Continuing this thread. I'm enjoying an Oban 14 year before a night at the theater (A Christmas Story musical). I understand why you like it so much, otrap.

Drinking Woodford tonight. I also scored a Pappy 15 that I’m saving for Christmas with my father-in-law.
I was at a conference down in Norfolk, VA the last few days. I stopped for dinner on the way down at this place called Park Lane, near Hampton Roads. They had a bottle of Elmer T. Lee and a few other hard to find bourbons. I enjoyed quite a few glasses of the Elmer T Lee. Fine, fine stuff.
Elmer T. Lee is one of my favorites. I have a bottle, but don't get into it very often since it is so hard to find.
I'll have to check that one out, I've never had it before.
How would Elmer compare to Blantons?
I need to buy Christmas gift for someone and appreciate recommendations .......since I am a gin guy
Got an early Christmas present. Macallan 12-Year.
Not sad about it.

That's a nice simple drink. There's not a lot going on with it unless you are patient and really wait for and disect the finish. Reminds me a lot of Glengoyne 12.
I haven't tried the Laphroaig yet from our previous discussion but I think I'm going to dive into some more peaty drinks next. In addition to the Laphroaig 10 I'm going to try and find some Ardberg 10 and/or Highland Park 12...which ever I come across first.

If you've not tried the Talisker 10-Year, I'd give that a go as well. It's pretty smokey.
Got a Laphroig 10 year with dinner tonight. Not bad.

Blantons is better than than Elmer, but they are from the same Buffalo Trace factory, so both are great.
Elmer T Lee is just harder to find now a days.
I've restocked my bourbon this weekend. I picked up a bottle of Four Rose's Single Barrel and Wild Turkey 101. Also, picked up a bottle of Knob Creek Single Barrel for a friend of mine.

To me, it's been the quintessential ballance of peat and bite.

WITH dinner? Ballsy. Did you taste dinner after a few sips of the drink? ;)

If you like smoky, I highly recommend the Lagavulin 16.
I got a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon from my in-laws for Christmas. I'm looking forward to opening that up soon.
I got that as well.
I went to a place in DC yesterday, Chicken + Whiskey, speakeasy place north of Logan Circle on 14th. It has a bar behind a fake freezer door. I had some local DC Whiskey, called Rock Creek. It was very good for being new.
Also, a cool place for people who are ever in DC.
Cracked open the Four Roses last night. It was quite good.
Had some Elijah Craig 12 Year Small Batch Barrel Proof (123 proof). It was quite good and smooth.
Also had some Wellers Special Reserve which is made by Buffalo Trace. Solid, the 12 year supposedly has a similar recipe to Pappy.
Got a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 year single malt scotch from my bro in law. Stuff is potent!

Nice bang for the buck, that one. Won't break the bank, and it's not going to impress Scotch snobs, but frankly, it's a very solid Scotch.
Picked up a bottle of McClelland about a week ago, just out of curiosity what a $17 single would taste like.
Surprisingly, it sucked less than expected.
Laphroaig is down to $41 at my local store...best bang for the buck out there IMO.

Just has a glass of that yesterday at an Irish Pub. Best Scotch I have had to date. MaCallan 12 year single malt.

For $17 I'll have to give it a try if I see it somewhere.
Anyone have a favorite whiskey based cocktail? I love a manhattan or an old fashioned. I've never tried a scotch cocktail, but this list looks pretty good:
I might pick up a bottle of Famous Grous and give a few a try. At the very least I'm sure I'll like a Rob Roy.

I like a good Rob Roy. Love an Old Fashioned (not with Scotch, obviously).

Yeah, thats a good list. I've found you can still do a bourbon cocktail with scotch. Some are decent, some are not, all depends on taste.
In my rotation:
Old Fashioned
Manhatten
Whiskey Sidecar (Whiskey, orange liqueur, and lemon juice)
Whiskey Sour
Mint Julip
Whiskey and pick your favorite pop
Macallan 12 last night. Smooth. Not very complex and way too sweet for me.
