Can someone give an update on the Bears/WH/Mustangs scrimmage later? One thing to remember on scrimmages. The good teams hide what they have and the bad teams do all they can to show they aren't as bad as they will be during the season.

I am sure Pit will give us a few updates via the new Droid.

Who all is going to Northwestern for that scrimmage tomorrow evening?
  • Mr. 300
I was watching the freshman scrimmage at WH down on the practice field. I walked up a few times to watch the varsity squads go at it, and from what I saw, Waynedale was doing O'k. WH scoreds a few times, but the "D" I was told struggled a wee bit.

I know Waynedale had some sophomores down playing with their freshman, so that doesn't bode well for the feeder program. Tuslaw and Waynedale both ran the spread.

Heard the first few rotations down at West Holmes were pretty even between the 3 teams. Heard the WH line looked big and they ran the ball well. Tuslaw was pretty balanced. Waynedale ran the spread. Heard the best play was a long TD run by a #50 from Waynedale varsity. A few injuries on all teams. Hope nothing serious.

Northwestern / East Knox scrimmage earlier this week was a rough one for the Huskies. Both offense & defense looked rough. The "O" had trouble moving the ball & the "D" gave up numerous plays of 10+ yards.

The Huskies look alot like they did at this time last year...so all is well at Northwestern. Thut will have this team hitting on all cylinders by week 1. (I hope)

we all tend to overthink these scrimmages (me as much as anyone). We usually leave them thinking our team will be better/worse than they actually are. Have to remember coaches are trying different thing/combinations all while trying not to tip their hands too much. WIll not be able to make it down to fairless to watch by bulldogs this morning so any reports would be welcome.

Speaking of trying different things, I saw a lot of different things at last night's scrimmage - Waynedale running the spread (and some hurry-up) for most the night, West Holmes running a lot out of some 3-back sets, and Tuslaw throwing nearly every down. As many have said, first scrimmages mean different things to different teams, so it's always hard to make any judgements, so I'm just going to report what I saw.

Tuslaw's front 7 on defense did a pretty good job as they have for the past 3-4 years. Opposing teams didn't have too much time to pass, and the sweeps were covered. Of any offensive or defensive unit, I'd say Tuslaw's defense was the most impressive. Their offense was surprising, since they passed almost every down. When they did run, they had a really short but very, very quick kid (#85 practice jersey) running the ball. I know they had Miller last year who was smaller and very fast, and I thought he was returning; but this kid looked smaller than I expected for it to be Miller. Maybe it was? Very small, but very quick. Tuslaw's lines weren't as big as the last few years, but they lost a lot of good kids in the last 2-3 years. #14 practice jersey was a pretty good WR targeted all night and made some nice 1-handed catches and not dropping any he should have had. Tuslaw's "O" scored a few TD's, all through the air (were still spreading it out inside the 10 yard line).

Waynedale ran the spread almost the entire night, but they did switch in a lot of different formations to do it. Even though they were out of shotgun (with Mullins snapping), they still had the most balanced offense, as we would expect from the Golden Bears. They have a few kids who can run the ball (#30 did a good job), and their 2nd string quarterback was making some nice moves on the option. Their defense wasn't anything outstanding yet, but they were hitting. All 3 teams were hitting last night, which was fun to see! I think Waynedale will be more successful on the ground this year than through the air, but we know they'll mix a lot of both in to keep opponents guessing.

West Holmes ran a power offense most the night. When they got away from it, they seemed to stall. I think they had a few good passing plays in one possession, but other than that didn't move through the air. Sophomore RB Mackey will be a load in the years to come. He had a nice 40-yard TD run right up the middle breaking tackles and running away from kids. He wore #28 last night, I think. Their defense seemed probably the weakest of the 3, but they weren't that bad. Their offense at times seemed like it found its identity and ran the ball (looks like they know what they should do based on the sets they ran out of), and at times it turned into a Madden game where you have 1 good passing play and try to get more when you should get back to your bread and butter.

