You only have to open your eyes a little bit to see that the rise in corruption has mirrored the rise of government. The more power to government, the more corruption that exists within it.
So why do we continue to ascribe more and more power to the federal government and away from the people?
First and foremost Ignorance. None of this is new. Our founders specifically set upon a course that provided for limited government. They gave us a constitution based on the laws of Human nature, the natural rights of man, and the tendencies of governments. Periodically, well intentioned leaders remind us of this...Reagan, Eisenhower. For over a century, big government socialism has failed, over and over, and often spectacularly. Yet our universities teach our kids Marx, and skip over Locke. It is shocking how many people see government as a first solution rather than a last resort.
Second, Laziness. We just don't want to be bothered to handle tough choices and things we could do ourselves. Let the government handle our retirement! Let the government handle our healthcare! As I am in the healthcare field, I routinely see people refuse or delay necessary and needed treatment because they( rather than the government or their insurance) have to pay for it... Even people that have the money to easily pay for it, refuse necessary treatment unless insurance or government pays for it....so deeply has that been ingrained into our psyche. Their own body, the most precious thing that they have on this planet....and they'll risk its well being rather than take financial responsibility for it. I blame Hilary Clinton for that...and every politician that proclaims that free healthcare is a right.

I am blaming the entitlement mentality that socialism brings for exacerbating the problem. Part of the reason governments have intervened in the market in every capitalist country in the world is that they accept the world as it is rather than how they want it to be - acceppting that healthcare markets fail because human beings routinely and predictably put off optimal health care choices - even before the government and health insurance managed care organizations existed.

Sure they are better off than a hundred years ago when they were fighting World Wars! Yeah, a defense budget eats up a lot of "butter". So, if these welfare states are surviving ( and many are not) it is because their defense security is being financed and propped up by the American military umbrella. It is just another case of socialism "working" until other people's money runs out.( In this case, the other people being the United States taxpayer) It would be curious how well and long their social budget would last if they had to pay for their defense without the security of the U.S. backing them up. -

Also I find it interesting that Republicans are all for small government yet act entirely different once they are in office. Yes yes, keep believing in the lies you are told about less government is better. I do agree that government isn't always the most efficient run entity or that it doesn't have some over burdensome regulations that hinder the economy, but this idea that we need to reduce the size of the federal government is asinine at best. Government has an extremely important role in society and most people are utterly clueless on what the government actually does. -

Well 1. I don' disagree with you about republicans and their hypocritical stance on smaller government. So, not sure if you are trying to reflect that on me logic, but that's a fail if you are.
2. Since the 70's regardless of who has been in control of our government, regulations have increased EVERY single year. So, your "revert back to 50+ years ago" logic you like to use all the time doesn't even work here.
3. To your bolded part. I believe Government is a necessary evil, but not even close to the extent that it has been increasing in our lives the last 20+ years. The Government should be as minimally invasive as possible, but can still protect property and bodily autonomy. Instead we have created a society (and keep perpetuating) where people cant' seem to comprehend functioning without the Government being involved in everything. This is why you can't make a simple cut to any program/agency/department without anyone crying. The day we have a party and president that will reduce our debt is the day I will happily vote for him/her, regardless if it is the GOP, DNC, or any other party.
Anyway, this thread is about progressives sucking ass. We already have a conservatives/GOP sucks ass thread. If we want to discuss how both sides are a joke start the hypocritical thread. I am sure we all will enjoy it. I am also up for a less government = better debate thread. We seem to always talk about it, but not dedicate a thread to it. -

Exactly. Conservatives would love regulation when it comes to what people do in the bedroom or the bathroom but god forbid we protect our water supply from pollutants.
