Putin is a black belt in martial arts amongst many other things . Putin is a bad ass. He used to be KGB. He has Green Beret type training.
Europe is going to sit on the side for the most part and let good ole America spring for the tab for the protection of eastern Europe. Eventually Russia wants all it's lost territory brought back to the motherland . As of now we can't afford to fight this battle . it's time for Europe to stand up and fight for themselves.

What's he to do NOW?.....Try to figure out a decent response when the 'self defense' troops appear/ "are asked into " in the rest of SE Ukraine.

Russia will have to invade Eastern and Southern Ukraine at some point. Now that Russia is in possession of the Crimean peninsula lets not forget Crimea's civil infrastructure is dependent on mainland Ukraine. Fresh water, Gas, Electricity. There are two land routes into the Crimea both through mainland Ukraine. Connections to mainland Russia are by ferry or ship. Russia would have to spend billions building an infrastructure that is connected and supplied by the Russian mainland. Or they can just send in some those "self defense" troops then roll the tanks. All in the name of protecting the oppressed Russian population. What do you think are the chances that the Ukrainians refuse to supply Crimea and turn off service to those poor Russian souls? Putin is already busing in thugs to stir the pot in the east and south.

And honestly I would not rule out a push all the way over to Moldova where there is a break away Russian speaking region that I think still flies the hammer and sickle. I read I think in a time magazine article that the hand picked pro Russian leader of Crimea was born and grew up in that area of Moldova.

    Vladimir Putin.
After the revolution, the Bolsheviks, for a number of reasons – may God judge them – added large sections of the historical South of Russia to the Republic of Ukraine. This was done with no consideration for the ethnic make-up of the population, and today these areas form the southeast of Ukraine. Then, in 1954, a decision was made to transfer Crimean Region to Ukraine, along with Sevastopol, despite the fact that it was a city of union subordination
Millions of people went to bed in one country and awoke in different ones, overnight becoming ethnic minorities in former Union republics, while the Russian nation became one of the biggest, if not the biggest ethnic group in the world to be divided by borders
What about Russia? It humbly accepted the situation. This country was going through such hard times then that realistically it was incapable of protecting its interests. However, the people could not reconcile themselves to this outrageous historical injustice.
What we proceeded from back then was that good relations with Ukraine matter most for us and they should not fall hostage to deadlock territorial disputes. However, we expected Ukraine to remain our good neighbour, we hoped that Russian citizens and Russian speakers in Ukraine, especially its southeast and Crimea, would live in a friendly, democratic and civilised state that would protect their rights in line with the norms of international law.

However, this is not how the situation developed. Time and time again attempts were made to deprive Russians of their historical memory, even of their language and to subject them to forced assimilation.

Putin's speech is in the context of Crimea (but make no mistake its not just Crimea) and like any good dictator who feigns democracy with rigged elections that produce outrageous numbers in favor of his will it does have quite a few lies in that regard.

This has gone on for centuries in Europe and the history of the world. Hitler made the same arguments. I am all for people wanting to leave or identify with another nation if they so choose. But like Hitler, Putin is facilitating these events by force. Honestly I think that Crimea would likely vote to join Russia but it would probably fall on more of a high 50 low 40 split. It would depend on what the choices were being more autonomy from Ukraine, independence, or union with Russia. But we will never know. It won't be the last time the Russian map gets larger.

That part about the language and history did not go unnoticed. At this point though Russia is not going to attack a NATO member country. Its seeking to for now carve off areas of its former republics that have large Russian populations that have entertained that notion of becoming NATO members themselves. Its really quite smart NATO will not admit a new member that has an open major territorial dispute with Russia. Its too risky for NATO and the Russians know it.

Going against NATO is a bold step, something the Russians and Soviets haven't done, so why would they now?
Also, bigger picture, as long as strategic stability is not offset, which so far is not, as both countries are still doing New START inspections and meetings, it really doesn't matter what Russia does.
I'm of the mindset that, while it is not ideal the current situation, as long as Russia does within their traitional sphere, or does not provoke NATO, it really doesn't matter.

Belly, as someone who dislikes Obama greatly, I still have to say that this sounds nearly like a satirical quote from The Onion.

Those inspections and meetings will continue as long as the Russians need them to. God and the Russians only know whats going on in the nether regions of Siberia. Guys like Putin sign treaties/agreements to buy time to gain ground and strength. Look what Yelstin accomplished. Promising respect for Ukraine's borders in exchange for the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal in the world. Ten years later Ukraine will at the least be carved in half. The West is reacting like it did with Germany pre WWII to avoid sparking war. Lets hope that Putin does not miscalculate like Hitler did with Poland and invade say Estonia believing that the West/NATO does not possess the balls to bring mass bloodshed upon their people to keep their promise to a nation that lies in the traditional sphere of Russia as Poland fell under the traditional sphere of Germany.

Obama just referred to Russia as a "regional power".

Putin responded by referring to Obama as a "celebrity campaigner"

What a dumb comment. Everyone in STRATCOM and that deals with the threat of Russian nukes that could easily be pointed at American cities just did a face palm.

I'm sure our president will have some stern words about this. My guess is "We will not tolerate this" and "This is an outrage". Those responsible will be shaking in their boots.
