2010-2011 Suburban Lakes League Basketball

You could tell he didnt think Wonnel could play. Almost the only time he saw the ball was on rebounds. Bassitt wouldnt feed him. You have a 6'10 kid that is fairly athletic, you get him the ball. As they say "you cant teach heigth."

If wonnell wasn't 6'10 he wouldn't be much use on the bball court. But I guess that's why he is still playing, so good for him. Anyway why hasn't he played the past couple of games?

I have yo agree with oberhaus...I think he was under used his last 2 years, especially his senior year. You could tell he improved a lot from his junior to senior year. But they just didn't get him the ball enough. Elmwood had kids 7-8 inches shorter trying to guard him last year.

As far as Elmwood coaches helping players....the last player to go on to college and play basketball was Dustin Reynolds. His coach sent film all over the place. But, that was his dad. I don't know about the current group of kids, and how Ty Traxler does helping them. But I gotta believe he would be all over it, if needed. He's a great guy. ( and IMO a very good coach)

Lol underused is an understatement. The offense should of been centered around him, he would have worn down every team in the SLL trying to stop him. Anyways it all comes down to can Genoa get a true point guard this year to get Sutter and their terrific shooters the ball. Problem with last year was Bassitt wanted to score more than pass and they need a PG with opposite thinking this winter
  • birddog23
Genoa has terrific shooters? Nobody really stood out to me last year. I know Clark had one big game but other than that I never really heard of nor others.
  • bwcomet89
Cole Welsh is a great shooter but was not nearly composed enough last year to get a lot of playing time. If he got bigger and used to stepping up in certain situations he wil be a great asset to Genoa. Clark is very streaky, some days he would light up the scoreboard, others it'd be like there was a lid on the rim. Genoa will be heavily reliant on the arc this season as the size will be inexperienced.

When I think point guards, I think Ty Lawson from when he was at UNC. His senior year they were making a big deal out of his 19:1 assist to turnover ratio. Which reminded of Bassitt, who in every year he started for Genoa, had more turnovers than assists. It was because he wanted to charge the zone and score on his own far more than he wanted to set up his posts or guards on the outside. His big men who in many cases far outsized and out-talented the competition. But if you ask me Bassitt wasn't a true point guard, in many cases you heard people grumble about how Genoa's offense would be more effective if Matt had played SG. But in reality Genoa didn't have anyone better and Overmeyer had already invested too much into him so it was too late to change. Genoa could have achieved big things last year had Bassitt been more distributive of the ball, or if the team had a true PG. I can't fault Matt, he wasn't a PG, he was just put in that position.

With that said, does Genoa have a point guard this year with the ability to set up his teammates?

bwcomet: Are you sure Wonnell is only the second Comet to play D-1? Harland Niehaus played at VMI and I believe they are D-1 -- maybe not when Niehaus played but I believe they are now. Can anyone confirm or provide more information on this?
  • bwcomet89
I only said that because that's what it had said in the article. It was in the Suburban Press and they are somewhat prone to errors so it is a definite possibility. VMI is currently a D1 school, but like you said I too am not sure if it was D1 when he played.

I would say probably, because I just looked it up and VMI was a D1 school in 1976, so I'd assume they've been for quite a while.

Elmwood over Liberty Center tonight in a Foundation game 59-32.

TJ Waldock with 20, Jay Hannah and Max Zyski with 11

This was a game, in the sense that they charged admission, ran the consession stand, and sold 50-50. But it doesn't count on the teams records. All proceeds go to charity.

Elmwood is the decisive favorite in the SLL this year. Could lose once or twice (barring injuries) but should win it fairly easily.
  • birddog23
Going to be tough to contain the Waldock boys and Hannah every night. Plus they got a nice supporting cast it looks like as well

Just a couple days away from opening night!

Im hoping Woodmore makes a run at this.. Coach Sander is a great coach and has his players truly compete in every practice the players can either hate each other in these or truly come together as a team.. Woodmore still has some talent coming back and is my darkhorse. because in this sport the best athletes don't win the games the best team chemistry does.. Genoa showed this in 07-08 when they won the league with hardly the greatest talent and Miami is showing that in the NBA as well
  • royal_k
Unfortunately, Miami showed what having better talent will do last night.

It's almost gametime. Headed out to see what Elmwood does when the ball goes up against NB.

    Elmwood over NB 54-23.

    TJ Waldock with 19
    Jay Hannah 17

royal, do you happen to know the predicted standings for the league this year? I assume Elmwood was a unanimous pick to win, but after that?
  • royal_k
I didn't see it in any of the papers. But the only paper I get daily is the Cleveland PD. I'll look in the online papers and see if I can find anything.
  • royal_k
I found this in the Blade...but don't really agree with the order.

I don't agree with the order either, but this year is a year that 2-7 could be any rank. I like Elmwood to handle the SLL this year, but everyone else could end up anywhere imo.

    Gburg over Danbury 65-57

    Ottowa Hills over Woodmore 45-34

    Scores from last night

    Lake 80
    Rossford 77

    Napoleon 65
    Eastwood 32
  • Classyposter58
Good win for Lake even though I know Rossford lost a lot in Leahy and Napoleon score is nothing surprising
  • birddog23
Napoleon is good, very fast and physical. Eastwood was in awe against them and their pressure. But then again I kinda saw that coming because out of the whole team this year only one player has any true varsity experience. The rest either all played JV or middle school basketball and some didnt even play last year.

Its a work in progress for the Eagles and we will see how the Comets and Eagles matchup Friday night.
  • areyoukiddingme
Napoleon is fast but not good. I'd be surprised if they win 12 games this year.
