Wayne County League Basketball

Dalton was dominant in beating Rittman 59-31. The Indians had a chance at halftime and got blown out in the 3rd. I'll say it again but rebounding killed them. Rittman was without jr Brennen Johnson who has been an above average shooter off the bench and has started some games for the Tribe. The Indians handled the Dalton press pretty well but were dominated in the paint.

Dalton has outrebounded every opponent this season so far. They have a big weekend coming up against 2 good teams with Northwestern Friday and Hillsdale saturday.

little crazy having these two teams back to back !
  • Bobcat
Not much WCAL talk on here. Nobody likes basketball?

Did anyone see the Hillsdale/Smithville game? Sounds like it really wasnt as close as the score. Did Smithville play that poorly or is Hillsdale just that much better?

I haven't seen Norwayne play in a couple games but it looks like the football players are starting to contribute a bunch more. I see Berger had 26 the other night followed by Harris with 12. Glad to see them contributing. If they all get it together at the same time they might end up being pretty good

I think smithville is really struggling finding any consistent help for klotzle. Bates is talented but has not been consistent. Noone else has done anything. This let's opposing teams let klotzle "get his" and still win
  • Bobcat
That's what it sounds like. It sounds like Bates really struggled the other night. If he or Klotzle struggles they are probably in trouble

Outside of Licata who are the other key players for Hillsdale?
  • Mr. Russell
Bolinger made it sound like Alex played much worse than he did.

If scoring 16 a game (double figures), pulling down 8 boards a game (as a point guard), and having 4 dimes a game is inconsistant or not enough than Idk what is.

Alex does most of the ball handling is the only one who creates shots for anyone else, including Klotzle, so at times he doesn't score baskets. Unfortunately all anybody looks at is the point column.

With that being said, I agree, if nobody else steps up besides him and Klotzle, they won't win. The reason Smithville runs no plays for Steve is because he has no offensive game. He gets a majority of his points off lay-ups and offensive rebounds. Which he has dominated at so far this season. They also haven't been runnning any post-up plays or isolation plays for Bates either, which were very successful last year and during stretches early this season.

I simply think Hillsdale won because they controlled the tempo and played the type of game that they wanted to play.

    EDIT:
Upon further review, Alex entered the weekend 3rd in the league in scoring, 5th in rebounding, and 4th in assists. Also was shooting 49% from the field as a guard and averaging 2 steals a game......... I would argue that as an all-around basketball player he is having the best season in the league. But his team won't win enough and he may not score enough to be in that conversation which is a shame.

Klotzle is also just playing his butt off. He plays harder than anyone else on the court, every single game and it shows with his rebounding numbers so far this season.
  • Bobcat
I agree Alex is very good. I dont think he's the best in the league but he is good. We do have to keep in mind that if you are the point guard on a team without many weapons and you dont run any plays for your best offensive weapon (Klotzle) your numbers are going to be higher than the typical point guard.

I am looking forward to next Fridays match up between the Cats and the Smithies. It's always spirited. It should be interesting. Who all starts for Smithville Mr Russell?
  • Mr. Russell
Who do you think is the best in the league Bobcat? I would be interested to hear that, as everyone has an opinion. I am also not saying that Alex necessarily is. What I will say is that all-around his stats are very impressive.
For instance. I don't even need to look at the stats. I know he is not scoring a lot this year, but I still think that Chase Moyer is one of the 3 best players in the league. Scoring just isn't everything. This is also coming from the guy who said that Davis and Klotzle would have big seasons this year.

Also, we disagree about who Smithville's best offensive weapon is I think. You would think being the point guard you would score more on a team with not much on offense, like Mckean last year with the Huskies, but that is not how it has been this year in Smithville. He rarely will bring the ball down the court and try to score it without moving the ball first. Where he could be much more effective is if Smithville played an up-tempo brand of ball (which Hillsdale didn't want to play), using the athletes in the open court.

Best rebounder, no contest, but best offensive weapon, I can't say that is Steve.

The starting line-up has changed this year a few times but I would guess that Smithville will start:
    Isaac Calendar
    Alex Bates
    Kenny Larabee
    Jimmy Pew
    Steve Klotzle

Burger of Norwayne is best player in league.
  • Bobcat
Paul is funny. Berger is not the best in the league. He is very good and I think as the year goes on he will become more and more effective. He is versatile and has good size and speed. Typically he guards the other teams best player (if he's not a post). He, Alex and Chase are definitely 3 of the best in the junior class. Norwayne has alot of weapons so Berger doesnt need to score a lot every game. The great thing about Norwayne is that it always seems to be someone different stepping up every game. I'm not sure who the best in the league is. It's probably a little early to tell. I would have said Licata at the beggining of the year but I haven't seen him play this year yet and I'm not sure he's physical enough to be called the best. IMO he doesnt use his size enough
  • Bobcat
Paul, it's Berger with an e. He's a great kid too by the way.
  • Mr. Russell
Norwayne is definitely going to be tough to beat. I was extremely impressed with their win on the road at Loudonville. I think they match up very well with Norwayne and playing with the nest is always tough.

    Norwayne 70 - Buckeye 43

'cats had a strong second half after only leading 22-20 at halftime. Kaleb Harris had an early dunk.

Berger is an very good player but I think norwaynes best most important player is Maxwell. He makes them go

Another great win last night for the Bobcats. Can't wait till Friday vs. the Smithies, should be a good game.

I agree - Maxwell at point and Davis in the middle have been the MVPs so far. Fry has also been good and the "football" players are getting better every game.

7-0 and rolling, who will stop them?
