2010 Wayne County Athletic League Football

After a great 09 season what can we look forward to in 2010? Should be another competitive year in the WCAL. Thoughts?
  • WCLfan
Basing everything on returning talent alone, I would say the early favorites are Dalton, Norwayne and Northwestern (in no particular order).

Dalton had some key losses of defense but return Lint, Hackett and Blevins in the backfield. Dawgs should be strong.

Norwayne returns a good core with Wallace (leading passer), Zimmerly (leading rusher) but will need to rebuild their lines.

Northwestern, stat wise, returns the most. McKean at QB, Bejeck at RB, and all 4 linebackers.

Here are some of the top returning players for 2010:

    PASSING:
    QB: Brennan McKean, Northwestern - 84 of 220, 1,002 yards 7 TD's, 8 INT's

    QB: Jonathan Roseler, Smithville - 52 of 127, 748 yards 5 TD's, 7 INT's
    QB: Gavin Hackett, Dalton - 51 of 98, 700 yards 7 TD's 7 INT's
    QB: Brandon Bauman, Rittman - 35 of 86, 605 yards 5TD's, 5 INT's

wcl - i agree with your favorites - dalton, norwayne and northwestern. Dalton returns 8 starters on offense and 7 on D. Norwayne was very tough last year with an extremely young team. Northwestern also was a couple plays away from a better record and was pretty young. Waynedale loses a lot of key contributors, but has good numbers and will be very solid, I just don't think they will be quite as good. Hillsdale loses a bunch, but they have a good program going now. Smithville should be improved as well. I actually think everyone outside of chippewa and rittman has a chance of winning the league. I just think the first three mentioned have the best chance on paper at this early juncture.

With a new coach at Chippewa any thoughts on the chances of improving on the past few seasons? Not saying to the top of the county, but getting closer to .500?
  • THE4RINGZ
Isn't Busson a senior this year?

i think it will be a tough row to hoe for the chipps this year. They did need a fresh start to try and inject some excitment and optimism. Patience will be required there as it will take a couple years to make sure they aren't losing good fball players to some of the close by private schools - something the rest of the county has never had to deal with very much.
  • THE4RINGZ
Yeah Doylestown is right on the edge geographically between Wayne and Summit Counties. Almost seems like they are not part of the league sometimes

I like Dalton or Northwestern but keep your eyes on Smithville and Waynedale.

It should be a very interesting year. The kids seem excited. Coach Wolf comes from a Huge school and has coached kids that are playing in the NFL. He is actually a product of Norwayne and His wife is from Orville so they are thrilled to be coming back home and Coach Wolf is very pumped up about being part of the WCAL again. I don't know what to expect this year alot of very athletic kids that played in the past are planning on playing again. We may have the talent to make some noise but as everyone knows a new system can be difficult to learn so I think there will be some growing pains this year.

    Chippewa, right?

What big school did he come from and what kind of offense does he favor?

Excuse me for sounding ignorant. I am not familiar with him.

I believe Central Catholic in Indiannapolis, they had about 3,500 students in the high school.
  • thedemoralizer7
dont count out rittman, everyone is back that put up the big numbers for them. Last year they were hurt by 3 starters going down in the beginning of the season. Bauman, dotterer, turbeville will lead them this year with bauman and dotterer both healthy and about to begin their 4th varsity season as starters.

    fb167 is correct

I do agree that rittman will be better, but going from worst to challenging for the WCL (if that is what you are implying is an awfully big stretch.

Nice article. Rittman will go 5-5 at best.....

I WOULDN'T RULE OUT HILLSDALE EITHER
  • 1486wd
you are right beverboy - the falcons do lose a great senior class, but the cupboard is far from bare. I don't think they repeat this year, but they will still be in the mix.
  • beverboy1
SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER FUN FILL YEAR
  • dhs22p
So who do we think will make the playoffs from the WCAL?
  • WCLfan
IMO, Dalton has the best odds of making the playoffs. I see them no worse then 8-2 with plenty of points.

Norwayne has a shot if they finish non coference unbeaten. CVCA will give the Bobcats big points, Wellington and WR could both finish .500 or better. Northwestern will have to win thier rivalry games over Crestview and Black River as Mogadore will be a huge hurdle. If these 3 teams can finish 10-0, 9-1 or 8-2 I can see all 3 in.. Outside shot would be Hillsdale and possibly Waynedale.
  • neohfan
Northwestern has Mogadore at home this year and played well against them last year. Mogadore lost 15 seniors last year and has some big holes. Mogadore won't be as good this year but still won't be an easy out. I look for Smithville and Northwestern to play right with Mogadore this year if not both beating them.

i really think that norwayne has some classes that are starting to come of age. Their younger grades have all been strong for quite few years now and they even have a great freshman class. Realistically, I know that does not always translate to varsity success, but I think they will be atop the league starting in 2011.
I think WCL is right on track with his postseason picks - those are the three I expect as well (Dalton, Norwayne, Northwestern). I think Hillsdale will be solid, but their nonleague schedule never gives them any points and I think they will lose 2 or 3 league games and be left on the outside looking in in week 11. Smithville and waynedale are the other two wildcards IMO. It will be interesting to see if the smithies get the ship righted this year (certainly very possible).

DOESN'T MOGADORE HAVE 2 OF THEIR STUD RB COMING BACK
  • thedemoralizer7
Who is the best player coming back in the WCAL for the 2010 season? any thoughts
  • dhs22p
You could go with any of the Dalton's backs. Also throw in Wallace from Norwayne and Moore from Hillsdale.
  • thedemoralizer7
Wallace from Norwayne! thats a joke, i wouldnt put him in the top 5. he cant throw a football if his life depended on it.
