
It would make for interesting research to be included in the programs in the future along with records against opponents. -
RedRider1Definitely...would be neat to see listed what level (district finalist, etc) each team got to & and whatever award they won that year (conf. Champs, regional champs, etc.)
If only we had someone that enjoyed this kind of research. -
Old RiderWell then...lets just make it 3 in a row and call it done!
-
BRFPretty sure we played 18 game seasons back then, riders1.
On the dunk T and the goal tending calls, our coach says he believes that refs like those blow calls because they don't officiate teams that are as athletic as ours. -
Old RiderBrenner hung on the rim against Chippewa and that should have been a T. But the dunk attempt against Hillsdale never should have been called a T. He did not hang on it.
-
OQBGreat ugly win last night....Keep it going Riders!
-
Old RiderIf we make foul shots late in the game we win by 10. Games can be won or given away at the line and we just about gave it away!
-
FlashThe ref that made the call is a college ref, so he's probably seen some athletic people. Don't hang on it and take all the possibility out of it being called.
-
Old RiderCollege ref? No wonder he is working high school games. Demoted, cut in pay, and he needs more experience!

The WCAL season is now over and ends at 6-8 in the tournaments.
Also oldrider, I do know of a ref from Massillon who has been reffing for 36 years , who does Big East college games but still does area high school games, including a game at Orrville. Some just love to ref no matter what level the game. -
1_beastGood Luck Riders....Keep the run going!

riders1Did a little research and found that 1980 was the 1st regional appearance, so we did not win a district title before 1980 and haven't looked later to see if we have won 3 district titles in a row, but don't think we have.
1980 (16-4 season) beat Hoban and Akron South in sectional, beat CCC 74-42 and Fairless 69-58 in 2ot, in District, beat Chagrin Falls (17-6) 59-57 and Warren JFK (24-0) 73-71 in regionals, lost to Hamilton Ross (24-2) in state semifinals 67-57. Ross beat Portsmouth 45-44 in finals.
1981 (16-4 season ) beat CCC and Woodridge in sectionals, beat Coventry 77-57 and Northwest 55-45 in districts, lost to Warren JFK (22-2) 48-45 in regional semifinal.
1982 (15-5 season) beat Coventry and Manchester in sectionals , beat Norwayne 58-52 in district semifinal, then lost to the Curtis Wilson led SVSM (18-4) 50-33 in the district finals, so we were close to 3 Regionals in a row, but not quite. -
BRFThanks for the trip down memory lane, riders1. BRF was coaching back then. One memorable game was the one against Chagrin Falls in which we were down like 17 points at half time. We always had great battles back then against Fairless, with the Hollinger boys and a thug named Arney. So we DID play 20 game regular seasons back then!
One more thing, the purpose of the hanging on the rim rule is so that if a player thinks they are going to land poorly and possibly be injured, they may do so. A T should not be called unless it is flagrant showboating. -
riders1looks like a 20 game season started in thr 79-80 season, however in the 83-84 , 84 -85 we only had 19 games. Then in 85-86 only 18 games and again in 88-89 only 18 games. I don't remember which season the OHSAA made us drop 2 games, maybe 88-89, but from then on we have had 20 regular season game and next season start the 22 game schedule.
And it did seem like we ran into SVSM alot in districts and regionals over the years.
And I did see your picture in those "old" yearbooks I looked through. -
THE4RINGZGood luck this weekend riders.
