You liking it? My plan comes up for upgrade on Friday, and I'm leaning toward this phone.

I was looking at the Incredible or Droid X, but the Incredible is cheaper. The guy said basically the only difference is the X has an HDMI out (who cares) and the memory card is bigger (I can get one for like $10-15 on Amazon to fix that)

Well for it being my first smartphone I really like it. Took sometime to get use to everything. My wife really likes how great the pictures turn out using this phone.

If you're a geek and like to flash different ROMs to your phone, you may want to ditch the Droid X idea. Motorola phones have locked bootloaders.

HTC, does not. (to my knowledge)

I generally don't do any of that, but I did see where Motorola has blocked that off.

i'm considering trying to root my inspire 4g and taking off the BS apps that ATT put on there.

    can I root, delete the shit i don't want/need. then re-root it?

I don't need to get too fancy with it, and I'm okay with the settings the way they are, but of the 30 apps on my phone, 18 of them are garbage like the ATT navigation app that i don't even pay for.

What I would do is not DELETE the apps, but Freeze them. After you root your phone, download AntTek App Manager and freeze the apps you dont want. What it essentially does is rename the applications in your phone, so they no longer run/appear in your apps drawer. In the future, if you want to upgrade your ROM or want one of the applications back, you can simply unfreeze it and it'll reappear.

If you need help rooting, let me know and I can do some research to see how to do it on your particular phone.

Currently there are two methods to root the Inspire 4G: here is link to rooting, etc.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353

    1. The Ace Hack Kit(thanks to attn1) simply follow the instructions in the post, as well as in the read me doc: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352

    2. -Bubby's one click GUI(thanks to bubby323). Just like before simply follow the instructions provided: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406

Just got the Thunderbolt yesterday, and want to delete apps that came with the phone like Blockbuster, Peep, etc. I went through the settings but doesn't give me a option to delete them. Any advice on this?

You won't be able to delete the apps, but you can freeze them using the same method I mentioned a few posts ago.

I'm of the assumption that since I don't know what kernels and ROM is its not worth rooting.

For the casual user, rooting your phone isn't necessary. When you "root" your phone, you're basically enabling the "God" account on the device. The way Linux works is that the "root" user is the full administrator of the system. It can edit system files.

It's useful if you want to freeze/unfreeze apps, underclock your CPU for more battery life, etc.

If you browse the Market, you'll run across applications here and there that require root access. The best example of a "casual app" that requires root access are screenshot applications. Example: drocap2. You "shake" the phone and it takes a picture of whatever you're looking at.

Oh, and root is useful if you want to put a different ROM on your phone. Basically, a ROM is the same as the factory restore discs that came with your computer. People break down the android operating system and add/remove/tweak it to their liking.

If you look at the ROMS section of xda-developers.com for your particular phone and you'll see what I'm talking about.
