Big Red breaking news.

  • ManO'War
A lot of people remember Big Red that had their team play against ours.

Arsinio Hall remembers Big Red from the time he was at Glenville and they came down....he met Dr. Keenan in Hollywood during the taping of his show and brought up the fire breathing horse.

So when will Rally in Death Valley be finalized? I'm not really looking forward to seeing Wheeling CC play Bridgeport (since I will already have seen Bridgeport play in week 1), but the Iggy-Bosco game and the Big Red-M-town games will be great.

Does anyone have any updated information?

Popular restaurant?!?!?! lol You are DEFINITELY not from the area.

Hey, Alphonso. Your username supports a man who was responsible for killing hundreds, was jailed for income tax evasion, and died of syphilis. And you're worried about what goes on in Steubenville? My mother taught me at a young age that it never makes me look better to put somebody else down. Why don't you worry about what goes on in Pittsburgh?

By the way, I'm not putting you down; just your username.
Al Capone was never convicted of killing anyone. It is a fact that 90% of the American people could be convicted of income tax evasion. YOU FAIL!!!

I live in Largo Florida (Tampa Bay area) and In 94' I was living in Bradenton Florida. I watched that yr Bradenton SouthEast, Manatee, Lakeland, Apopka, Plant, Southridge, Bolles, Jefferson, St Thomas Aquinas along with many many others during the season and in the FHSAA Playoffs. And in that yr Bradenton South East was ranked very high nationally I think like 8th or so finished lower in the top 25 though.

Anyway their coach stopped in my center and I had the 94' 'Boardman Vs Big Red game playing (thanks to ManO'War:) He asked what college game was playing and I told him it was high school game in Ohio. We talked more and he could not believe that we were not a larger school. He stayed and watched the entire game. He could not get over the stadium/horse and how many fans were at the game etc.
I asked him how we compared to Florida schools...Right at the top he said. no question.

But the same thing that is said about a big red schedule, I could say about some of the Nations Top 25 Teams regular season opponents.....Let's take Aquinas schedule for example....Unless you know who the Boyd Andersons, Novas, McArthur's, Cardinal Gibbons', South Broward's, Coral Springs', Cypress Bay's and the Upper Arlington's are, then you can't say they are the "TOP" Teams in the nation. Take Highlands, Ky for another example ranked 3rd in the nation in 09'.

I've attended Lakeland, FL games in 05' and 06' and the Red could play with them. 07' Booker T. Washington, FL we could play wit'em. 08' Armwood, FL play wit'em. 09' Miramar, FL as well. These were all top 25 teams in those yrs. and I bet 25 other schools could have beat them as well. It's all popularity and not familiarity.

    You can't be serious!
Big Red is a quality team in D4/D3 in Ohio. But to try and say they are a national power is funny.

The teams you want to compare youself with produce multiple D1 recruits. Even with all your "open enrollment" players you can't compare.

Now try and play the coaching staff card. Do you believe that the national powers have inferior coaching compared to yours?

Get your head out of the clouds!
  • ManO'War
First you're arguing with someone who has actually seen these teams play live multiple times. Second, I think the point he is trying to make is that people who have never seen these teams build them up in their minds as NFLish type high school teams. That's not the case. I've watched Iggy on many occassions, and while they are a well coached team, they don't blow you away as being super athletic or anything. They are solid at most positions, which is what it usually takes to win at the high school level.

I was in Florida for ten years, and what I observed is that while there is a lot of raw talent, the actual programs, save for a couple, are not that great. Community support was lacking, and most games had the intensity of a scrimmage.

As far as D1 recruits, that is mainly based on raw physical skills. How many times have you seen Big Red line up vs teams with multiple D1 recruits and still win the game? If that was the sole factor, then DC Dunbar would be in the top 5 nationally every year.

My only serious dispute above would be Lakeland '05. IMO, that one would not have been pretty. One could make a case for the rest, though.

Bottom line as I said before...every team you mentioned has shown a willingness to travel. Call 'em. ;)

You can't necessarily judge a team by the number of Div. I college players it produces. Warren Harding sends more players to Div. I than just about any other team in Ohio, and yet they have trouble making the playoffs.

Great athletes does not mean a great team.

Sure, they may start out with an advantage, but a fundamentally sound well coached team can beat an all-star team of 'me-first' super athletes.

We were driving down sunset today and saw the opening where the bleachers used to be.It's a scene that has not been seen for some time I'm guessing.Seeing this gave me an idea though. When the new bleachers go up they should make a huge permenant sign reading “WELCOME TO DEATH VALLEY”on back of the bleachers facing the krogers parking lot.It would be awesome.MOW can you put this idea out there?
  • ManO'War
I know a few years ago they wanted to put up in huge letters across the back B I G R E D, but then the whole fixing the hillside/new bleachers thing came up.

What exactly happened, MOW? Did the bleachers collapse or was this a planned removal? What kind of bleachers are going in their place? Are they going to be cement or *shutter* metal?
  • ManO'War
No, they are just getting old and in need of repairs every year. The school has the money to replace all four sides, but they wanted to do the Big Red Endzone this year so that they could see what the finished project will look like before they do the other 3 sides (which doesn't make too much sense to me, but that's their reasoning).

And yea, they are going to be metal.

The home side is supposed to be on tap for next year, then the visitor side, and lastly the visitor endzone. I wish they would knock out all 3 sides next year and get it over with.

Their is a huge pressbox in the works though...3 stories high and running from 20 to 20, so that will be awesome for the staff and media.

Somebody mentioned the new home side, when done, would include handrails down the steps and require removing a seat from the end of each row. If so, how do they decide which ticketholders get bumped out?

If they're replacing everything, there's a chance they won't need to "bump" anyone out!
  • FairwoodKing
If they replace the whole thing, then they might make the seats wider. That would mean bumping out more people. Of course, in a stadium of that size, there should always be good seats available for the season ticket holders.
  • Sykotyk
True. But the aisles are going to have to match up with the entrances at the top of the stands. So, wider aisles or seats means fewer seats per section row.

I don't know fairwood for one although Harding stadium is a bad åΖΖ place to both watch and play hs football it's not the biggest place in the world.I do think they will make it better somehow and the fans will be happy.I don't think anyone will get screwed on their seats.

MOW I heard you were having a bake sell to try and raise money for the WELCOME TO DEATH VALLY sign is this true?

Thanks for the info. Good news about the pressbox. That has been in need of renovation for years and doesn't seem to match the greatness of our stadium. Then again, after traveling around the state, I've come to appreciate the Harding Stadium pressbox, which is better than 99-percent of boxes even in its present, out-dated condition.

Bad news about the metal bleachers. It won't be the same. SMH

When the tearing down of the homeside is done, I would like to get the row of seats that have been reserved for my family since before I was born and keep them as a souvenir. I'm sure that other long-time fans have the same idea, though.
