Or the fact that maybe people are realizing now their old job or lower paying jobs were really bad, and now want better wages and benefits?
Think about it. If I previously worked at a fast food place or restaurant that paid under $10 and hour and offered shitty benefits, why would I want to go back to that job?
I think the pandemic has made a lot of people rethink the work they had previous to the pandemic.
There are a number of businesses near where I live that have hiring signs. I ask what they are willing to pay and what are the benefits, and they are low wages and zero benefits. Not a shocker they are having a hard time finding workers.
The reason they can't get people to come to work is because with the added federal unemployment money it doesn't make sense for a person, especially if they don't have a high work ethic, to work 40 hours for say $1000/week ($20/hr) when the current system is giving them $900/week to STAY HOME?
Come on ptown, Occam's Razor and all, the simplest answer is probably correct. People aren't willing to work 40 hours a week for an additional $100 above what the government will give them for free. They would go to work for 40 hours a week to gain about $700/week if the federal additional $600 was dropped.
It's a little more of a complicated "reason" to say "people just finally realized they should get more pay and benefits to work a job that is not necessarily one that requires high levels of skill or experience".
People aren't going back to work because the government is handing people $900/week not to work and regular "decent" jobs pay in that similar range. Why work 40 hours for no significantly higher money?