All in all, like someone else siad, all 3 teams were pretty even for the most part. I'd put Tuslaw at 1a, Waynedale at 1b, and West Holmes at 2. But give Waynedale some time to get their new/younger kids used to playing at this level, and I think they could be a dynamic team to watch. Tuslaw's defense will be decent, and their offense can move the ball a bit; but if you guard WR #14 and contain RB #85, I didn't see much depth other than that. West Holmes will be fine, too. If they can get their running game going consistently and mix in the pass a bit like Waynedale, I think they could control the tempo against mediocre teams; but going up against teams with a good D-line and/or forced to throw when behind, I could see them having some problems.

Obviously, this is all just my opinion, and it WAS just the 1st scrimmage. But it's football season, so I was just excited to get out there and watch some football! (and comment on it, too, haha!)

Ringz, I will be there tonight, but with my partner getting in a little practice.

All right I will see you there. I will be the guy in the purple tee shirt.

    Good update Pitman
Heard more on the Bears today from a couple Dads.
    QB
#12 is the projected starter and looked great until he got hurt. He is out for at least a few weeks they thought.
#16 came in next and was not very good. Dropped nearly half his snaps and could not throw the ball. Can run the option ok.
#62 came in third and ran up and down the field. Was quick and fast but against probable second team D's

    RB
Top back did not suit up due to injury
#30 ran with some power and did decent
#50 ran a couple times and was the fastest and best back on the field. Not sure why he was not used more? Scored one of Bears only TD's on a 40 yard run.

Loss of QB could be a big problem since the other two do not look like varsity caliber at this time.

ALL I know is Pittman didnt tell me where the shade was until I got there.....it was a scorcher...Bears are small....slow ....and low in numbers ;) Im sure the fellas are gel'ing....there is speed, but the graduation losses the last 2 years are going to be fellt. Zuercher ran the Platoon Off and Def last year looking to get some PT for these younger guys...and it could pay off....over-all, about what i expected...and C. Mullins is just a lil fella(huh pitman) :)

Ahh less than 2 weeks till opening night :)

I know what we got another week of scrimmages. What does everyone think of their teams first game of the season?
  • thePITman
I am sad to announce that Smithville's Alex Bates (who was going to be a key factor at QB and WR, and also a top cover corner for the Smithies) is out 4-6 weeks after tearing almost everything in his elbow. I wish him a speedy recovery, and Smithville the best of luck this season.

there are some good ones aroud the wcl early on. I will speak to Dalton's game with Garaway. This has been a series with a lot of close games in the 8 or 10 years they have been playing it (not sure exactly how many). That being said , the Bulldogs have won nearly all of them. I expect that trend to continue this year, especially if Lint is good to go. How the new LB's step up will go a long way to showing how this season will finish.

Well Rittman's first game against Connotton Valley should be a cake walk......the only player that the rockets had last year transferred to I believe Malvern

Northwestern's first game is against Ashland Crestview. I'm looking at this game to be a hard fought battle with the winner being the team that wants it the most. The Huskies take on St. Thomas Friday night at St. Thomas. I have never really took a lot from any of these Husky Scrimmages. Thut Never likes to show much. This team has 18 seniors with a lot of heart. I think they will be ready come week 1........

You will see a Dalton with a lot of enthusiasm which hasn't been there in a while. Should be a good test for both teams.

    Link to Dalton article.

    OK, Homer. LOL
  • thePITman
Dalton always seems to beat us up in scrimmages. Each of the last 3-4 years they've just ran up and down the field on us, and we couldn't stop it. Hopefully what is supposed to be a good defense of ours this year will be able to slow them down a bit. On the other hand, it'd be nice to get humbled before we face West Holmes' rushing attack next Friday. Either way, it will be a great scrimmage for both teams. It always is!
  • THE4RINGZ
Who all is heading to the chicken bbq before the scrimmage?

I am planning on it, but I also have open house for my daughter's elementary school at the same time. Who schedules an open house firslt of all on a Friday night, and secondly during prime football season? Kind of blows my mind.
  • thePITman
^^ Haha! We will be there for the BBQ right around 5:00-5:15 or so, probably.

dhs - have you heard if Lint is full go now?

Yes CV's three year starting QB did transfer to Malvern this offseason. And I will say this, if Rittman doesn't beat Connotton Valley, pack up your stuff and become a soccer fan. You will have nothing else to see until basketball season. I believe I posted here or somewhere the absolute shambles CV's program is in. It is very, very sad for the players and fans in that district.
