My Evo is in, what Android apps do I need to get right away?

  • justincredible
Best Buy called and my Evo is ready to pick up. Recommend any apps or anything that I need to do right away. I believe I'll be able to upgrade to 2.2 right away so that will be my first order of business.

My favorite is Gmote. It turns your phone into a remote control for the media on your computer. My computer monitor is better than the tv in that room, so I watch my movies through the computer.

Also, I like to follow droid updates on the phandroid app.

Some people will tell you not to use it, but I swear by Advanced Task Killer....it shuts down apps properly to help with battery life.

    Google Maps--- GOAT maps/navigation
Opera Mini---the default browser sucks IMO
Sportstap--Set your favorite teams and receive score notifications like you would a text
Astro--Lets you browse the SD card to find files
Y5 batter saver---Turns wifi on when a known network is in range and off when out of range...saves a bit of battery

You're going to have to play around with it to maximize battery life. I usually get about 8-10 hours of use during the day when I am on it quite a bit.

Also i see the chatter is on twitter now...get the licensed twitter app...Peep sucks.

Also, I was dicking around with an EVO the other day...it is a beast. The only thing I am not a fan of is the 4.3 inch screen....just overkill to me. Other than that, it is the best phone out right now.

    Pandora - Internet Radio
Shazam - If a song is playing and you want to know what it is, open this up, it will listen to the song and tell you what the song is.
    Advanced Task Killer
Handcent - a text messaging app. I like it b/c you can lock people out of your texts. Keep out prying eyes.

Any Fart or Whoopee cushion app !!!

Actually I use Advance Task Manager along with Advanced Task Killer. Seems like even thought I Kill the apps, I'll hit the Task Manager and it kills even more apps that are running in the background.

I'll try to replace all of the apps I currently useon my iPhone with the android version. Most that I use regularly are on both platforms, which is nice.

Pandora was the first one that came to mind.
Others include The Weather Channel, TV Guide, and the Magic 8-Ball.

    Abduction - think Doodle jump
Appbrain App market - Much better interface for browsing the android market.
    Caller id faker. Hilarious.
Google sky map - pretty cool app
LauncherPro - if you want to fully customize the UI, while keeping the HTC sense feel to it.
Google Listen - If you have podcasts you listen to.
    Movies - Obvious
Task Manager - the best app killer I've found to save battery.
Weather Bug -better than the Weather Channel app, imo
WordUp! - Kind of like Boggle. A nice word puzzle game.
Astro File manager - Lets you get into your SD card and manage/rename files.
Opera Mini or Dolphin HD web browser. Dolphin is a little more bloated and packed with features, but it'd probably run very nicely on an EVO.

The ONLY reason for a task/app killer is if an app hangs, and you can do that manually through settings. Most people don't use task killers properly (forget to exclude services that need to run and will always restart themselves) and end-up getting WORSE battery life. I had a task killer or two initially, thought I was pretty good with excluding apps, and after removing it I saw an improvement in battery life.

I have both Astro file explorer and EStrong - cool thing about EStrong is you can connect to your computer wirelessly over wifi to move files back and forth. Very handy as it eliminates the need to mess with the USB cord.

I like the Android Agenda widget for calendars/appointments. Also integrates Astrid tasks.

Email, I recommend either Pure Messenger or Executive Assistant. Both cost money but give you Blackberry like e-mail functionality.

Audio manager widget gives you quick and easy access to all your sound and notification settings.

    Agree with AppBrain.

Karloer clock is a cool little app - it's an alarm that can wake you to a music playlist which fades in.

Those are some of the best, non-obvious apps.
