Realizing early on that I won't when many games, I would stress teaching defense and basketball fundamentals and actively seek assistants and coaches that are teachers and motivators. I want emphasis on building the character, discipline and academia of young men first and worrying about wins and losses secondary to that. All positions are up for competition at the beginning of the season and really, throughout the season. Being a senior does not guarantee a starting position or a spot on the team, nor does friend and familial relationships.
nice post.....but one spot really got me second guessing.

That Bolded print...Why would someone who puts Wins and losses secondary, constantly bring up records and how our previous coach never had a losing record....but then when Coach Slaughter leads the team to state, and then has a losing season (because we graduated a one of a kind player) you are jumping all over him because he has a losing season and pointing out that he currently has a losing record as a head coach......

I guess that just doesn't make much sense to me if winning and losing to you personally is secondary to teaching and coaching young men character, discipline, academia etc...

62 u were noi there last night to see mitchell come in and tun it over and shoot everytime. but thats ok sly and the other coaches no nothing about hoops/

The only difference between Mitchell and the rest of the guards is he is not affraid to shoot the ball, other than that....same type of players.

If you read the history of comments (jjhuddle primarily), regarding Coach Short by many Orrville posters, they maintained that he was not living up to the "winning tradition" of Orrville because he didn't get far in the playoffs, despite some of those same posters saying that Orrville might not have advanced as far as they did last year had Orrville not changed divisions.

My comments are in truth, sarcasm directed at them and quite possibly, you. That's why I bring up the records!

I said that he has a losing season currently.

I just wanted an answer, lol just didn't make sense to me.

I do like that coaching philosophy though, did you Google that? :D sarcarsm

And in less than 3 minutes he shot 66%, what did the other guys do?

Don't you think that if he's hitting some shots it would open it up down low so that the "bigs" aren't shooting low-percentage 3 pointers?
Didn't someone say the lack of guards shooting and hitting the shots was a problem?

Is he consistent....sure a kid can make a few shots in a row, but does that mean he should start?

Ask yourself the question, honestly, what have they really brought to the Varsity level in the way of improvement over Ray? Were they showing that much talent in JV?
    NO!

Did he get a real opportunity to prove he couldn't? He played a decent game at home against Lexington when he was given an appreciable amount of time and then in the final 2-3 minutes on the road against Wooster when he finished with 11 points, I believe he was the second in scoring for Orrville. For that he was benched!

how about perez in all this mix,how does him being demoted to j.v. is he now a forgotten piece too the puzzle.
  • OQB
It was just a question...I agree he gets pulled a little early.

And I gave you an answer!

No, I did not Google it!

Explain the benching of Pirman, he is probably the second leading scorer on the team, normally defends other teams leading scorer, probably the most athletic kid on the team besides Turner. Before you say it, no he is not a "basketball player" but then again neither is Winters (at this time). I do like the improvement Winters has shown thought, hopefully next year he will come into his own. As for Mitchell, why not give him a shot, our guard play has been less than adequate. Honestly I don't know who I would start at guard if I were coaching.

That's an understatement, how about "rarely played"?!
  • OQB
I think it has been a lose lose all season with whatever combination of guards we have on the court....all our very inconsistent and turn the ball over but all can show signs of great play. Hard to decide who should get what. Are the sophomores and better than the upperclassmen....no, but are they any worse?

"Probably" the second leading scorer, what is his average and what has that done for the teams record?
"Defending the other teams leading scorer". I like a strong defense, defense is not however, running wrecklessly around the court pushing, shoving and throwing elbows at the defendee! He did it especially to the West Holmes, Lexington, Wooster and Northwestern leading scorers and he didn't stop them! He just got near to fouling out, and in some cases, I believe he did!
Are you attempting to groom Pirman or Winters as a basketball player?

Another part of that coaching strategy is to make the weight room mandatory as much as possible, just like practice!

Myself, I would have given Mitchell a shot at starting if for no other reason to keep everyone on their toes. Play lackadaisical and you might be Bench strong!

"Realizing early on that I won't when many games..."

This is the time where coaching, inspirational and motivational skills are revealed!

Series I can't argue that answer.

did you mean to say, "realizing early on that I won't WIN many games..."

but +1 to the second part of that post.
  • Series62
In all reality, we shouldn't be arguing, it's just discussion. Some guys don't like my opinion because I don't bleed Red Rider. I'm a Red Rider fan, I have 3 sons that played to some degree for this school. It's a good school with great history, but, because of that they seem to play favorites and that isn't right!
