2010-2011 Suburban Lakes League Basketball

royal_kI'm ready for some hoops talk. What's everyon'e thoughts on the upcoming season in the SLL?
Elmwood and Otsego return some very good players and are probably the favorites IMO.
What ya think? -
karen lotzI would assume Eastwood will see a decent drop off this year after losing some pretty big (literally and figuratively) pieces. They were working on a run and gun fast paced system over the summer. I don't know were they are getting shooters from as that their outside shooting was a weakness last year.
-
OQBHow good is Genoa in bball? They had some pretty tall kids on their football team last year.
-
karen lotzThey were decent the past few years I believe. Eastwood has won the last 2 basketball titles at least. I think Genoa had a good year last year but 2 years ago they had some problems.
-
GCTD64My Picks
1 - Elmwood - Waldock boys and Hannah are gonna run the league! No other team can match up to them!
2 - Genoa - Genoa picks up a new kid from Northwood who is supposed to be a pretty good player. Hopefully he will be eligible and help out his team
3 - Gibsonburg - One real good guard and one good post. I think those two players will put this team over the rest of the league... Liskai is hands down best coach and the league so they have that goin for them as well
4 - Otsego - Dark horse to win the league! Young but athletic
5 - Eastwood - Lost to WAY too much (darn near everything)
6 - Lake - Athletes are not always basketball players... Bowen does have the kids trust though and that is the hardest thing for coaches to get to start with..
7 - Woodmore - Love the coach but the well looks pretty dry for him in his first season
Overall i feel like the league is much more well rounded this season than the last few... Basketball isnt very good in the SLL right now but from top to bottom it looks to me like any of these teams could beat eachother on any given night... Should be a lot of great games this season! However, it does look like a league that has been a big mans league the last few years has made a very quick switch to a guards league! -
birddog23Elmwood will win the leauge. Waldock x2, Hannah, and Hammer will all be very tough to stop. Dont know much about the rest of the league seeing as Genoa lost their core group of guys. Beaber (sp?) from Gburg will be fun to watch this year along with the super soph's over at Otsego. Is Bowen the head coach now at Lake?
As for Eastwood goes, yes they lost it all pretty much. They graduated 8 seniors including one of the better basketball players to come through Eastwood in sometime. The younger Faykosh is the only returnee from the varsity squad that actually played. Yikes, its weird to say only person returns lol. But as Lotz said I look to see a lot of run and gun from them this year and chucking up the three ball. Both Faykosh's are very good shooters and the younger one, Jacob, does a great job of running the show.
It'll be interesting to see what happens this year for sure! -
royal_kI think Otsego, with the 2 sophomores, will be up at the top. They are 2 very talented players. Very impressive as freshman starting on the varsity last year.
Elmwood will probably start 4 seniors. (The Waldock twins, Jay Hannah, and Kevin Hammer) and a junior, Tyler Rosendale, at the point. Nobody over 6-2. They will really look to run.
Eastwood and Genoa did lose a lot of size, so the league will definately be smaller. -
GCTD64The Faykosh boys are phenomenal players with great attitudes! That whole family is as respectful and classy as it gets! However, I dont see them getting it done this year... Just not enough of a cast and if you live by the three you die by the three... This isnt the pros where they will be able to hit 10 3ptrs a game but on any given night i could see it being the difference against a top league team
-
birddog23I very well think they will make around 10 three pointers a game because they will probably shoot around 30 a game. But I don't see them getting a lot of points in the paint.
-
Swamp FoxI like those Elmwood and Otsego kids. I always have. The Royals have a fairly rich basketball tradition and it sounds like the lineup is set and they are ready to make a serious challenge for the league title. Otsego will battle every night and I really like their coach. Eastwood may not have much back but they will always fight hard and frankly, it's the kind of league where you better be ready every night or you'll be going home with an "L". Genoa is always in the mix and it sounds like the Bears over at Gibsonburg will have something to say about the final standings as well. What a great final year and the great thing is, someone I haven't even mentioned may walk off with the title and make us all look stupid.
-
birddog23It will for sure be interesting to see how the league plays out this year. Does anyone have any upcoming scrimmage dates for their respective schools that theyd like to share?
-
royal_kElmwood scrimages Paulding and Swanton friday at Paulding. 5:30
Tuesday the 16th, they have Toledo Christian and Bettsville at home. 5:00
Saturday the 20th, Maumee at home. 10:00
Wed the 24th, Fostoria away. 10:00
Fri Dec 3rd is the 1st game against North Baltimore at Elmwood. -
Classyposter58Without Bassitt and Wonnell I don't see Genoa doing a darn thing. I'm worried for a 5th place finish with Elmwood, Gibsonburg and Otsego
-
birddog23That would be a 4th place finish classy if elmwood, gburg, and otsego finish ahead of the comets.
-
bwcomet89The SLL as a whole is down, as hard as it is to believe that it could be more down. Coaching will be huge this year, so I see Elmwood and Gibsonburg winning a lot of league games. I could see Genoa sliding to 4th-5th. Lost almost all their size, all their defense and even though Overmeyer is a good guy, he's probably the poorest coach in the league. They have a lot of guards though, and Coach O has always been a guard coach so that's his only hope. I'm picking Elmwood to run through this league though.
-
birddog23How did scrimmages go over the weekend if there was any? I know Eastwood went to Bryan but didnt hear how they did there
-
royal_kHaven't heard how Elmwood did at Paulding friday. But I am going out to watch them tomorrow against Toledo Christian and Bettsville. TC has a very good program, so that should be a good test. And if I remember right, Bettsville has a couple big kids and a guard that can really shoot. (Scrimmaged them last year)
-
birddog23I know TC lost one of their returning starters to transfer at Springfield.
Eastwood is at Bellevue Wednesday and then goes to Owens Saturday morning. Owens will have some good competition there so it will be a good measuring meter to see where the Eagles are. -
Classyposter58Well looks like it's time to start talking basketball and honestly Genoa could very easily finish 5th. Forgot the Eagles in there
-
birddog23Genoa looked like it had a couple of middle school kids playing today out at owens. Who is on the basketball team that plays football? Sutter, Algier, Lopez, Murphy?

Good article about Wonnell playing basketball. It's crazy that he is the second Genoa athlete to ever play D-1 basketball. To be in exclusive company with Ron Hammye is pretty special. -
royal_kGood article....sounds like he will be seeing quite a bit of PT.
I have nothing to report on the Royal's scrimmages, as I didn't make it out to any of them. -
birddog23Eastwood went 2-2-2 at Owens with wins over Old Fort and Stritch, loses against Rossford and Van Buren, and ties with Kalida and Evergreen.
-
bwcomet89The best part of that article is what wasn't mentioned, that when Wonnell asked Overmeyer for film to send to the Toledo coaches, Overmeyer told him it "Was a waste of time." I guess he didn't have that much faith in his own player.
With that being said, how many of the SLL coaches help their athletes get into college for basketball?
